aerique··on Wikipedia was in read-only mode following mass admin account compromise
On the Atari ST we had a boot sector virus that inverted the mouse Y-axis after some random time.

So annoying.

If you liked that and you haven't read it yet, give "Dragon's Egg" by Robert L. Forward a read.
aerique··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
At least SFOS has been a viable daily driver since 2013, so there's that.

And SFOS can also run natively like on the PinePhone.

aerique··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
I can also chip in, fully agree with Aachen.

(and I've also made apps for things I'm missing on SFOS (Pushover client, Bluesky client), so Hi5!)

My eyes want a 19" laptop these days.
aerique··on Linux phones are more important now than ever
That's what I love running Android apps in Sailfish OS. I can just take these screenshots.

Then again, this is also what makes me almost throw my Android phone against the wall when I try to do the same on that phone.

aerique··on Baby Steps into Genetic Programming
The AI Challenges were so cool and I had hoped there would be more of them.

A "humbling experience" is definitely the right choice of words.

I did some minor work on a PoC for the one after Ants. It was multi-player (or: multi-bot) Asteroids but things fizzled out as most of the people organizing moved on to other things.

Well, the blog post is 14 years old.

It's an interesting showcase in how we (or at least I) assumed what the lifecycle of hyperlinks would be. (My assumption was they would perhaps 404 at some point, but not this.)

aerique··on Baby Steps into Genetic Programming
There's some minor issues with the blog post though that don't make it entirely correct Genetic Programming as written by Koza's. I'd have to dive into it again but I think it was either with the way mutations are done or how fitness is evaluated.

Anyway, it should be close enough.

aerique··on Syncthing Android App Discontinued
I use Sailfish OS as my daily driver since 2013.

aerique··on Twelve sentenced for violent home invasion robberies to steal cryptocurrency
Crypto is much easier to move around and, with some effort, convert into harder to follow cryptocurrencies.

Very few people will be their own bank.

aerique··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
Void Linux and now Guix have been a godsend.
aerique··on Run0, a systemd based alternative to sudo, announced
Well, it has "NFT" in the name so it must be good!

And explains so much!
aerique··on Alexei Navalny has died
I never understood why he went back to Russia.
aerique··on Alexei Navalny has died
Yes, as long as said autocrats spent billions to undermine it ;-)
aerique··on Google has removed Conversations_im from the Play Store
I would even go so far (as I recently said on Mastodon) that nowadays using Aurora over the Google Play Store is safer since it doesn't display ads for other apps just above the search results for the app one is looking for. If one isn't paying attention or running on autopilot (it happens) one might click on the ad and install some malware.
aerique··on Relativistic Spaceship
Not to mention the comic is pretty good as well!
aerique··on Relativistic Spaceship
Yes, but that's intergalactic space not interstellar space. We've not even begun exploring the latter :-)
aerique··on Why Emacs Keys Are Painful
Not only does the superior ESDF have tactile feedback (because of the nub on the F key) but you also get an extra column of keys (QAZ) on the left!
aerique··on No morphological differences between living and non-living systems are yet known
I'm going to react to the OP through your post.

> The interview Dawkins had with the Indian metaphysician (I forgot the name) made me realize how blinded Dawkins is by his material-reductionist belief system. Dawkins appeared to have no idea what the man was talking about because his belief system could not compute the meaning of what the man was trying to explain to him.

I did not see that at all on the above fragment, maybe at the end a little. It was mostly two men having an interesting conversation albeit at different metaphysical levels and, especially Dawkins, trying to find a common ground.

The video is called "Satish Kumar schools Richard Dawkins" which is ridiculous and leading.

Seems like a waste of time to spend decades of study on yet another D&D setting.
aerique··on The Diorama Engine
I wonder how well the crank works for left handed people.
aerique··on Pixel 8 Pro
I hold no love for Apple but the phone I used the longest was my iPhone 3GS. I think 5 years or so but only because it was jailbroken. (Thanks saurik!) Otherwise it would have been half as useful (or secure since I got fixes to exploits faster than Apple made then).

The initial SailfishOS phone from Jolla was supported for 7+ years and was also a really nice experience.

aerique··on Linux gives up on 6-year LTS kernels, says they’re too much work
And if they don't, they'll run fine on Wine.

aerique··on Hyprland Is a Toxic Community
I might give them a chance again one of these days ;-)

Do you game on Wayland? Steam, Lutris?

aerique··on Hyprland Is a Toxic Community
Initially ATI was so shit on Linux that I'm still not buying them.

Nvidia 4 Lyfe!!1!

aerique··on Hyprland Is a Toxic Community
I think the userbase of Fidonet was slightly different of that of the internet as it is today.
