It probably depends on the country you're in.

Not because destruction of property has a harsher punishment, but because in many car dependent countries, such as the United States, killing a person with your car has become so normalized and accepted as inevitable that there's very little investigation of it and punishment for it.

If you want to get away with murder, buy a car.

Interesting! I've only gotten that low a handful of times. Definitely a bigger battery would be good if you're going that low on a regular basis.
aeharding··on Show HN: Long Range E-Bike
Makes sense for seasonal and recreational riders. We both ride year round though almost daily for transportation.

As for discharging below 15%, Bosch's firmware is pretty smart about this. It keeps a reserve that's used for powering lights for a few hours after the assist cuts off.

> From what I can tell they use a cargo trailer for gear as well as extra batteries.

This is the main reason if you might ever buy multiple ebikes in your household, buy a drivetrain brand that has generic, swappable batteries that can work on all your ebikes. Buying batteries is expensive (~$1,000 for Bosch).

For example, some ebikes don't have swappable batteries (either they're integrated or are a no-name brand).

The Bosch Powerpack, on the other hand, is ubiquitous and swappable. If I'm going on a long trip, I steal the battery from my other ebike and bring it along (I have a Surly Big Easy cargo bike and a Trek Verve+ 2. My SO also has a Verve+ 2).

Another benefit on buying ebikes with the same powertrain manufacturer is the battery lock can be keyed alike. It simplifies a lot.

(Oh, one last thing! If you go with Bosch, you can get the battery locks keyed alike to Abus U locks.)

aeharding··on Reflections on E-Bikes
A good U lock for quick stops, and storing in a secure area overnight and at work does a lot to prevent most theft.

Additionally, renters/homeowners insurance. Just make sure it covers ebikes (some do not, like Travelers). Policies usually cover theft away from home.

Foldable bikes to bring in your home are also a solution if you do not have a safe place to secure your bike overnight.

Pickup trucks are no longer used for their original intended purpose. The vast majority of new trucks are simply masculine posturing driving an arms race that's literally killing people.

aeharding··on Tell HN: Tesla rear-ended me on autopilot, no one will investigate
> Anyone who allows the “Tesla autopilot” would think twice if they actually knew the quality of code that they are betting their lives on. It’s a dumpster fire.

Worse yet, other drivers, and especially vulnerable pedestrians and bicyclists, have no option to opt-out of Autopilot being tested on them, with potentially fatal results

Car crashes are taken very seriously in The Netherlands. It's refreshing to hear investigation into systemic problems vs personal responsibility regarding crashes, common in many other countries (see link).

aeharding··on AT&T’s Abandoned Microwave Tower Network (2017)
Many of these towers are also used for other equipment as well, and not abandoned.

It's also worth mentioning that big equipment like this isn't designed to be removed from towers, and not only would be expensive to remove, but extremely dangerous. It's a lot safer and cheaper to just leave it there, and mount additional equipment (cellular equipment, etc) elsewhere on the tower.

aeharding··on Show HN: Video2WebP – convert videos to animated WebP in the browser
Pre-restriction would have to disallow running javascript in that case. Otherwise an app could save data to localstorage, refresh the page programmatically (or wait for the user), and then transmit.
aeharding··on Show HN: Video2WebP – convert videos to animated WebP in the browser
Even just basic hyperlinking would have to be heavily restricted.

For example...

1. Cross origin hyperlinks would have to be completely disabled 2. Same-origin URLs would need all url information (query params, path, etc) to remain completely client-side. The only thing transmitted to the server would be the base domain.

It's interesting to think about, at least.

It would be cool if there were a special browser badge for a website that ensured uploaded content couldn't be transmitted to the server.

Something in the spirit of `Content-Security-Policy: connect-src 'none';` (not sure if that covers all edge cases though, I'm not super familiar with CSP)

aeharding··on Windy.com
Windy does allow switching between different models, which can be helpful to roughly gauge probability. Definitely not perfect though. And some of the models are consistently inaccurate for specific locations in certain conditions in my experience.
aeharding··on Windy.com
windy.com is great for forecasts, but you have to be careful of the model used for certain sports. (For example, the NAM model can be more accurate for low wind gusts.)

In my spare time over the last couple weeks I've been building a PWA for paramotor pilots to better visualize winds aloft: https://ppg.report.

Wind modeling - especially for aviation - is really an interesting subject. The main API I use at ppg.report is https://rucsoundings.noaa.gov/, lots fun to learn about (CIN, CAPE, the historical "soundings" manually reported from aircraft and balloons, versus the modern ones automatically pulling data from commercial flights.)
