adamm255··on Piracy in the UK: the failed war on illegal content
The subject to change bit is what’s getting me.

After paying probably over £1400 for Netflix in 11 years, you’re rewarded with the films you want leaving, having half of a box set starting half way through. That said, in purchasing media, you’d only get 1 film a month, maybe 2, for the cost of a Netflix sub…

I’ve only seen one album get removed from Spotify since I started using it, so the landscape there is a bit more universal. You want music, it’s on Apple, Spotify, etc.

You want a movie… well. Might be on Netflix, or moved to Disney+. Oh yay, it’s on Prime Video, but on no, it’s for bloody rent.

This is why piracy will continue. If we had a Spotify of Movies, which is what Netflix was, people would pay.

I’ve seen a lot of folks on other forums say that a lot of their classic favourites aren’t on any service (people wanting to watch over the holidays), so resorted to the DVD.

Yeah I've not forgotten yet, the warnings were pretty impressive. Key is to have a few replacements on hand so you dont have to remember to buy them.
adamm255··on The First Virtual Meeting Was in 1916
I love this. When I give presentations this is exactly the kind of opening gambit I look for!

I wonder, what took place in the last few years that in 100 years time will be defined as “pedestrian”.

adamm255··on Starship's Sixth Flight Test
Can someone give me sources for how to debunk this? https://youtu.be/75a49S4RTRU?si=dcGFgcIWNz3nDwxw

For me, it’s compelling but I’m no expert. Anyone got any background that can prove this guy is wrong?

adamm255··on Starship's Sixth Flight Test
I’m with you. As landing the thing means nothing if you can’t get payloads to the destination. To get this thing to the moon would need like 20 refuelling flights to meet it on the way.
adamm255··on Starship's Sixth Flight Test
NASA Landed on the moon in the 60s with an abacus. SpaceX can’t get out of low Earth orbit.
adamm255··on OpenObserve: Observability platform for logs, metrics, traces, analytics
If your platforms enterprise offering includes having SSO as a value driver to upgrade, you've defined your products value proposition wrong.

Ahh you want to make it easier to enable this in your org, in order to get better adoption and ensure the data in our app is more secure, yeah you're going to need to pay us for that.

adamm255··on OpenObserve: Observability platform for logs, metrics, traces, analytics
| The way we think of it is, are you a large enterprise that is already spending a lot of money on security and SSO solutions like Okta? If yes, you should be able to pay us as well for the same level of security.

| Vendors need to recoup costs

| Industry standards: The SSO tax has become an industry standard

Well in that case fine /s

1 - is OpenObserve providing SSO security for ALL your applications, no. Is it doing SCIM, Identity Governance, provisioning, no... its like saying you pay for a sandwich, why dont you pay for the door you used to come into the shop as well. Door tax.

I bet they don't charge you to recoup costs on implementing a JS library? Why are they 'recouping costs' on adding support for OIDC/SAML standards. Build your solution to support SAML/SCIM and OAuth, allow anyone to consume it.

Why?

Adoption and security. Anyone who's a Google Workspace or Microsoft shop has an IDP (albeit basic but OK). Most orgs see the IDP capability there as free. They are then seeing the ability to leverage it as a paid offering in the SaaS apps they buy. So on the one hand, the Identity Provider is free, but the SSO endpoint on the app is paid? Wild.

Also, this is wild:

| For our cloud service we provide SSO in our free tier for following providers with plan to support more in future: Google,GitHub,GitLab,Microsoft

This is great, well done.

| SAML and OIDC are available in our enterprise tier.

WTF? The built out integrations that you had to make UI elements for, offer free (that vendor recoup argument died here). The ones that are generic, are paid for. Ahhh thats right, the generic ones are the ones that let you use Okta, Ping, OneLogin, Keycloak etc etc. Got it, the "valuable" ones.

adamm255··on A Post-Google World?
So many people have never known any different. Gmail launched in 2004. Google Docs in 2006.

So anyone who’s 18 today has never known a world without it.

People don’t know what the save icon is in reality.

Paying for things is interesting as media streaming is frequently valued by paying for it, collaboration and things like Google Maps not so much.

I remember using a Palm Pilot with Tom Tom, and an old maps pack that didn’t have half the new main roads included in the UK! I’d honestly pay for Google Maps for the value I get from it.

adamm255··on Blitzortung – real time lightning strikes around the world
I use this to make sure no Lightning is in the area when playing Golf. Had a couple of times where you hear a rumble, and see the lightning strikes are many, many miles away in the app, going away from you. So you can keep a close eye on it.

adamm255··on Elsevier embeds a hash in the PDF metadata that is unique for each download (2022)
Elsevier is a Dutch company, owned by a British company, so I don't think they'd have any issues.
adamm255··on Why are so many people being hit with £5 fines for 'counterfeit' stamps?
Also the legislation splitting the Post Office from Royal Mail and privatising it happening in 2011/12 just looks even more shady in light of all the Post Office stuff.
adamm255··on Why are so many people being hit with £5 fines for 'counterfeit' stamps?
Well… that’s convenient. The more you know. Isn’t privatisation great!
adamm255··on Why are so many people being hit with £5 fines for 'counterfeit' stamps?
The issue is, the recipient is paying the fine.

I send you a letter with a fake stamp, you pay.

The £5 is an inconvenience, something you’d pay while tutting “what is the world coming to”.

The sender is none the wiser.

7.3bn letters delivered in 22-23 (https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0032/272795/...)

If 0.01% of that are tagged as counterfeit, that’s £3,650,000 in fines.

adamm255··on Why are so many people being hit with £5 fines for 'counterfeit' stamps?
Royal Mail needs to be slapped with a massive Freedom of Information request. We need to see how many fines have been paid.

We had one of these a year and a half ago, similar story. Seemed BS back then, so this could be a big problem.

adamm255··on Both pilots of an A320 fell asleep in the cockpit for 28 minutes
Well rested now! Sounds like they may have needed extra time on the ground.

Sounds like ATC and a nearby plane was trying to get hold of them while they were napping. Wonder how this would have been handled in another part of the world. Unresponsive aircraft for 28 mins…

adamm255··on Mark Zuckerberg explains why so many tech companies are doing layoffs
This is pretty much it from what I see. Stripping back bit of the over growth from 2020-22, leave a bit more cash in the business.
adamm255··on Considerations for a long-running Raspberry Pi

Only buy Sandisk I guess!

When numbers are being presented being clear never hurts. Critical thinking isn’t a key skill a lot of the population has.

I’d assume this was per hour or possibly per shift. If they did a 4-5 hour shift in an evening etc. Best never to make assumptions in these cases though…

adamm255··on Real vs. fake AirPods with industrial CT
I got some AirPods Pro 2 knock offs from Temu for £16.

Paired exactly like AirPods, was super shocked. Work great with an Apple TV. They don’t have multi connect though. But are actually more comfortable than the real deal. I find the originals hurt after about 45 mins.

adamm255··on Portugal. The Man – Official Website Is a Google Sheets Document
Yep. When was the last time you went to a bands actual website to find info? Spotify has tour dates. You’d follow them on Instagram, they share music and dates, links to merch stores there. The website itself means pretty much nothing these days so you can take some creative angles. So many smaller bands I’ve worked with who are growing don’t have one.

adamm255··on Apple reports third quarter results
My M1 2020 is great for battery life, can’t imagine what these are like!

Those MDM functions have been available in other MDM platforms for ages. Microsoft has been consistently bad at Mac management, I think mostly it’s they don’t care.

adamm255··on Should you standardise tools in your company? Case of Miro vs. MS Whiteboard
Does efficient operation of the dev team not directly impact revenue? If you can’t release effectively, causing delays, the CTO will notice when the CFO gets pissed!
adamm255··on Should you standardise tools in your company? Case of Miro vs. MS Whiteboard
“ Employee experience and productivity should be equally important in these discussions as cost and security. And if you are making a decision about available tools on behalf of others, you need to spend time to understand the needs of the people you are deciding on behalf of, if you want to make a good decision.”

A - F*in - Men.

We recently dropped Miro for LucidSpark as we already had LucidChart. It’s so much worse, I hate using it. But on paper it does the same stuff, just implemented poorly. Example being, no anti aliasing on drawn lines. Wtf?!

Experience is king. Getting people to understand that when the mandate is save as much money as possible is the challenge.
