activitypea··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
I didn't stretch my imagination at all, that's why I asked :)
activitypea··on I was banned from Claude for scaffolding a Claude.md file?
What were X, Y and Z? This feels like "missing missing reasons"
activitypea··on Malleable Software
To be reductive about the example of a malleable task tracker (e.g. Notion), if the LLM correctly interprets the user's prompt, there's about 20-30 useful buttons in the interface, and there's a sequence of those buttons that achieves the user's desired outcome. It's open-ended in terms of what you make, but the set of available actions is fairly tight, and the problem is finding a sequence of those actions.
activitypea··on Claude for Chrome
What do you think incentivized the mass production this "slop"? Why do you think LLMs will end the incentives to continue creating it?
activitypea··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> Well, can you think of any reason why those young women didn't want to consider and understand the "opposing view"?

consider and understand =/= agree and support. Regardless of the Harris' or Dems' views, you win elections by getting votes. If we assume everyone who voted for Trump is a sexist asshole, then Harris was running for president in a country where half the electorate are sexist assholes. If you're not gonna extend empathy and try to build bridges with them, then there's no point in running.

activitypea··on Hofstadter on Lisp (1983)
I remember reading GEB and being shocked that he never mentions Lisp. He _does_ wade into CompSci topics, but it's something half-hearted about how compilers are programs that read and generate programs. This really should've been integrated into a revised edition of the book.
activitypea··on Microsoft TypeSpec
The syntax leaves a bad first impression. I'm getting flashbacks to Java EE/JAX-RS days.
activitypea··on Huawei unveils its own programming language the "Cangjie"
Is there any modern hardware that doesn't have privacy issues?
activitypea··on OpenAI appoints Retired U.S. Army General Paul M. Nakasone to Board
Shoutouts to Metal Gear Solid 2, not much else left to say here.
activitypea··on Sora: Creating video from text
yaaaaawn
activitypea··on Goodbye Auth0
> I was still caught a bit off guard. What about that high-priority project I was helping to lead? What about the training I was scheduled to deliver? What about the offsite next month?

This is the part that always confuses me. I understand why they treat employees as disposable, but it's like they don't care about continuation of business either.

I feel like everytime I've quit a job, I cared more about my succession plan than my employer just because I have professional standards I set for myself. It makes no sense to me.

activitypea··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Almost everyone in the United States, unfortunately.
activitypea··on Sam Altman's Manifest Destiny (2016)
Unfortunately for Sam Altman, an LLM will never produce anything half as funny as a bunch of rich VC guys calling a "politics expert" to tell them who to vote for. The human spirit prevails.
activitypea··on Five years after it took on Steam, Epic Games Store is yet to make a profit
Valve is a private company, and therefore much less susceptible to enshittification, at least in theory. That's bound to come crashing down when GabeN retires, though.
activitypea··on Five years after it took on Steam, Epic Games Store is yet to make a profit
Whenever I open the Epic Store, I'm in disbelief that the company behind Unreal Engine is okay with having such a sluggish piece of software.

It has a fraction of a fraction of Steam's features, and yet feels 10x bloated. The visual response to clicking anything in the interface takes what feels like hundreds of milliseconds. It feels worse than any Electron app I've ever used, and I can't imagine why. I know that's not a main reason of why it's floundering, but I also wonder if it's a bigger turnoff for the average PC player than Epic's willing to admit.

activitypea··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
I listen to this a few times year, cheers me up everytime
activitypea··on The death of a public intellectual
Might be worth taking a step back and considering how people like Peterson and Weinstein become public intellectuals in the first place.
activitypea··on Microsoft consumes Activision; and a plea
Hey, if anyone's gonna do it, my bet is on the company that revived Battletoads ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
activitypea··on John Riccitiello steps down as CEO of Unity
Regardless of that product, how long was he making bad decisions before he was replaced? If it's less than two years, are you hiring? :)
activitypea··on John Riccitiello steps down as CEO of Unity
If by "normal" you mean "reasonable", then you're right. If you mean "common", then try working at a large publicly-traded company for a few years. I agree that this stance doesn't stand up "to the slightest amount of thought", but yours doesn't measure up to the reality in the field. The reason people are saying something that makes no sense is probably because it's actually happening a lot.
activitypea··on Nue.js: Rethinking Reactivity
> ES6 classes make your code look amazingly compact and clean. You can add variables, methods, getters, setters, and async methods with the cute and short syntax.

Huh, I didn't know that. I still don't know that :)

activitypea··on Bitwarden: Free, open-source password manager
I try to use open-source wherever I can, but Bitwarden's UX just can't compete with 1Password or even LastPass. The Firefox extension in particular is pretty wonky.
activitypea··on The age of the grift shift
A good companion piece to this is Patrick H Willems' youtube essay "Everything Is Content Now". That section of the blog post brings up points in such a similar manner to the video that I'm surprised it doesn't cite it.
activitypea··on Permazen: a different persistence layer for Java
"We want your code to look like Java, not learn a new query language" combined with "we will support any persistence layer under the sun" is going to be a recipe for disaster.
activitypea··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
You folks just fixed my iPhone 12! It was my first iPhone, and the lightning port "broke" after two months. In the years since then, I just charged wirelessly and made sure I always have a Qi pad available (battery life on the 12 series is not great). I just took a plastic twist tie, the kind you use for PC cables, and aggressively scraped the port's insides, especially the back/bottom since there's no contacts there. Lo and behold, I fished out a lapdog's worth of lint and the phone immediately started charging again.
activitypea··on Apple should re-release Safari for Windows
If iTunes = Apple Music, then I wish more people talked about this. The UX is so-so on iPhones, and terrible on Mac, and probably irredeemable on Windows. Insane that such a cornerstone of Apple's services offerring is so bad.
activitypea··on Apple should re-release Safari for Windows
Then you'll be glad to hear Apple Music is back on Windows, and almost as terrible!
activitypea··on Apple should re-release Safari for Windows
Same. Also, even without the ChromeTM ExclusiveTM Enchancements, I could swear my camera looks better in Chrome than Safari, when if anything it should be other way around.
activitypea··on Apple should re-release Safari for Windows
I don't think slowing down the (Google-propelled) web standards commitees is the worst thing in the world. The endless rolling release stifles browser competition. I wish we could treat the web as a protocol and say "here, this is all it does and all it will do for the next N years, make the most of it".
activitypea··on Why SaaS prices are still going up when companies are spending less
Why? What do you mean by "the market can afford"?
