acranox··on AI is breaking two vulnerability cultures
Debian has updated kernel packages out for the stable release. https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2026-43284

I kind of get your point, but they responded pretty quickly here.

acranox··on Why Zip drives dominated the 90s, then vanished almost overnight
Most of us were using Zip drives to backup our files and then put the disks on shelf. There was no cloud backup, and 100MB was often enough for all your personal files.

acranox··on Photos: New Phoenix Microcenter is a 'tech-heaven' for geeks
For a lot of items I’ve looked into, Newegg and Microcenter had comparable prices. Several small items were cheaper at microcenter, presumably because Newegg marked up the prices for low cost items to cover the free shipping.
acranox··on Mini NASes marry NVMe to Intel's efficient chip
Don’t forget about power. If you’re trying to build a low power NAS, those hdds idle around 5w each, while the ssd is closer to 5mw. Once you’ve got a few disks, the HDDs can account for half the power or more. The cost penalty for 2TB or 4TB ssds is still big, but not as bad as at the 8TB level.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/06/15/business/subaru-buyer...

“ Subaru and another automaker, Kia, have been especially aggressive in resisting the law. While other companies are counting on a long-running federal lawsuit to overturn the statute, Kia and Subaru opted to shut off the features in their vehicles that are covered by the law.”

acranox··on Server BMCs can need to be rebooted every so often
Yep. I think you may be right, it’s EOL and probably doesn’t have any more updates available. I have a VM for when I need old Java, but I was going to need an older VM to run Flash, and that just wasn’t how I wanted to spend my time. :D
acranox··on Server BMCs can need to be rebooted every so often
Even worse was one of mine last year that needed Flash. Apparently we neglected to update it. I can handle ancient Java, but trying to get Flash setup was going to be futile, so I just went to the data center.

acranox··on The various scripts I use to back up my home computers using SSH and rsync
Sparkleshare does something kind of similar. It uses git as the backend automatically sync directories on a few computers. https://www.sparkleshare.org/
acranox··on Greg Bear has died
I was not a reader as a kid. I just didn’t ever read books. But around age 13, I had to read a book for school. I picked up Eon at the library, and I read it, and actually wanted to read the whole thing.

After that I got my hands on every book he had written. Moving Mars is possibly the only book I ever read twice.

Later in life reading sci-fi is no longer an interest of mine, however his books were transformative for me.

acranox··on Ask HN: Given two repos of code, what criteria would you use to grade quality?
Comments and commit messages.
acranox··on Ask HN: How do you manage AWS root MFA in a remote work environment?
Just the people that need to, usually the security or operations team that handles creating or deleting accounts, or setting up billing stuff, or creating the initial roles or users that will be needed. All the other responses just say, “don’t use the root account”. That’s true, but there are some things that need the root account, and in a midsized company that shouldn’t be controlled by one person, but usually a small team. I don’t use the root account for anything outside of what it’s explicitly needed for, but I do need access to it for those times, and the rest of my team need that access too. And we have audit trails that let us know whenever someone uses the root account. Tada.
acranox··on Ask HN: How do you manage AWS root MFA in a remote work environment?
You can use the TOTP 6 digit code method, but instead of just scanning the QR code with your phone, you save the “serial” in your password manager and then all your employees can add that serial to the app on their device. Did that make sense? That’s what I do.

acranox··on Shocker. In Cars, Physical Buttons Are Easier Than Touchscreens
IIRC there was a brief period of time in the US where manufacturers could omit putting airbags in cars if they used an automatic seat belt instead. So a couple manufacturers did this to keep their costs down, but eventually airbags were required in all cars and the automatic seat belts went away.
acranox··on Ask HN: How about a modern phone that actually lasts?
This is kind of funny to me. I’m on an iPhone 8 from October 2017, so it’s just a hair shy of 5 years. I haven’t had a case or screen protector on it for at least the last 4 years. It still runs the latest iOS version. As someone who is concerned about waste, I just didn’t buy a new phone every 2 years, and it’s working out okay for me.
acranox··on Ask HN: What tool would you buy to make your life easier?
If you’re on an Apple product, Strongbox might fit your requirements. https://strongboxsafe.com/

acranox··on Forgetting a Child in a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime? (2009)
They already do that. There are weight and position sensors in the passenger seat that will disable the airbag if it detects an object under certain weight and height parameters. The airbag won’t go off if the seat is empty either. If you want a simple example, put a 40lb box of paper or books in the passenger seat and buckle the seat belt. You’ll see that the light on the dash will indicate the passenger airbag is off. I could describe how the system works in more detail, but if your genuinely interested, Im sure there are some good resources on the internet that explain it better than I would.

acranox··on Ask HN: Where do you save interesting links?

Simple, enough features to sort and search and works on multiple devices.

acranox··on Python 2.7 removed from macOS Monterey 12.3 beta
I think CentOS 7 still does.
acranox··on Roblox October Outage Postmortem
The problem is that you don’t know how long the outage will be when it starts. I once saw a large outage start, everyone jumped on to troubleshoot, thinking it would be an hour. 8 hours later it’s still an outage, and everyone is still on and burned out. Management should have told half the people who jumped on at the start to go away and be prepared for a phone call in 8 hours to provide relief.
acranox··on Why Carmakers Can’t Transition to Newer Chips
Another factor I haven't seen mentioned in the responses yet is safety to human bodies. You (or your kid) can stick a wet finger in a 12V DC charger socket in your car and not get an electric shock, including any of the exposed contacts under the hood, including the battery terminals. But once you're up to 40-60V, the risk of electric shock to humans is actually something that needs to be factored in.
