acherion··on DPReview is being shut down by Amazon today
I'm not sure why digitalcameraworld.com has published this news. If you go to the DPreview home page, there is an article – https://www.dpreview.com/news/0507902613/dpreview-closure-an... – that the site will stay in archive mode (ie. read only mode).

I've noticed, as an amateur photographer and a subscriber to a photography magazine masthead that Future Publishing produces (who are also the owners of digitalcameraworld.com) that the editors and storywriters there are really behind the 8-ball when it comes to timings of their "news" articles. Many of the things that they write are simply out of date by the time it's published on the site. This is just a classic example of that.

acherion··on Royal Mail wins worst April Fools' joke 2023
Personally I think April Fools jokes on the internet have been getting out of hand for years now. Every man and his dog is putting out more and more ridiculous and inane “jokes”, each one raising the bar on its ridiculousness, trying to out-do the previous year.

I’m all for the occasional innocent joke here and there, but it’s come to the point for me to basically avoid any news sites and press release on the 1st and 2nd of April (I’m in Australia, so it takes a while for the US to catch up wrt time zones) because I know it’s just going to be some lame-ass attempt at humour. It’s 48 hours of me rolling my eyes, counting down the hours until people get this stupid thing out of their system.

I checked my Connected Apps list and can still see Tweetbot there, but it said I approved those permissions back in 2011, is ”Tweetbot for iOS” the same as the current Tweetbot available in the App Store?
acherion··on Photography is not just about the camera
Fair enough. Sorry if I sounded pushy in my initial comment.
acherion··on Photography is not just about the camera
I read this comment and all I thought was "that's a real shame" that you stopped taking photos just because of the end result. You said yourself, that you liked the process. Surely in this case, the journey is the reward, not the destination? It doesn't matter if you don't look at the photos anymore, the time you're spending doing the aspects of the hobby that you enjoy more, surely that is enough to satiate the appetite?

Even if you just stop at developing the film, and then storing it in a folder / booklet that has the 35mm film sleeves inside them (yes, you can still get those), you can do like 80% of the "fun" part of your photographic journey, and developed film in a folder will only take up the space of a decent sized book on your bookshelf.

For what it's worth, I started with DSLR photography and am now (as of late last year) getting into film photography and really am enjoying it. I don't develop my own film, I send it off to a lab, but I still get a thrill out of the whole process, even if I'm not involved in some parts of it.

acherion··on The Amiga Story: Conceived at Atari, Born at Commodore (2016)
Commodore took radio shielding rather seriously back then. The wedge Amigas (A500, A600 and A1200) also had excessive metal shielding everywhere. A lot of Amiga owners nowadays just dispose of that as it always gets in the way when you have to fix the next thing that breaks in these machines.

> Still have the Amiga Hardware Reference Manual in my bookshelf. Can't throw it out now?

If you do decide to ever dispose of the book, please don’t throw it away. Sell it so that this knowledge can be passed down to someone who wants to learn. Reprints of these kinds of books aren’t being made anymore, and the only other knowledge source would be (rather old) programmers from the time, who aren’t around forever.

acherion··on Show HN: Mabel – a fancy BitTorrent client for the terminal
Yes that's a fair call. I don't really have an opinion in the matter as I am not interested in using this tool, but your question is a fair one.
acherion··on Show HN: Mabel – a fancy BitTorrent client for the terminal
It looks like there's a few glyphs being used in this application (things like folder icons, etc) that normal fonts aren't going to provide.
acherion··on DALL-E Mini – Generate images from a text prompt
It may error out heaps of times, but requests that do make it through actually seem to come back with images that have considered more than just one or two words from the request.

This one tends to come back with blobby images that don't seem to take in at least half the words in the query (and yes, I'm only using 3-4 words, just like the example).

Out of the handful of DALL-E clones I've seen so far, this is by far the worst performing wrt results returned I've come across.

acherion··on Ask HN: Examples of good technical writing?
The PHP documentation is excellent. I wish other PHP projects / frameworks like Laravel had clear, concise, down to earth documentation like PHP.net's, and doesn't require me to have a degree in computer science to understand the terminology.

I took a look around the site outside of the comics, and saw that there were a list of social media sites to share the content, with the Reddit entry containing a link to the author's reddit account. Curious to see what the latest updates were, I clicked on the link but saw that it was suspended – does anyone know why?

acherion··on Adobe tricks users into a 12 month contract
What staggers me is that everyone knows (in Australia) that the ACCC can be quite the toothless tiger in many aspects, yet the mere mention of those 4 letters can make Adobe fold over instantly.

It's so telling that Adobe reacts in this way, when they present their terms of conditions in such a dark-pattern manner. It's like they know what they're doing is super dodgy, but want to toss whatever reputation they have left out of the window, for the sum of just a few bucks a month. It's revolting.

acherion··on Jerrycan
Slight tangent here, but back when I owned a 1995 BMW 525i I discovered while browsing a parts catalog that BMW had developed a special emergency fuel jerry can[0] that slots into the spare wheel. The can was flat bottomed but the sides curved to fit inside the spare wheel (it was a full sized wheel back then) and it had a removable metal hose that clipped on the top when not in use. It was a fantastic piece of design. It held 9 litres if I recall correctly, so it wasn’t too heavy to carry when full (of course, you store it empty, and if you run out of fuel you take the empty can to the nearest fuel stop and fill up there).

I was lucky to find one on eBay that was in new condition, and I kept the can when I traded in my BMW for another BMW, unfortunately my current car uses runflats and hence no spare wheel, so I just keep my jerry can in the garage.

acherion··on My career of treating patients has ended
> Why not just do those things and prove to the people it doesn't work? None of those things are of any significant risk compared to already having COVID, and let the person have some medical autonomy... if they're going to die anyway, let the family know they tried what they wanted to try.

The problem with this is that in these people's minds, if <insert whatever magical cure to covid they know works> doesn't work, it's always some other factor than the cure itself that is causing it to not work. It doesn't prove to these people that those things don't actually work.

If the hospital administers the 10,000mg of Vitamin C, which won't work (according to what we know from medical experts), when the patient dies his family would just claim that the hospital didn't give him the right dosage, or they should've administered the vitamin C earlier, or the hospital claims that they administered the vitamin C but really didn't administer anythiung, or what they administered was not the right vitamin C / was not vitamin C at all. It doesn't cross these people's minds that maybe vitamin C doesn't work. Swap vitamin C with hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin or whatever other covid cure flavour of the month it currently is.

acherion··on Aesthetics Wiki
And us iOS users all know how well that works in this ecosystem. Android ported apps might be easy to deploy and maintain, but they're in the most part trash to use in iOS.
acherion··on Aesthetics Wiki
With that logic, why aren't all iOS apps just ported Android ones?
acherion··on Aesthetics Wiki
Completely agree. I use the No Man's Sky fandom site as it is very comprehensive (and the No Man's Sky iOS app "Assistant for No Man's Sky" is just a ported Android app, complete with Android interface, which really grates against iOS IMO) and the Fandom site is terrible with search. So many times I try to tap the top result and I inadvertedly open up eBay instead.

The irony that there is an Aesthetics wiki on the current iteration of Fandom is not lost on me.
