abosley··on A California aquifer may have crossed the point of no return
But the water. What about the water necessary to "restore the soil". The soil in question of course, was non-productive desert 50 years ago. We are doing input intensive farming in areas where the complex supply chain necessary to support is causing what some people call "externalities". Others, the tragedy of the commons. Well run societies try to use regulation to keep this from happening.
abosley··on Microsoft and OpenAI end their exclusive and revenue-sharing deal
The tech companies train their employees to say this in their social media guidance and training.
abosley··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
Agreed. What happens when every company lays off 10, 20, 40% of their staff? AI Agents don't pay taxes and dont participate in a meaningful amount of the consumer economy.
abosley··on New York’s budget bill would require “blocking technology” on all 3D printers
The Iranian guards, along with most of the armies in the second and third tier powers don't have elite anything. Please see Desert Storm, etc. Most of them ran. The ones that didn't were destroyed.
abosley··on ICE agent fatally shoots woman in Minneapolis
Apparently I can use deadly force most days in the trader joes parking lot - I've had people come that close to hitting me on a weekly basis in Seattle. She made a bad decision that cost her her life. The ICE Agent made an incompetent unprofessional one that took a life. They are not the same.
abosley··on How private equity is changing housing
Appraisals are generally done to ensure that the loan guarantor will be able to recover their investment if the party taking the loan defaults. Therefore, cash offers don't perform appraisals. Cash offers lower risk for the seller and provide fastest time to close the transaction.
abosley··on AI won't use as much electricity as we are told (2024)
As someone who has worked in hypercloud data center expansion and planning - I can confidently say this analysis is um, incomplete. W/out violating NDAs...I'd refer everone to multiple public articles talking about the situation in Ireland, where the hyperclouds are consuming well north of 22% of total energy production.
abosley··on Deskflow – Share a single keyboard and mouse between multiple computers
I’ve been a paid synergy user for 10? years. Works great for multiple computers + OS scenarios. It does flake out very occasionally. I’ll have check deskflow out for some embedded and pi projects I have coming up.
abosley··on Why don't we know how antidepressants work yet?
Even more evidence we have no idea what is going on: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10509198/#:~:te.... My silly anecdotal theory is that the vagal nerve and the gut are very involved in these various disfunctions for some populations....also see use of SSRIs as off-label solutions for GERD, IBS etc.
abosley··on Johns Hopkins medical school will be free for most after $1B donation
Pretty sure these are definitively non-profit organizations.
abosley··on Understanding the world science fiction convention
+1 Stross is decidedly the opposite of the stereotypical US west coast sci-fi author.
abosley··on Every Bitcoin payment 'uses a swimming pool of water'
I'm experiencing 4090 pricing violence.
abosley··on Private equity is devouring the U.S. economy
Quantity has a quality of its own. Dude named Piketty wrote almost 2k pages about wrt capital accumulation. The opposite of what you propose is what actually happens. For another example, please see Amazon.
abosley··on Taking Cannabis for Anxiety Probably Isn't Helping
Always view the negging of non-orthodox approaches to anything by the WSJ as anything but surprising. Furthermore, cui bono with respect to potential outcomes? I think it's the pharma industry.
abosley··on Why every microwave sucks these days
Did 15? seconds of fact checking the blog post since, as a home owner, it seemed wrong based on my little experience researching, purchasing and installing kitchen appliances in my own home. Midea controls 90% of the countertop microwave market. Even then, Panasonic, GE and others still manufacture their own. GE, whirlpool and Samsung control the Lionshare of the US market ~ 55% AND there is some evidence that the market for microwaves is growing at ~5% per year. I think there are better examples of total monopolies out there that the author could have chosen.
abosley··on As a psychiatrist, I diagnose mental illness, and help spot demonic possession (2016)
The author is in the process of writing a book on demonic possession...I may be a bit of a cynic here, but this may just be.....marketing?
abosley··on Microsoft Announces Q3 Earnings
MSFT has a partnership agreement with OpenAI. We didn't acquire them. Microsoft employee. Thoughts are my own.
abosley··on I fixed a parasitic drain on my car in 408 days
I sold my MazdaSpeed 3 due to a parasitic drain - it was at the dealership for 4 months at one point - with no resolution.
abosley··on Another pointless, confusing MS rebrand: Yammer becomes Viva Engage
Marketing PMs need work too :).
abosley··on Supreme Court rejects man’s bid to sue police over arrest for Facebook parody
No...that's the marketplace.
abosley··on Supreme Court rejects man’s bid to sue police over arrest for Facebook parody
I agree. Furthermore, imagine if the police were measured by the number of crimes they actually prevented versus the number they documented. Yes, I realize that these are orders of magnitude of difficulty in difference. The important thing being that one is what they are expected to do, the other what they actually do.
abosley··on SpaceX Raises Starlink Prices for Some Subscribers
In Bellevue WA - they raised my price by $20.
abosley··on Study Suggests Fructose Could Drive Alzheimer's Disease
Agreed....the part where it states that "Fructose produced in the brain could possibly lead to inflammation..." made me eye-roll...really hard.
abosley··on Tell HN: Salesforce is mandating RTO 3 days/wk for all employee
Microsoft showed the opposite. (Microsoft employee here). We were more productive by every common software dev measure when working from home. That's why Satya has been calling other CEOs out on their rather misguided need to "get the employees back in the office". It's a management problem (bad management) - not an employee problem. Focus on outcomes and create an environment that enables teams to achieve them...including ones with new hires and junior folks. It's possible. It just takes some (gasp) work. By managers.
abosley··on Microsoft Transitions U.S. FTEs to “Discretionary Time Off”
As a people manager in MSFT, I would welcome this - it's another great lever to get top performers to come work for you when done effectively. Steal the best employees from the worst managers - the ones who impose draconian leave policies on employees because they simply can, or, due to incompetence, can't enable their folks to take a reasonable (and I' say > than the previous explicit allocation) amount of leave.
abosley··on Microsoft Transitions U.S. FTEs to “Discretionary Time Off”
Leave is a liability for the corporation. The larger the liability, the more closely it is managed.
abosley··on Microsoft Transitions U.S. FTEs to “Discretionary Time Off”
The level of "required" varies by jurisdiction in the US.
abosley··on Microsoft Transitions U.S. FTEs to “Discretionary Time Off”
As a current employee (thoughts are my own, blah blah) in my experience this has been the defacto operating posture across many MSFT engineering teams for some time. They are paying out carried over leave - which is nice.
abosley··on Ask HN: Why haven't we seen a new email service?
Hey.com is new (1.5-2 years?) - has an opinionated view of email clients and workflows. I'll leave it to the reader/public to decide if it fits the "amazing" qualitative measure.
abosley··on Elizabeth Holmes found guilty
Go research wire fraud.
