abhayhegde··on This is a teenager
> Then we turn 18 and we're expected to be "adults" and figure things out. If we fail, we are punished. ... The world we've built has shaped his life.

This is a powerful message. A cynical (mostly realistic) outlook is that we are powerless pawns at the mercy of the powerful (read rich) in the world whose actions are ultimately reasons for blaming the powerless.

abhayhegde··on Anatomy of a credit card rewards program
Agreed. I thought I was having a bad day unable to comprehend the content, but the style is off putting.
abhayhegde··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
This is hideous though. Why should someone's preference for a mobile phone, chosen for their convenience, hinder them from texting those they care about?
abhayhegde··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
I understand the evil practices of Apple to lock you up in their walled garden such as iMessage, easy sync between the devices etc. But, ultimately, wouldn't the choice of buying those products in the consumer's hand?
abhayhegde··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
Irrespective of the OS, I recommend Zotero (https://www.zotero.org/).
abhayhegde··on Google Scholar PDF Reader
This looks great! Since they link it all to one's Gmail account, I wonder if they implement saving annotations to these PDFs and have them live on your Drive or elsewhere.

Edit: Also, Chrome now defaults to this extension for rendering any PDFs you load.

abhayhegde··on How to Start Google
While I absolutely agree with PG here on identifying a missing link and solving it with technology as your own project is a good way to own a startup, I also feel most of his examples are reminiscent of survivorship bias.

For every one of these giant trillion dollar companies, there are also thousands of companies that couldn't make it. Also, just by the distribution of it all, not every company can be a Google. Not trying to be pessimistic here; everyone should be able to try solving some problem as a project and have fun meanwhile. However, expecting a Google out of it could be a bit too demanding.

abhayhegde··on Walmart begins selling the Mac for the first time: M1 MacBook Air for $699
This should be higher up. They have it on Costco at $649 for a while now.
abhayhegde··on The Winners of the 2024 Dance Your PhD Contest
Dancing (or perhaps any extracurricular activity) can be a very distant topic to a hardcore academician, and I always wonder the people who excel at both! This is a wonderful way to recognize and honor them. Kudos!
abhayhegde··on Intel puts 1nm process (10A) on the roadmap for 2027
At what point do the effects of quantum tunneling are seen? I don't think they actually mean 1nm as the thickness, do they?
abhayhegde··on Ask HN: Whats your prediction for what 2030 will look like?
That seems incredibly pessimistic. Hopefully that's not how it goes. What should we be optimistic about?
abhayhegde··on Niagara Launcher
I am on Pixel 8. Stock launcher seems so much better than anything else.
abhayhegde··on 46% of Americans didn't read a book in 2023
Perhaps it doesn't have to be reading only a book, and you could very well be reading a scientific paper instead. But reading engages a whole different category of your psyche. I believe that most valuable content is often found in the form of a book rather than a movie. Perhaps there are more books to be read than there movies to be watched. But I hear you; these are much more meaningful than mindlessly scrolling away elsewhere.
abhayhegde··on Apple sold an estimated 180K Vision Pro units during the first pre-order weekend
Well, the truth is somewhere in between. A decent market for now perhaps depsite the hesitation in buying the first gen product because of its imperfections.
abhayhegde··on On the dimensionality of spacetime (1997) [pdf]
The link to Wikipedia page for the curious [0].

abhayhegde··on Dumbphone Finder
I would lean towards opting an old used Pixel or iPhone (ensuring the battery health is atleast 80%) to be a backup phone than strictly restricting to dumbphones. Keep it in airplane mode always, restrict it to a very few "survival" apps, place it in minimal battery consuming setup and it should work better as a backup than these phones.
abhayhegde··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
Seems like an attempt to recreate Blackberry experience. While it looks interesting, the use case is not as appealing, and it is really expensive! For context, Apple Magic Keyboard for PCs cost less than this, which in itself is a much pricier product.
abhayhegde··on Ask HN: What talks do you consider real gems?
The entire playlist of Learning to Learn by Richard Hamming is absolutely worth it [0], especially the introduction talk and "You and Your Research". They make you think hard about the effective ways to learn and ask important and pertinent questions.

abhayhegde··on Positive news from 2023
> (which I consider hugely positive; AI that is, not lack of mention).

Hugely positive for whom? A big mega corporation? The average human being stands to benefit minimally, but in the long run things don't like too good if everything is up for automation.

abhayhegde··on Stupid by choice
I don't agree with the author here. Willing to look stupid bears the motive that one is eager to learn despite what others might think of you. That is not the same as low-key manipulating someone else to have the job done for you.
abhayhegde··on A Camera, Not an Engine
This feels like calling every piece of literary work, be it a comment, or a novel as a part of the Library of Babel, instead of one's genuine creative endeavour. While that camera analogy felt like an eye-opener at once, it feels like an attempt to trivialize; we are not inventing anything new, but discovering what already exists. I disagree.
abhayhegde··on Charlie Munger has died
Remotely related, but that site of Stripe Press is great! Thanks for linking.
abhayhegde··on ArXiv receives $10M for upgrades
Thanks for a detailed response. I'd definitely like some extra income as a grad student, but I cannot earn outside of the university because of my visa restrictions. For all intents and purposes, you may as well consider me living paycheck-to-paycheck. I wish academia paid better.
abhayhegde··on ArXiv receives $10M for upgrades
I'm appalled at the perspective of middle class for you. If $500K is barely middle class, how would you classify a grad student? I suppose you were once a grad student too.
abhayhegde··on Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut?
> Change your job. Change your relationship. Change the city where you live. Change your primary hobby. Change your friends.

As much as I admire the sentiment here to change the surroundings that puts someone in the vicious cycle of negative thinking, most of these are impractical. Changing a job as easy as you say is a privilege most can't afford in my opinion.

abhayhegde··on Steve's Explanation of the Viterbi Algorithm (2003)
This is very much like the least action principle [0]. The optimal path between two points is the combination of optimal paths between the starting and an intermediate, and the intermediate and end points.

abhayhegde··on Why you shouldn't join Y Combinator
> If the system was ergodic, what’s happening to the collective would also translate to all individuals.

That's a definition of ergodicity I've never heard before. Ergodicity usually meant the phase space is fully occupied; in other words, a system tends to go through all possible configurations and sometimes irrespective of initial conditions.

abhayhegde··on Austria rail operator OeBB unveils new night trains
As someone who has traveled on OBB and non-acela Amtrak, how would you describe Acela journey? Is it a significantly better experience?
abhayhegde··on Show HN: I automated half of my typing
This is a pretty cool project! I am concerned about how reliant this is on my memory and if the keybindings keep changing every once a while, adapting to new ones might actually be time consuming.

This is what I thought while I was learning Vim too, but now I honestly prefer Vim keybindings everywhere. So maybe this is not too bad. I would definitely try out if one can also build a vimtutor like version for this usecase.
