abhayhegde··on Nokia's internal presentation after iPhone was launched (2007) [pdf]
Nokia correctly predicted that iPhone would stand for "coolness" factor. It's amazing how Apple carried that brand since its inception and precisely what allows it to levy "Apple tax".

The execs even noted that the downside of iPhone would be non-removable battery. It is commendable that Apple changed the industry standard to something worse without even being in the top 10 in 2008.

abhayhegde··on A day in the life of a prolific voice phishing crew
I have been receiving various spam texts under the pretext of USPS has lost my mails and would like to reaffirm my address to them. The scammers are pretty smart to build an identical looking to site USPS (pretty easy if they copy CSS but change the endpoint for form submissions). Those with the keenest eyes and a bit of commonsense can dodge these types of phishing.
abhayhegde··on Fixing America's elevators is becoming a heavy lift
In other words, excessive regulation makes the trustworthiness hard.
abhayhegde··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Sure, but I'm not inclined to believe that number on its own. Practically, even the cheapest grocer like Aldi could turn out to be expensive than the quoted $3.37.
abhayhegde··on Why America is stuck with an elevator crisis
Counterpoint: VISA and Mastercard.
abhayhegde··on Engineer eats efficiently for $2.50 a day (2016)
Considering this is from 2015, I wonder how much does inflation bring $2.5 a day to.
abhayhegde··on Reflections
I used to look forward to his takes. Some of the past posts were genuinely insightful, but now all I hear is the cliched difficult road leading to an AGI whose consequences always seem utterly dire for anyone involved, perhaps except OpenAI.
abhayhegde··on Always go to the funeral (2005)
In my opinion, matters of respect and kindness are given more than due consideration at death and perhaps only then for most people. Sure, go to the funeral and pay your respect, show how much they meant to you, but perhaps, do it much before. Do it way before death is even a thing.
abhayhegde··on GenChess
This is so awesome! Well, it'll stay awesome until they decide to kill randomly on a bad Tuesday.
abhayhegde··on New iMac with M4
The displays on these iMacs are so crisp, but disappointing that 24" only. Happy that the base RAM is increased, perhaps trying to pander to AI audience. But, who buys these at costs almost at Macbook Pros? Isn't this just a monitor?
abhayhegde··on Writes and Write-Nots
I agree very much with Paul here. Many a times as I'm thinking, I realize none of those are legitimate thoughts until I can put them in words. Describing your intuition is fundamentally a hard task, because it is trying to decipher the vague strands of reflection. Clarity emerges only when focused harder.
abhayhegde··on Show HN: Prioritise your to-do list with Eisenhower Matrix, and break them down
What stops me from using a spreadsheet for this? I mean why is it priced?
abhayhegde··on alphaXiv: Open research discussion on top of arXiv
Great platform for invigorating research discussions! But seeing only AI based (or broadly CS based) research as featured papers is a bit discouraging. Perhaps there isn't enough critical mass for other topics yet.
abhayhegde··on alphaXiv: Open research discussion on top of arXiv
Wow, how is this not getting enough attention when it is almost the same thing?!
abhayhegde··on alphaXiv: Open research discussion on top of arXiv
Does not have to be fake or anything. You move from one institution to the other and cannot maintain it forever anyway.
abhayhegde··on alphaXiv: Open research discussion on top of arXiv
Perhaps by linking to their actual arxiv id?
abhayhegde··on We built the city of Colombo in Cities:Skylines
This is crazy! What if one day the citizens in the game can be mapped to real ones also?!
abhayhegde··on There's a place for everyone
That's a fair point. I kind of hate that the world has come to this. Everything needs to be justified through an economic lens. I wonder if life was easier in the past with regards to this.
abhayhegde··on There's a place for everyone
> The implication here is that everyone has one best place, but in reality there are many local maximums.

This is even better than what the article argues and thus not an antithesis. The author tries to convince us that there exists atleast a place for everyone, not that there aren't many.

> The idea that we have one “best” fit is the self-help equivalent of “perfect is the enemy of good”.

Again, it's not that there is one "best". The idea is everyone can be valuable through atleast one means. I don't see how that is related to perfectionism.

abhayhegde··on The tiny chip that powers Montreal subway tickets
Is it possible that the Android implementation could be less secure given the lack of a dedicated secure element? Perhaps not, but I am curious why Apple does it that way.
abhayhegde··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
I didn't understand what you disagree with.

I'm glad companies create such useful tools. I'm just saying the prospect of continuation seems to be contingent on whether it's profitable (at least in the long run). Hopefully, Google doesn't take that approach with some of its products is all I'm saying.

abhayhegde··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
Hopefully many other important things by Google don't bite the dust. I extensively use Keep, Scholar, and Finance. I don't see if any of them make money for Google which is what seems like the only metric they care about anyway.
abhayhegde··on Parable of the Sofa
That is a good point. I would also think that buyers must vote with their money. Stop buying cheaply made products as much as possible, when an alternative slightly-expensive yet well made things exist. Of course, easier said than done, especially when money is a constraint.
abhayhegde··on Parable of the Sofa
> Every time I read takes like this I think people forget why big brands exist?

I think the article made a great point why big brands exist -- to deliver on the promise of unbridled growth, often leading to enshittification.

> But big brands could offer customer service just fine if people wanted it.

The experience suggests that they usually offload that to a third-party vendor to cut costs and we all know that does not track as good as small, family owned, locally sourced, your trustworthy shop.

> But, surprise, this second option doesn't scale.

True. Probably does not have to. A sufficiently wide distribution of such businesses is just as good.

abhayhegde··on Show HN: ChatGPT UI for rabbit holes
This reminds me of Andy Matuschak's notes website [0]. I dig this view for much better understanding.

abhayhegde··on Turn Your iPhone into a Dumb Phone
It just feels wild to suggest turning a $1000 phone into something a $100 phone. However, I see the appeal.
abhayhegde··on Show HN: Chessdream – Generate realistic chess positions with AI
This looks amazing! To generate multiple (almost) equal positions with a given set of pieces can be handy while practicing. I love that there is a way to analyze it on Lichess as well. Would it make sense to export a PGN file of the position as well?

I'm not sure how to put it, but would be great to also include an option to simulate a position with a given opening. For example, 15 moves down the line of playing Queen's Gambit accepted variation with the given pieces on the board would be instructive in learning what's an equal position and how to improve middle game etc. Maybe too hard to implement, I understand.

I saw your submission on r/chess also.

abhayhegde··on The $499 Google Pixel 8a is official, with 120 Hz display, 7 years of updates
I own a Pixel 8. I've been impressed with it's performance and the general feel of using it over the past months. With Pixel 8a, the gap between A series phones and the non-pro version seems to be diminishing way too fast.

They still need to fix the modem issues and thereby increase battery life.

abhayhegde··on The $499 Google Pixel 8a is official, with 120 Hz display, 7 years of updates
I don't understand why the design is bad. Of course it's subjective, but what puts you off here?
abhayhegde··on Apple introduces M4 chip
What's the endgame with iPads though? I mainly use it for consumption, taking notes and jotting annotations on PDFs. Well, it's a significant companion for my work, but I cannot see if I've any reason to upgrade from iPad Air 5, especially given the incompatibility of the Pencil 2nd gen.
