abdabab··on Silicon Valley is on edge as Trump's immigration policy sparks fears
That’s not true. It’s a dual intent visa [1].

> Dual Intent: The H-1B visa type carries “dual intent” which means that the holder may intend to return to his/her home country or intend to immigrate to the United States.

However, it does fall under the broad category of temporary work visa, which is possibly why people wrongly assume it’s a “contract” visa.

> I mean all USA debt delinquencies are currently between the same levels as Q1 and Q2 of 2008...

Where did you find this? None of the data in https://fred.stlouisfed.org/categories/32440 confirms this other than the small bank credit card delinquencies.

abdabab··on Ask HN: How do you decide what's worth working on?
Mainly Blind, LinkedIn and searching. After an offer is made and if you’re taking time to decide, recruiters often sets up a meeting with an executive to talk to you.
abdabab··on Ask HN: How do you decide what's worth working on?
I tried that. It didn’t work out for me. Politics, organizational instability, bad executives and a never stopping pager are all insufferable. It kills the very thing, the entirety of joie de vivre that is the main reason for making money.

Now choosing job is a multi-variable analysis for me. I pay more attention to the executives.

Wasn’t economy always effed up that way? I can’t think of a time economy wasn’t driven by corporate greed to make more profit.

Pittsburgh, PA has plenty of houses under 100k. Here’s one that’s less than 250 miles away from you. Although this particular one is not a countryside house [1].

Point taken.
abdabab··on I worked at Google for -10 days
> Google's revenues were flat last year but costs were up.

Wrong. Google made 181.69 billion in 2020, 256.74B in 2021 [1] and 283B in 2022 [2]. A 10% YoY increase [2] is better than most of the years they have been public. They possibly made more money in last 2.5 years than all the years they have been public combined.

abdabab··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
My impression is Twitter handles traffic and complexity in a different magnitude than Netflix in the 2000. Internet usage was significantly smaller back then.

On-prem is a good point though. I don’t know a lot about their core infra.

abdabab··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
I think she never intended to be a billionaire. She doesn’t fall under the usual bucket of billionaires.
abdabab··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
I’m sure Netflix in 2000 had a lot simpler tech stack than Twitter in 2020. However your point is taken.

It’s an interesting thought experiment to think what would happen if Amazon fails. It can bring down a big chunk of US economy with it.

> People have left Snapchat for TikTok[1]. Social media users, especially youth, are fickle and the industry relies heavily on network effects.

The article you mentioned didn’t describe an exodus of users leaving Snapchat to use TikTok. It describes how TikTok is now advertisers’ preferred platform to reach younger audience, where Snapchat used to dominate.

Snapchat added 15 million daily active users last quarter. [1]

abdabab··on Facebook reportedly laying off thousands of employees
> "Best people" according to what metric, other than salary?

Facebook scales. It’s not easy to scale computing infrastructure to support billions of daily active users. Only a handful of companies can do that right now. On top of that they scaled an ad business that can target billions of people. There is only one other company in the world who can do that.

> What technology has Facebook developed with all of those "best people" that could compare to what Bell Labs did with a group of fewer than 10?

See it’s less about “quality”, it’s more about “quantity”. Scaling is a different problem on its own. I adore Unix but I admire what Facebook did as well. Scaling any project over 10 exceptional people is one thing and scaling a project with 10,000 engineers is a completely different thing and Facebook succeeded at that.

Whether that’s a good thing or not that they have succeeded is a separate discussion.
