aarongolliver··on eBay bans sales of face masks and hand sanitizers to combat price gouging
Hand sanitizers use alcohol, not the same thing as a "prescription" antibiotic. The same resistance arguments do not really apply the same way.
aarongolliver··on eBay bans sales of face masks and hand sanitizers to combat price gouging
they don't have resistance
aarongolliver··on 5/3nm Wars Begin
It has about the same meaning as the 5 or 3 in "core i5" or "core i3". It's all marketing.
aarongolliver··on It costs $10k to ‘own’ a Chick-fil-A franchise
I haven't seen any evidence that they've _continued_ to donate money, just that they said "OK, we might keep donating" as a way to calm down people who were angry by the announcement.

This article (and all the others I've read) only talks about donations that happened 2 and 3 years ago.

aarongolliver··on Tesla Cybertruck
It did, and it is now. This is one of those things that's trivial to check before you tell someone they're wrong. Not everyone could watch it exactly live. Everyone who was was kicked out.
aarongolliver··on California fault capable of producing a magnitude 8 earthquake has begun moving
If you haven't, take a look at the crowd sourced real-time lightning maps. Loads if sensors are scattered world-wide triangulating lightning strikes - there are even websites that estimate the sound wave as it grows & you'll hear the thunder right as the circle envelopes your location. Very fun to play around with during storms!
aarongolliver··on EPYC SAP-SD 2-tier benchmark results
Basically that you can't return the chip to AMD if ecc doesn't work.

aarongolliver··on “What the Hardware Does” Is Not What Your Program Does: Uninitialized Memory
Spent the week trying to figure out how to reimplement __builtin_add_overflow (et al) on Windows and boy is it a chore. The previous implementer had literally just used operator+ in a function called "safe_add" and I was dumbstruck.
aarongolliver··on Why the C++ standard ships every three years
It doesn't say it's a memory barrier, but it absolutely has to be for the code to work.

I agree I should be careful with "first-order approximations", but honestly I was being gentle because I do love drdobbs. But all of the things it talked about have been replaced with things that aren't broken in subtle and hard to debug way.

Volatile simply cannot be used a general purpose, portable, synchronization primitive.

aarongolliver··on Why the C++ standard ships every three years
This article is nearly 2 decades old and gives very bad advice for multithreaded c++ programming. To a first approximation, volatile should never be used for multithreading safety.
aarongolliver··on This week’s dead Google product is Google Trips
On mobile I get the redirect, on my chrome desktop I don't
aarongolliver··on I tried to make Facebook's news feed random and fun
I set the random wiki URL to be my browser homepage years ago, so I get a random page each time I open up a new window. I suggest everyone do it!
aarongolliver··on Efficient IO with io_uring [pdf]
Can you (or someone) explain _why_ the model translate to files on disk? Is it that there's a different set of operations that need to be supported? (you can't seek a socket I suppose)
aarongolliver··on Microsoft loses control over Windows Tiles
Disabling animations in Android can have some surprising æffects. For me the little "car" in Lyft/Uber refuse to budge without closing & reopening the app. Some status indicators go haywire too (like loading bubbles in youtube, and fake frequency histograms in music apps).

My laptop disables animations in low power mode and ironically that makes it feel faster than "performance" mode.

aarongolliver··on Why Do Buses Bunch?
Same happens in Seattle (and we have some nice services that show you the GPS locations of all the busses on the route, so you can be pretty sure an empty one is right on its way)
aarongolliver··on Intel lays off hundreds of tech administrators
I have a friend who is one (I believe) and his job is to admin huge network drives that are used by R&D researchers.
aarongolliver··on Docker might be eating your batteries?
They're using Debian on the laptop so there is no "second" operating system.
aarongolliver··on How to Start Learning Computer Graphics Programming
Processing is amazing (and what I switched to after I started hitting Flash performance limitations). They have great documentation and tutorials on their website too, and I felt it's little IDE made it really easy for beginners to get started with it.
aarongolliver··on Ask HN: What cities have gigabit fiber internet access?
I've been able to get gigabit everywhere I've lived so far in Seattle (through either Wave-G or CenturyLink), but I only have a sample size of '3 addresses in 2 neighborhoods'.

Cost was around $80-100/month.

Symmetric

Dynamic ip address, but CenturyLink link did not support IPv6.

have had no issues hosting web services.
