a-saleh··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
I would say, if you can afford it, and have some reasonable reason to continue with masters, stay at uni.

As far as I know, Amazon is not that good of an employer. If you would manage to stick wit them for those two years, it still would be what, ~100k in lost income? And no job on the CV for those two years? But those can be mitigated and are way less certain than achieving a degree in 2 years

a-saleh··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
I thought Totyota is still one of the EV leaders. Alongside Kia and Hyundai?
a-saleh··on Ask HN: How are you all staying sane?
I am from former ost-block (weird it still has weight even 35+ years later) and my grandpa was Palestinian. The overal feeling is, that this was always the case. Sometimes we win some, sometimes there is prosperity and oasis of stability but in general, it is mostly chaos, even if it seems stable.

People in protesting in 1988 thought communist politburo is here to stay forever and maybe we get concessions, iron curtain fell year or so later.

It does feel more stressful as I have a kid and a house and a mortgage.

And maybe it works out and I remember my greatgrandma who built her her with her husband in late 1920's and the hous survived a world war and two occuppations and her daughter inherited it could sell it and lived off of it for decade in her pension.

And maybe it works out differently and I remember my grandpa where he had to run from his home country and would never see the house his grew up in but died in a nice flat with big family that cared about him.

Everything apart from global termonuclear war or literal paperclip-scenario level AI take-over feels survivable. And those are real risks. Like, that is the reason I celebrate Stanislav Petrov day!

Apart from that ... I am lucky I live in the city where musicians still play live and tickets to small venues are under 10 Eur and people still dance. So I dance. It helped me through my divorce, it helps me keep my current relationship alive, it helped me find community both local and across europe. It was nice to go to a small gig of an unknown bluesband in London and commending the guy who organized that for nice event and he went "Oh, where are you from? Ha, I have friends from there, we danced in Vienna!".

a-saleh··on Ask HN: When do you expect ChatGPT moment in robotics?
I think there will be a sort of ~meeting in the middle. I.e. when friend was furnishing his appt. he chose specifically the sort of furniture that will make it easier for his robotic vacuum to work. I wouldn't be surprised if there will be some extra allowance for autonomous vehicles comming in next ~5 years. Stuff like that.
a-saleh··on US could ask foreign tourists for five-year social media history before entry
On one hand, you are clearly exaggerating.

On the other hand, the actual conversations I hear my friends having about business-trips to US are more stressed than conversation my dad used to have with my mom when he was traveling to do business for banks in India, Pakistan or Russia decade or two ago.

a-saleh··on If you're going to vibe code, why not do it in C?
From what I have seen successful ~vibe-coders in my cirle are really bullish on type-safety and testing. Up to a point I have seen a guy porting his favourite property-based testing framework to TypeScript :D

So, vibecoding in C feels like playing with loaded gun.

a-saleh··on Ask HN: Are there any viable Android phones for a power user to buy nowadays?
I have been wondering if this is one of those things you could solve with a ~case. Like - clicks keyboard might be overdoing it, but getting a scroll-wheel or a trackball under my thumb on the side, could be nice and doable! :D
a-saleh··on Ask HN: Are there any viable Android phones for a power user to buy nowadays?
First, mint-mobile is specific in some way? That part shouldn't be a problem.

Second, you mostly get to choose one.

Small enough? Yeah, Unihertz Jelly Star is tiny. Maybe you try one of the foldable flip-phones, Razr 2025 allows you to mostly live in the outside screen.

Custom os? Is there anybody else than Fairphone these days?

Buttons? Unihertz Titan emulates old blackberry passports, so it might be too big for you.

I recently bought Galaxy Fold 6 and live inside of the Nixdroid terminal :D

a-saleh··on Why don't you use dependent types?
I think I mostly liked those type-systems that lean towards dependent, but not go all the way.

Purescript might be favourite? Even by default you get more power than i.e. vanilla Haskell, with row-types. But then you can get type-level list, typelevel string, even typelevel regex! And you use these through type-classes in a kind of logic-programming way.

a-saleh··on Why Is SQLite Coded In C
Ok, I didn't expect such a high praise for rust. I am not joking.
a-saleh··on Ask HN: Low entry barrier hobby that can potentially generate income?
Find some thing you enjoy creating digitally and just do that and publish.

Straight ort is probably toughest to sell, but ... if you enjoy it, one day there might be enough fans to sign up to patreon, buy your prints, book, e.t.c.

Like, you are probably choosing the Brandon Sanderson route, "Even if I never publish any of these novels, and I will die with 20 books worth of written stories that almost nobody knows about, it was still worth it!" As late sit pterry said, "Writing is the most fun you can have by yourself." You probably won't become next Sanderson or next Weir (Martian was self-published as a web-series) ... I would think that if you find your audience, you could become someone like qntm?

Also, books that teach about stuff have easier time finding an audience.

Especially if you already have a hobby that you can write about. This is the thing, you need something you are excited about or at least persistent about doing. My partner has been training dogs for over a decade, and writing training plans is not as lucrative to have as the main income, but it scales better than training in person, right ;)

Simmilarily, you could make games, publish them on itch and probably won't become next Maddy Thorne (of Celleste fame) but you could become new Brozef (look up Felvidek, it started as his university ...thesis? I think? And now it is like a game on steam and people even bought it!)

Boardgames/tabletop can be a thing - itch can work there too, but there might be a local game jam where you could cobble something together and then somebody might print&play it?

People still like to get ~human made assets. 2d art. 3d models. I used to faf around in blender a decade ago and even I heeded the siren call of a well rigged character for 10$ :D

Yeah ... reading this after myself - you are thinking the wrong way around. You need something you are excited about or at least persistent about doing. If you have several, yeah thinking about which one is more commercially viable can be good. If you have something concrete in mind, that is like a project that is good too, but you should be honest with yourself if you really need the money, or if this is a "eh, could be nice if something comes out of it, but it was time well spent even if not"

a-saleh··on Getting tired of Helm – any better way to handle deployments in Kubernetes?
Recently I have been writing more stings in jsonnet. If I were with more haskell-friendly team, might even try dhall. In general, I feel like writing the yaml in something else than yaml is the way to go, and as long as you get imports and way to do templating that is not just string interpolation, you are good.
a-saleh··on Getting tired of Helm – any better way to handle deployments in Kubernetes?
Why just simple?

T.b.h. if I were to write a manifest generator, I would still probably commit the thing into a repo and let argo do the rest. Maybe even fiddled around to make the generator into a config-management-plugin ... but that feels like over-doing it.

a-saleh··on Best Linux distro in 2025 for non-experts
Fedora is good. Ubuntu is still good. Weirdly - if he has steam-deck and a desktop setup, fiddling around with steam-os in desktop mode can be a good enough entry-point.
a-saleh··on Ask HN: Difficulties with going back to school
I would actually look at EU countries? Maybe if you feel like your country of origin is too much of a backwater, sure, look further, but as long as you are within EU, university courses come between 1k and 5k/semester? Which, even with the more expensive option, you are well below 60k.

And - you probably are too off path for "I am going to pick school for the prestige credentials", you already have 8 years of SWE in your CV, it is fine if your uni will be something random in Europe that works under Bologna Process.

So - focus on schools that seem to be teaching well - or possibly, if you have becomming an academic in your sights, ones that would support that well. Also, I have several friends in their 30's and 40's doing university courses targeted at working people - they have weekend courses every other weekend and otherwise self study. They will end up with proper diploma and everything.

a-saleh··on Ask HN: How are you having fun?
Dancing. Roughly once a month I go to some small festival nearby, mostly live music - either oldschool swing, or blues and dance my hear out. These are not too big, like between 200 and 500 people? And I am mostly recognizing the core 100 by their faces, and more and more of them are genuine friends.

Took me around a year or two of several hours a week in courses to become comfortably intermediate in my dancing skills, and from that point onwards, it is mostly just fun!

a-saleh··on Best social network/forum for a beginner self-taught developer?
Ask your friends about discords they are in. That is where everybody I know is sort of moving towards.
a-saleh··on Differentiable Logic Cellular Automata
Minecraft seems too big. But this looks like a thing that you could give few hours of tetris and it will spit out a working scheme for tetris.
a-saleh··on The False Summit – When 90% done becomes 50%
I heard it as a saying in game-development. "When you have the game 90% completed, remember that now you will have to complete the second 90% to actually ship."
a-saleh··on Johnny.Decimal – A system to organise your life
There is some level of organization you have to achieve to be at least somewhat successful.

I think these sort of more complex systems are there to help you if your problem is being overwhelmed, or if you have need to have things classified and under control.

If your problem is the baseline fact that sticking to any sort of system is hard ... haha, same, and then you need a system that is simple.

I currently live by my google-calendar. Alerts in advance, trying to put everything there, to a point I https://sectograph.com/ as my watchface on my smartwatch, just so that I won't forget what I need to do today.

Also, writing out my daily todo-list in a ~private-ish channel I have on friend's discord suprisingly works better just having a todolist. Because my friends see that and that makes my brain actually care :)

So, yeah, "just need to figure out ways to handle my general messiness and get it to work" is right on the money.

It is like with that Bullet Journal thing. You see the elaborate ones from people that love their melticulous templates. But when I used it for a month or so successfully, it was just about the simple bulet-points, sometimes with dates, review once a day. I stopped because I lost the notebook, so ... oversharing on discord it is - I probably am procrastinating there anyway :D

a-saleh··on Is Fossil SCM Down?
If a website doesn't have a status page, and you don't have a better groupchat to ask, asking on HN seems fine :)
a-saleh··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
I have strong feeling that in the past 50 or so years, we often have traded resiliency for efficiency. I think we might have gone too far.

That doesn't mean that being deliberately inefficient will improve resiliency. Also, some of the deliberate inefficiency (i.e. looking at weird thing us healthcae/health-insurance system has going on) is more ... extractive? That sounds like the word I am looking for.

a-saleh··on Ask HN: Advice for someone entering their 30s
Hm, it really depends. What is your situation? Like, my early 30's were about trying to keep job while being in a failing marriage with a small kid.

I would give somebody in my situation different advice than i.e. single guy just promoted to first ~senior position in his second job after college.

a-saleh··on Ask HN: Tips for Interview Preparations with ADHD?
First, figure out things that can help you manage. Past 2 years I am on Concerta prescription and it made a big difference. Previously, high quality green tea til lunch, exercise in the afternoon and early bed time did help, but was very annoying to keep up withou support of partner/room-mate. Preparing with someone else might help - maybe think back to your strategies that helped you survive your Msc.

Second, lean into your network. It is harder to impress people you don't know, if you have someone on the inside that can give you a referral, help you prep, that can make all of the difference.

Third, consider if you are applying for jobs that make things harder for you. I.e. I found out the hard way, that I will never be a self-motivating solo dev. I am a decent ops-guy, can do SRE and currently have great time working as reasonably senior QE at RedHat.

Fourth, this might hurt your motivation, but also help your anxiety and maybe give you a break to sort out the meds/therapy/support - few months runway is the time to consider what is the worst case scenario. Does it mean you go to your parents (might not be possible, but if it is just really awkward, it could beat being homeless), does it mean mhaving to move to a place with lower cost-of-life (this cost money and could eat a bunch of your runway), does it mean "I am an uber-driver now and crash of a friends couch" or you are literally at risk for living out of a tent? Time to make that scary/annoying plan is now.

a-saleh··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
I did. But if several nation-states would pledge larger grants, I would have some hope that i.e. the trucks with the building materials would get through border-crossings, e.t.c.

Individual donations are a drop in a very big and leaky bucket.

a-saleh··on Israel, Hamas reach ceasefire deal to end 15 months of war in Gaza
I am hoping at least for some sort of "Ok, now we pour money and bricks and concrete into Gaza to help them rebuild."
a-saleh··on Ask HN: How do I rebuild at 36yo after a checkered career of undiagnosed ADHD?
Find a job that is on the intersection of what you know and what will fit you.

I am 35 and have been diagnosed with ADHD ~year ago. Meds did help, like by 50% with my ability to start and complete things. On the other hand, country I live in is somewhat stingy on psychopharmatics, so I am glad I have at least the meds I have.

Meds don't help with memory, unfortunately, you will need to keep your system you have cobbled together over years.

The meds actually do help with the rejection sensitivity more than I anticipated. But this seems like the thing you will actually need to work on to compensate for. It can be hard, things that will work for you will be counter-intuitive, but becoming some sort of "trustworthy professional that is nice to work with" is doable and worth price in gold.

One of the epiphanies that led me there was ... people don't actually need perfection, they mostly need to be able to rely on what you told them. Work with them, pairing helps me there.

I work in QE for a big corp - specifically RedHat. I now know I shouldn't look for jobs that sound interesting but would require me to self-manage. I need other people to keep me on track and reasonably well defined goals.

But I also need novelty and exploration.

So QE works. I would assume SRE would work as well, and possibly a technical enough support role.

Working in a big-enough corp to allow for latteral moves is helping plenty too.

a-saleh··on Ask HN: How to Emigrate from EU and Where?
Hey, if you find a country that is not ~in decline, let me know.

Also ... where are you getting the "sin tax for travel ownership" rhetoric from? Like, I follow several eu green parties, and anytime one of them starts with something on banning air-trafic, they get shuffles to the fringe.

I actually like the EU, and if you have specific gripes, you probably will be able to find a country that is more pareto-optimal than one you currently reside in.

If you are after money, USA is still the place to be. Just look at levels.fyi

But I think you are looking at it wrong.

If you are vaguely depressed about the current situation, running away will not help you. Figure out what you want to run towards.

a-saleh··on Ask HN: Great maker projects for 8th grade kids and above?
13 year old can do almost anything. Only problem is ... scope, I guess?

Like, I was making games in Visual Basic. Made a little Tyrian clone. It had total of two levels :D

a-saleh··on Standing desk might be as bad as sitting all day
I tought this is common knowledge. Sitting all day - bad. Standing all day, also bad. Like, first docummented RSI were people standing at their stations in manufacturing, right?
