_tom_··on Netflix prepares to send its final red envelope
It's worse than that, they want it dead. Presumably because it competes with (and is better than?) the streaming service. IIRC, Redbox offered to buy it. No interest.
_tom_··on MacWhisper: Transcribe audio files on your Mac
I've run into that, many times. Would be nice to have a fix.
_tom_··on AI real-time human full-body photo generator
It doesn't work, either.
_tom_··on AI real-time human full-body photo generator
I tried to add more clothing, both with the prompt, and with the clothing tab. Got the same tiny costume each time. Trying to generate D&D character, got chippendale.
_tom_··on Show HN: I wrote a RDBMS (SQLite clone) from scratch in pure Python
How much of the SQLite test suite will pass?
_tom_··on Ask HN: How come YC startups offering <80k$/year?
Anyone have historical data? If this is not what they paid last year and before, it's clearly offshoring.

If, as some speculate, it's just part of the comp and equity is. The other, then it would have been the same last year.

_tom_··on Ask HN: Where have you found community outside of work?
Meetup.com is worth the $100 for this.
_tom_··on One Click Deepfake
I won't test talent, it will show you appearance, but the performance will still be delivered like the original.
_tom_··on I don't need to clean up my desktop and downloads folders in macOS (2021)
First thing I do on a new mac is change the settings to save screenshots to ~/Desktop/Screenshots. Takes ten seconds and pays off for the rest of the time you use that Mac.

cmd-shit-5, then options.

_tom_··on Watching Paint Dry: The unexpectedly interesting story of car coatings
So it was workers wearing the bracelet that caused the problem, not end customers?
_tom_··on How to Sink a $3B Dollar Submarine: Leave a Hatch Open
My car will not start in gear, nor will it start without a foot on the brake.

Understanding and preventing human error is a basic part of design. Especially for things that cost $3B.

_tom_··on Prime Video service dumps microservices, cuts AWS bill 90%
Don't buy retail, buy wholesale, unless you are buying a small amount.
_tom_··on Rate The Landlord: Anonymously share information with tenants like you
> But I understand the way it was designed (unverified students, double ratings, correlation of positive reviews to ease of the class...) did it in.

It's still there and being used.

_tom_··on Incognito ChatGPT with no account required
Aren't the captchas done by google, and they provide tracking information?

Kind of defeats the purpose of anonymity when the first thing you hit is a tracker.

_tom_··on Why do studios use Roman numerals in the copyright notice in the end credits?
Recall that Roman numerals are also used for movie sequels. This clearly isn't about concealing the age.
_tom_··on Substack is the biggest threat to newsletters ever
Most people don't have a very long horizon.

Consider the stock market.

_tom_··on Midjourney AI Guide
I find that the more complicated the prompt, the less detail I see in people. With simple prompts I get photorealistic, but with complicated I get animation quality.

Not sure if this is just my prompts or something general.

_tom_··on Tinder Is Working on a $500 Subscription
Tinder is one of the few (edit: potentially) honest matchmaking services. As in, it doesn't lose if you find a partner, since most matches are intentionally short term.

Matchmakers that promise long term relationships have an inherent conflict of interest.

_tom_··on There's plenty of money to fix roads and bridges, but not enough workers
Shop classes (and "Home Ec") vanished decades before computer classes showed up. At least in my part of the US.
_tom_··on Launch HN: Play.ht (YC W23) – Generate and clone voices from 20 seconds of audio
My stepmother tells she has been getting this type of scam, minus the accurate voice, for years. About one a year.

I'm not sure she would have spotted the scam if it had sounded right.

_tom_··on Tell HN: Airbnb can charge you anything and there is nothing you can do about it
You could file a complaint with the local police. I would think that filing a fraudulent claim would be a crime.
_tom_··on Show HN: I want to change how people buy health supplements
I think I'd trust independent testing more than supply chain.

How expensive is testing?

_tom_··on Ring LLC home security company ransomed by ALPHV ransomware
"Ransomed" means they paid the ransom, not they demanded it.
_tom_··on The floppy disk just won’t die
TLDR; there's one company left selling ( and reselling floppies).

And, yes, if you have old floppies in good condition you can donate them.

_tom_··on The floppy disk just won’t die
Yes. See this article: https://eyeondesign.aiga.org/we-spoke-with-the-last-person-s...
_tom_··on Show HN: Lander, a lunar lander style web game
Left and right are backwards on a phone. I'm sure I'd adapt after a few more games, but it's annoying.
_tom_··on How to weaponize the Yubikey (2019)
I've seen Bluetooth speakers that registered as a keyboard, allowing similar attacks.

I returned them.

_tom_··on Show HN: Phind.com – Generative AI search engine for developers
Interesting.

I asked it to write an essay on a subject I'm interested in, and an authority on. The essay, without citation, quoted whole sentences from both me, and wikipedia, verbatim. This seems like a bad thing. Certainly you can't use articles it writes if you don't know if it's plagiarizing.

_tom_··on On quitting, failing, and, “I find a lot of people who should quit don't”
And what of those whose art isn't appreciated until after their death? Should they have quit? Van Gogh comes to mind.
