Yes

Arc Browser on macOS and Windows is a decent example
_thisdot··on Firefox Sidebar and Vertical tabs: try them out
Seems to me that Arc is inspired by Operating Systems in general.

- Workspaces/Desktops with mouse gestures - Spotlight like Quick Launch - Alt Tab like Tab switch - Window management within the browser - Dedicated area for Media control - Widgets on mouse hover

_thisdot··on Every company should be owned by its employees
I’m looking at this from a casual stock market perspective. If I came to know the CEO of the company is unhappy and planning to leave, surely I expect the stock prices to take a hit. And the recovery will mostly depend on their successor and is altogether an expensive exercise
_thisdot··on Every company should be owned by its employees
Counter point. Most of salary is decided based on how much of a loss it would be if you left. A CEO leaving a company can immediately lead to serious consequences whereas an individual employee can leave and no one might bat an eye

Is anyone expecting anything more at this point? Maybe it’ll improve over time. But expecting Apple’s implementation of ChatGPT to be better than ChatGPT is unrealistic

_thisdot··on Why does part of the Windows 98 Setup program look older than the rest? (2020)
I was 12 and they sent a CD to me in India from the US for free! They have since discontinued the program. But meant a lot to me as a kid
_thisdot··on Why time seems to pass faster as we age
It’s amazing how quick we forget things we thought at the moment were so important. Not in the same vein as journaling, but I’d been keeping a list of Notion entries on things I found important enough to keep notes on at work for the past 2-3 years.

It’s different from my JIRA work log or Todoist list of completed tasks in that these are not everything I did, but just the important items. The things where I ran the risk of getting stuck

Come appraisal process, I’ll have forgotten most things I worked on in the year. My imposter syndrome creeps in, but this Notion page keeps me sane!

With this proof in hand, I’ve started journaling. I use the Apple Journal app. And it’s doing a good job of prompting me!

_thisdot··on Air Canada Has to Honor a Refund Policy Its Chatbot Made Up
Can’t they link to sources? Like Perplexity.ai or Arc Search does.

I don’t even need it to tell me anything. Links are all that is relevant. Google Analytics on the Web does something similar. You can ask questions in the search box and it takes you to a relevant page.

“Can I get refund on my flight 2 hours in advance?”

“Here is a link to refund policies w.r.t time before flight”

_thisdot··on The day I canceled my Spotify subscription
Can very well relate to being annoyed with Spotify being an all-encompassing audio platform. I guess there is a market to that. YouTube Music is also bringing podcasts to their app.

But for someone who actually consumed a lot of audio content, that’s a terrible idea. If they had separate apps for these and showed hints to get you to download others, it’d feel way more organised.

I’ve completely moved to Apple Music for my music needs. The search is horrible and the suggestions are okay at best. But the UX and the audio quality is amazing.

I’ve also adapted to searching and listening to Albums instead of searching for one track and letting the platform decide what I listen to for the rest of the day.

Completely unrelated. But what Apple Music does with popular Album Arts is also incredible. I don’t have a problem with existing still image album arts. But there’s a real chance that animated album arts are the future

_thisdot··on UI = f(statesⁿ)
> Loading - A fetch is happening

Loading/Fetching can have multiple states. Some I can think of are:

1. Fetching data when there is no data 2. Fetching data to replace the data, but the data on the screen is not invalid 3. Fetching data to append to the existing data

All these warrant different states imo. I have some screenshots on Loading/Fetching here: https://rahulkrrrishna.xyz/notes/2024/01/01/loading-vs-fetch...

I like what `react-query` does. They toggle `isLoading` to true when the data is invalid/nonexistent. All subsequent fetches toggle a different state called `isFetching`

_thisdot··on Every default macOS wallpaper
Always loved the default wallpapers on Ubuntu too. I still have some old Ubuntu default wallpapers on my Mac!
_thisdot··on Nokia made too many phones
Yeah, but from a software perspective, it's just 2-3 form factors to support (Square Screen, Notch, Cutout). Even those are very well defined that those developing software for it doesn't have to bother with it at all. But you're right, the fact that a red iPhone 15 128 GB is one of the over 100 combinations available is wild. It seems like a smaller pool
_thisdot··on Browsers Are Weird
I have to say I love Arc. Simply because it takes existing OS UI/UX paradigms like Tab/Window switching, Spaces, etc. to browser. This is imo long overdue since the time we started using more webapps than websites.
_thisdot··on Car ownership in the US is becoming more expensive
It's amazing how car prices vary around the world with taxation. Especially taking into account the purchasing power parity. The cheapest cars in US are sold as entry-level luxury cars in a place like India. The entry level cars in India are deemed to cheap to be even considered selling in the US.

For instance, a Hyundai Venue costs $20k in the US. Taking into account the PPP, an Indian has to spend nearly $80k to own the same car.

Same logic applies for phones. Your $1000 iPhone cost me nearly $4000 (again, not currency conversion but PPP).

Not everything is too bad though. App prices, books, etc are usually adjusted for PPP. Spotify Premium costs us $2/month. Books that cost $400 in the US usually cost us $5-$20.

If you use macOS + iPhone, a Shorcuts based approach using Numbers is simple and powerful enough for your budgeting needs.

Shortcuts being the simplest way to add a row on to the budget sheet (i.e transaction) from iPhone homescreen or macOS Spotlight.

I wrote a small tutorial here: https://rahulkrrrishna.xyz/notes/2023/11/18/simple-budgeting...

_thisdot··on DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching
I doubt there's any Android exclusive feature to apps developed by Google. Sometimes feels like they even prioritise iOS over Android.
_thisdot··on Welcome to the ad-free internet
Much worse with Indian Railways. The website is riddled with ads. And if you need to book an emergency ticket, the portal opens 10AM for everyone in India. Obviously the traffic gets too much. I keep the network tab open and its painful to see requests for ads hogging up the resources when you're trying to book an emergency ticket in a race against the nation.

Booking one ticket involves solving 2 captchas. They even tried to involve advertising into these captchas. You had to type out some specific detail from the ad to get past it.

Don’t we? I could be wrong but my understanding is that the glymphatic system works very well during sleep. Basically excretory process of the central nervous system
_thisdot··on Is technology harming our brains?
I’m interested in learning how this is affecting sports. Couple of years ago, I remember reading an article that mentioned some EPL players underperforming because they stayed up to play Fortnite

I’ve heard stories of cricketers in the 80s getting hammered drunk in the nights during test matches yet nursing their hangover and bowling 100s of deliveries the day after

But technology is a seemingly harmless and way more accessible vice. It’s much easier to lose track of time on TikTok on your bed I’d say

_thisdot··on Brain Study Suggests Traumatic Memories Are Processed as Present Experience
Why We Sleep by Matt Walker goes into a similar topic. Paraphrased in hacker language by me, the gist is that the brain’s “cache” holds memories alongside the emotions. Whereas the “hard disk” part of the brain doesn’t hold on to emotions. The process of moving stuff from “cache” to “hard disk” happens during the dreaming/REM phase. Which is inhibited if you’re

1. Having nightmares that wake you up 2. Using sleeping pills 3. Using Alcohol to sleep

I’ve found that dreaming about the trauma/loss can soften the emotions over time

_thisdot··on As Democrats push to ban caste discrimination, some Indian Americans object
It’s weird. India has a problem of casteism, colourism and classism.

What you’re describing is probably a mix of casteism + colourism.

There is no strict correlation between skin colour and caste. The current Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fair skinned and from a lower caste while a cricketer like Hardik Pandya who is darker skinned is from an upper caste.

_thisdot··on As Democrats push to ban caste discrimination, some Indian Americans object
How so? Sorry I’m not as aware of race or racism as much I am of caste and casteism.
_thisdot··on As Democrats push to ban caste discrimination, some Indian Americans object
What’s funny is that you can change your religion. But you still can’t change your caste!

It’s even more interesting how norms and customs predate even caste. For instance, missionaries came to India and offered a better status within Christianity to Hindus from lower caste. This led to some caste based discrimination against Indian Christians. Now, Pakistan as a country doesn’t really have caste system being a Muslim country. But there are restaurants in Pakistan where Christians are still not allowed to eat in the same plate regular customers eat!

_thisdot··on As Democrats push to ban caste discrimination, some Indian Americans object
True that around 60% of the world population lives in Asia. I’d say “Asian” is more a geographic classification rather than race. Asia is huge and contains multiple races within.

Even smaller continents like North America or even Australia/Oceania has multiple races within them

_thisdot··on As Democrats push to ban caste discrimination, some Indian Americans object
Your race could be a factor in a medical diagnosis. Whereas your caste is completely irrelevant

> According to geneticist David Reich, "while race may be a social construct, differences in genetic ancestry that happen to correlate to many of today's racial constructs are real."
