_red··on Judge’s order requiring hospital to give Covid patient ivermectin
In many many countries Ivermectin is sold OTC in your neighborhood pharmacy alongside the aspirin, decongestants, etc.
_red··on Ohio judge orders hospital to treat Covid patient with horse medicine Ivermectin
"horse medicine"?

You mean the medicine that has been used on humans for 40 years and then repurposed for animals? You mean the medicine on WHO list of essential medications to alleviate human suffering?

_red··on Samsung seemingly caught swapping components in its 970 Evo Plus SSDs
I work in hardware design. Almost all ICs are very very limited supply. In our own case we had to move from 512K MCU to 256K simply because lead times are now until Dec 2022 on the 512K version.

I'm really surprised this hasn't bubbled-up to normies yet. I suspect this Christmas is going to be a shocker.

_red··on Samsung seemingly caught swapping components in its 970 Evo Plus SSDs
Hey Ars, there is a global chip shortage right now. I doubt Samsung is doing this to screw over their customers, rather its either this or nothing.

I know Ars knows this because they allude to in bottom of article. Click-baity.

_red··on Ivermectin: CDC Health Advisory [pdf]
An advisory saying "there's no proof it works and many people are being harmed". They are "signaling" their position and putting doctors who disagree on notice that they are acting against official advisories.

They = The public-private partnership (NIH/CDC/Pfizer/Moderna/JNJ etc) that grants themselves monopoly license AND total legal immunity. Must be nice.

_red··on Ivermectin: CDC Health Advisory [pdf]
Japan's health minister says otherwise.

They are truly desperate to prevent any alternative treatments available, no matter how modestly successful, otherwise it invalidates their EUA.

This private-public partnership (where NIH gets a royalty on vaccine tech) is an abomination.

_red··on Ansible Techniques I Wish I’d Known Earlier
>bash and python

Neither of those of idempotent.

It seems likely you are coming at this from the perspective of "when I find an ansible playbook on github its hard to follow whats going on".

There is a certain truth to that, but much of its complexity is probably related to said playbook developers trying to abstract away specifics and create a playbook that works on a variety of distributions / configuration options.

Ansible can be as simple as a single file that proceeds sequentially like a bash script.

_red··on Coinbase customers up in arms after hackers drain crypto wallets
>sim swap + phishing

nothing really specific to Coinbase.

_red··on Is Covid-19 making us irrational?
>punitive hospital policies

Why not also put fat people + diabetics at lower priority? Why is someone killing themselves by being 350lbs and having high-fructose corn syrup blood somehow more forgivable than someone waiting for FDA approval?

_red··on Afghan president flees the country as Taliban move on Kabul
Likely Gen. Mark Milley (Joint Chief of Staff) and/or Sec of Defense Lloyd Austin will probably lose their jobs over this.

Maybe focusing on preaching about "White Fragility" wasn't the best use of their time.

_red··on The uncanny absence of nihilism
>His entire corpus basically deals with how to escape nihilism

You must admit there is some sort of grand comedy in this: Nietzsche's one 'novel', "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" entire plot line is about a man who tries to warn society of the evils of nihilism and instead of being scared-off by it, all the people he warns fall in love with the idea (ie. willing trade their dangerous freedom to gain safety).

Its a deeply ironic that the current pedestrian understanding of him is that he advocated "atheism and nihilism". You almost couldn't make it up.

_red··on Delta variant renders herd immunity from Covid ‘mythical’
You mean this cornavirus is like all other cornaviruses!?

Hopefully someone invents an Immune-System-As-A-Service we can all subscribe to!

_red··on 30 years on from introducing the Web to the World
>our campus NeXTs, this new "World Wide Web" thing

Similar story. My lab had 2 NeXT cubes (the monochrome version) and the first time I saw a graphical browser was eye-opening. I had only experienced telnet and gopher before that...

I think this was probably '92-93 - like 3 years before Windows 95 even existed. This experience is what pushed me headlong into the nascent Linux, as the idea of going from NeXT to Windows 95 was like moving from a Ferrari to a tricycle. Linux was no Ferrari but it was at least a pickup truck....

_red··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
>So in your scenario, you'd have to save the photo received from the unknown number to get flagged.

Whew! I was worried there for a minute. Maybe for extra safety I could say "SIRI I DISAVOW OF THIS MESSAGE!"??

_red··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
>don’t use iMessage

1. Send someone you hate a message with cartoon making fun of tyrant-president.

2. That person is now on a list.

Its swatting-as-a-service.

_red··on Apple's plan to “think different” about encryption opens a backdoor to your life
Yes, my history was Linux 95-04, Mac 04-15, and now back to Linux from 2015 onwards.

Its been clear Tim Cook was going to slowly harm the brand. He was a wonderful COO under a visionary CEO-type, but he holds no particular "Tech Originalist" vision. He's happy to be part of the BigTech aristocracy, and probably feels really at home in the powers it affords him.

Anyone who believes this is "just about the children" is naive. His chinese partners will use this to crack down on "Winnie the Poo" cartoons and the like...before long questioning any Big Pharma product will result in being flagged. Give it 5 years at max.

_red··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
Why then do you need the mask and 3rd shot?
_red··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
>Just get your shot instead of playing armchair epidemiologist.

I've already had covid in 2020 and recently had another antibody test which still showed a strong response...

_red··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
>newer variants

Against the original Alpha perhaps. However Delta effectiveness is nowhere near 90%...this is precisely the reason for the push for boosters.

_red··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
Not exactly. Natural immunity is more durable and more complete. Vaccines are often "leaky", offering only partial protection against very specific markers. Whereas NI is more comprehensive and long-lasting.

"Leaky vaccines" result in catastrophic situations like Marek's disease.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marek's_disease

_red··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
High vaccination rates will only exert selection pressure on the virus causing new mutation strains to become dominant.

How is this not understood?

Vaccines should only be used for targeted at-risk population. Everyone else should strive for natural immunity.

_red··on The global threat from plastic pollution
Phthalate's are "plasticizers" - chemicals added to make plastics durable, flexible, transparent (ie. like every single water bottle).

Its been increasingly shown that "Phthalates act by mimicking the female hormone estrogen, which in turn inhibits production of the male hormone testosterone. As such, phthalates are considered to be endocrine disruptors" [1]

In fact, Phthalates are one of the candidates to explain the significant drop in male sperm production [2].

The point here is its possible that the effects of plastics are much more significant than anyone realizes...how much of the LGBT / gender identity issues could be related to environmental toxins?

_red··on First Look: macOS Monterey Public Beta
>-mid 2000s might just have been a fortuitous accident, not somethgin Apple ever courted.

yea, I think you are probably right. I was a linux user from 95-05 then switched to mac from 05-13 now back to linux. I'm well aware of the "this is the year of the linux desktop" joke, but honestly over past 4-5 years I think linux has reached the point that its fairly painless for 95% of common desktop usecases.

_red··on ‘Great Resignation’ gains steam as return-to-work plans take effect
Well...FANG products have largely reached the point in development where new features are incremental and not closely tied to growth or churn in a meaningful way.

Not being dismissive, simply pointing out...what fundamental leverage does a developer have against inelastic customer demand? Are customer going to stop using FANG products because advertising feature 3.2.97 isn't added this quarter?

_red··on Renewed questions about the virus, and hard-to-face answers
>But the reality at the time was bottom-up and we should not forget that.

Its a good point, but that ignores that co-opting "useful tragedies" are how authoritarian fanatics grasp power.

There is no reason why it can't be both: A bottom-up response that has morphed into a dystopian power grab.

_red··on Mobile NixOS
>dual-root-type setup where they update the inactive root, boot into it,

Fedora-IoT effectively does this with rpm-ostree + greenboot.

Greenboot specifies a series of directories under /etc that organizes your custom scripts (scripts that must not fail, scripts that may fail, scripts to run on success, scripts to run after previous failed, etc) then it marks your current ostree as either being active or auto-rollsback into previous.

_red··on Facebook suspends former U.S. president Donald Trump's accounts for 2 years
Its interesting to watch things self-destruct in real-time. As is often the case, the companies involved almost act on auto-pilot seemingly compelled to keep digging their own grave.
_red··on Leopold NIH FOIA Anthony Fauci Emails – DocumentCloud
I wonder what BigTechs excuse is going to be now that 'gain of function research' is being uncovered?

Its painful to realize the web has turned into a giant propaganda network.

At least their undocumented warehouse workers can salve their injuries with 100% legal biden-bud.
