_nickwhite··on Vizio TVs are now showing banner ads over live TV
I have a couple of cheap, super huge Walmart black friday-type budget TVs in my house (including Visio). I would never hook these up directly to the Internet, and use a set-top device (Xbox, Roku, AppleTV, iPad, etc.) Never had a negative experience in the last at least 10 TVs I’ve bought. I realize doing it this way adds cost, but I’ve never wanted the lackluster experience these cheap Android-based experiences offer.
_nickwhite··on Why Postfix is called Postfix and IBM secure mailer
How many greybeards here remember the O'reilly Sendmail bat book[1]? I built an ISP off of deciphering cryptic sendmail.cf parameters from it. This is what the "fix" in Postfix aims to "fix".

(Although the Postfix config files are no walk in the park either.)

_nickwhite··on GE won’t let me use convection roast on my new oven without connecting to WiFi
You could also do this with an iPhone hotspot- although the connected device _will_ have Internet access. Not sure if that's a problem for an oven or not.
_nickwhite··on Mojang to Require a Microsoft Account to Play Minecraft
Top 10 Best Selling Video Games of All Time:

10) Red Dead Redemption II (43M)

09) Wii Fit (43.8M)

08) Pokémon Red & Blue (47.5M)

07) Mario Kart 8 (51.8M)

06) Super Mario Bros. (58M)

05) PUBG: Battlegrounds (75M)

04) Wii Sports (82.9M)

03) Tetris (100M)

02) Grand Theft Auto V (160M)

01) Minecraft (238M)

My theory on Minecraft is that because it's java-based and ultra portable, most people have bought it lots of different platforms. I know that I have personally bought it on 7 different systems for myself and for my kids over the years.

_nickwhite··on Cloudflare to acquire Area 1 Security for $162M
This now puts a HUGE target on ProofPoint. My guess: Akamai buys them in the next 12 months.
_nickwhite··on Some folks asked how our Super Bowl ad came to be, here is the quick back story
This is great for the ad itself, but I want hear what happened directly after they ran it. The site went down for maybe 10-15 minutes and then came right back up. Probably a great war story from the depths of cloud engineering and devops.
_nickwhite··on Windows 11 Pro will soon require a Microsoft Account during initial setup
This news about Windows 11 Pro "requiring" a Microsoft Account is a bit of sensationalism. You can still bypass it and create a local account if you know what you're doing, as has been the case for several years with Windows 10. Here is how:

When you see the “Let’s Connect You To A Network” page, hit “Shift” and “F10” simultaneously. This will bring up the Command Prompt to which you type the command: taskkill /F /IM oobenetworkconnectionflow.exe

When Windows 11 setup detects networking is not possible, it will let you create the local account as always.

_nickwhite··on 25 Gbit/s internet as a normal customer
It would be great to see ISPs in the USA, even rural or municipal ISPs begin offering this.

The biggest issue I see with doing this (for residential users) is the fiber handoff. For 25Gbit, the very minimum is going to be a SFP28 module with an LC connector. The linked Init7 article is a bit light on details, but consumer grade hardware is not even close to that that in 2022. (SFP Ports OR the packet processing power to move that much traffic!)

Maybe the OTO Init7 installs on the house breaks it out into multiple 1Gbit or 10Gbit links to be more compatible? Even then, in the USA, basic SFP+ 10Gbit fiber, (inside the house) is rare in a residential setting. (Most fiber-based ISPs in the USA provide a 1Gbit copper uplink inside the house.)

_nickwhite··on Ask HN: Why is MS Teams so slow, do devs test Teams on less powerful machines?
I’m ordering a grip of employee laptops to refresh our fleet and expand some departments. Because Teams is such a dog, my #1 requirement is 16GB RAM. Maybe Microsoft _wants_ Teams to be piggy to drive hardware sales?

On another note I think Teams is actually an Electron app? I do think it runs better on my Intel MBP than my new Surface Laptop. But it’s still pretty buggy for such a high profile app.

_nickwhite··on Who is squatting IPv4 addresses?
This. I have a few /24s and only actually use maybe 25 active IP addresses. If I want to exist in global BGP tables, it's the smallest block I can use for my ASN (and not be filtered out). I think in 2022, the rise of SDWAN, CDNs, and, Zero-Trust reverse proxy services, it's not actually relevant to roll your own BGP, unless you're a big player, or if you just want to fly solo on the Internet.
_nickwhite··on Ask HN: Has Amazon been hounding you?
They’re not really “losing” staff as those staff members are just moving somewhere else for a 30% pay raise. For FAANG companies, “The Great Resignation” is more like “The Great Reshuffle”.
_nickwhite··on Akamai to Acquire Linode
As a long time Linode user, I hung in there through a lot of service issues and growing pains. Linode has always been just one of a handful of providers I have, and I figured at _some_ point, all of these issues will result in a solid platform. Well, over the last couple years, Linode HAS achieved this, and is now one of my most reliable platforms.

I also use Prolexic DDoS service from Akamai, which was a standalone company until 2014. Akamai bought them, and the service actually vastly improved, so let's hope that Linode + Akamai's size and buying power will result in something even better.

_nickwhite··on How do I check if our home network is compromised?
Use a router with pfSense or OPNSense so you can see egress traffic & know what is flowing outbound from your network. Visibility into this traffic is really the only way to know for sure what is going on.
_nickwhite··on COVIDtests.gov – Free at-home Covid-19 tests
"Ordering begins January 19."

I see they have this behind Akamai. That's a good thing because my first thought was "Man, I hope they have this site behind a good load balancer!"

_nickwhite··on Windows 2000 Modernization Guide
Unfortunately, using Windows Server as a gaming computer is highly frustrating, and rarely works long-term. Biggest issue is driver compatibility (especially video drivers). Direct X used to be an issue, but I think it actually runs fine now in Server 2019. A much better solution in today's world would be to just run Linux. Steam now has >80% of the Top-100 Windows games running on Linux.
_nickwhite··on Windows 2000 Modernization Guide
Instead of "Making Windows 2000 Usable in 2021" I'd like to see something more along the lines of "Making Windows 11 Usable in 2021". Past attempts at doing this (oftentimes) produced shady utilities (or illegal ISOs) that would hack out "essential" Windows components. If done right, open-source, developed out in the open, I could see this being a hugely successful endeavor. Imagine being able to use a modern Windows system (officially) that had no bloatware or the things we hate about modern Windows. (yes, I know I'm almost describing Linux and MacOS here)

To pull this off, I see a utility (kind of like Chocolatey) with modules that can be run to disable certain annoyances- and changes that can always be fully reverted if necessary. Create some global modules such as "gaming-only" that removes all the bloat needed except for gaming.

_nickwhite··on Tell HN: Azure is having a major outage
At least they acknowledge it:

https://portal.office.com/servicestatus

_nickwhite··on I started a paper website business
I love the ending. Seriously, if you're a TLDR; person and just here for the comments, go read the article (it's short) and come back.
_nickwhite··on No Easter Eggs in Curl
There are 2 types of crotchety old men:

1) This one yells "get off my lawn!". 2) This one yells "get off my lawn!" and proceeds to explain why he doesn't like kids walking through his grass, and gives the complete history of him yelling at kids and then goes into detail why staying off his lawn is best for everybody.

The author of curl is the latter. It would take much less time and effort to just write something fun into it, AND document it. Good grief, life is short, software development should be fun, even while remaining professional.

_nickwhite··on Keep a Log
I used to keep a huge Notepad .txt file of a ton of company knowledge, gotchas, offhand documentation, and any kind of tidbit that I might need later. A few years ago, I migrated all of this to OneNote with detailed, formatted notebooks for every broad subject I could categorize. I recently shared my OneNote notebook with guys relatively new to my team, and I found them using it all_the_time. So not only is the "Knowledge Log" good for you, it can also be a useful tool to help others on your team.
_nickwhite··on I resigned from Twitter
You graduated and had to get a job?
_nickwhite··on GoDaddy Security Breach
Us greybeards have been around long enough to experience several of these bad/evil domain registrars. One common path I see has been:

Network Solutions -> GoDaddy -> Namecheap -> Google Domains OR CloudFlare Domains

Seriously, if anyone is still using Netsol or Godaddy, there are much better alternatives, and it's very easy to make the transition- I've helped a good handful of friends.

_nickwhite··on Error 404 (Not Found)
1:10PM - either it has resolved itself, or a regional issue, but I'm not seeing anything being down from the East coast USA.
_nickwhite··on Show HN: Windows 2000 on Docker
What a cool project. Expose that port 3389 (RDP) to the internet & see how long before it gets cryptolocked.
_nickwhite··on Incident Affecting Google Cloud Infrastructure Components
“Summary: We are experiencing Networking issues”

That’s the full details right there folks, no other technical explanation.

_nickwhite··on We saved millions in SSD costs by upgrading our filesystem
AWS is more often than not a better solution than colo when factoring in the on-site engineers, techs, and operational complexity costs a company will pay to monitor and respond to hardware-related events. One could build out a datacenter management team with on-call engineers, or, they could pay AWS to handle all that, and focus on innovation and products that make their company unique and (hopefully) profitable. AWS makes a lot of sense for companies that wish to inoculate themselves from the hardware layer, and it would probably take a company many magnitudes larger than Heap to realize any real benefits from self-hosting at a colo. This isn't even considering the fact that uptime matters, and you'll need more than 1 colo to really do it right.

I say this as someone who built, manages and operates datacenters and colo spaces.

_nickwhite··on The “Ultimate” ThinkPad (2020)
This is a cool “tinkering” project, but my “ultimate” ThinkPad would rarely see the BIOS boot screen, and sleep/suspend/wake would actually work properly.
_nickwhite··on An Update on Our Outage
Twins + adoption actually. The current picture is 8, 9, 9, 16, 16. Figure that one out. :)
_nickwhite··on An Update on Our Outage
My 3 youngest kids, aged 9, 9, and 8 told me Roblix were having an extended outage, world wide. Good job to the team getting everything back up. Been there, done that. #hugops
_nickwhite··on Closing email with “thanks” gets the most replies
“Thanks” has become such a disingenuous generic ending on e-mails that I’ve stopped using it altogether. And it hasn’t seemed to reduce my replies or cause people to think I’m “not nice.” I end every single e-mail with “-NW” and if I want to say “thanks” I do it in a real way in the body of the message.
