_gfrc··on Discussions with Apple regarding license agreement
Exactly. Maybe they figured that they already hired the key personnel, so there was no need to buy the whole company any longer.
_gfrc··on Discussions with Apple regarding license agreement
This doesn't come very surprising to me, as Apple has been in talks to acquire Imagination Technologies but has decided not to: https://arstechnica.com/apple/2016/03/apple-acquire-imaginat...

I don't know the reason, but I suppose it is the same reason why they decided to build their own gpu independently. Apple also already own(s/ed?) a part of Imagination Technologies.

_gfrc··on In Berlin, a Grass-Roots Fight Against Gentrification as Rents Soar
I would love to see some actual numbers on this, but here is another perspective on this:

A) Students educated in Berlin are far more likely to move to other cities, since there are e.g. no jobs in production. How many engineers working at Daimler did study in Berlin (i.e. costing the city money, without contributing by paying taxes)?

B) A lot of large companies are currently opening offices in Berlin. They are gladly using the services of the city, as are their well-payed employees, effectively raising the rent. However, they will still pay taxes at their headquarters in a different city.

As I said, I have no numbers on this, but the situation is way to complex to just say that Berlin is wasting tax money. It certainly is - in a lot of areas - but so are others states.

Instead of being pissed that Berlin is trying to improve the situation and keep the city affordable for everybody, maybe we should start asking how we can achieve the same in other sought after locations as well.

_gfrc··on Lyft Is Said to Seek New Funding as Its Rival Uber Stumbles
It's around 60€ if you get on a yearly plan. Compared to other cities Berlin is indeed a bit pricy, but the zones A+B are really large.
_gfrc··on Facebook Doesn’t Tell Users Everything It Really Knows About Them
So how do I prevent my friends from uploading my phone number when they share their contacts? What do I do when they take pictures at a party and upload them? Should I have to jump out of view every time somebody takes a phone out of their pocket? Give only "trusted people" my phone number?
_gfrc··on A French Grocery Chain Is Trolling Amazon Go
This service is actually 10 years old.

But you are right, though - I'm working in this space and Amazon Go definitely helped to shake up some people. Let's see if we can turn this into action.

_gfrc··on Amazon Go
That sounds about right. Depending on the store, though, the cashier will handle a lot more articles. E.g. at Aldi, a cashier is expected to process at least 3k articles per hour.

The big problem is: Most people are not willing to pay for that :) Depending on the product, 1-2 cents might be your whole margin.

_gfrc··on Amazon Go
RFID tags are still to expensive in the supermarket context. The margins are usually razor thin (at least in Germany) and the products are quite cheap. Even when buying RFID tags in bulk they are too expensive.
_gfrc··on Snapchat will sell its new video-capturing glasses via vending machines
This seems to be a great way do distribute them. Moving the vending machines leads to a fun hunt and if they don't sell Snap haven't tied up a lot of stock.
_gfrc··on Apple CEO Tim Cook Calls for Unity in Memo to Staff Following Trump Victory
This is what he does. He tells them to move forward and focus on the company's mission.
_gfrc··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
I'm not sure if we did, but we didn't forget that they exist. We focussed so much on publishing facts (and rants) on social media, instead of talking to the people directly.

There are zero Trump supporters on my timeline, everybody is shocked and horrified. I would bet that there are people out there who have a diametrically opposed timeline with zero HC supporters. We need to get those people together instead of further alienating and separating them by "better", more personalised and targeted algorithms.

_gfrc··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
This is one of the issues that the social media bubble creates.

We don't reach people that are different, neither do their voices reach us. We are all so connected nowadays and yet so separated.

I can highly recommend Hinton's course on Coursera - https://www.coursera.org/learn/neural-networks

It starts on October 31st, I took it a while ago and learned a lot. The course is gravitating towards the theoretical end of the spectrum. If you want something thats a bit easier to get into, I can recommend the course by Hugo Larochelle:

This is probably due to your ad blocker. Same here. The page doesn't work if you disable the tracking. After disabling Focus it's working.
_gfrc··on Berlin’s Startup Hub Wants to Prove It’s More Than Just a Scene
I'm recruiting at one of Germany's largest companies. I didn't use the standard format when applying and nobody cared, neither do I care when I see an application.

The latest person I hired didn't follow any standard at all :)

But to be honest - best way to get hired is still through your network.

Great to see progress. Even though I would prefer if resumable uploads were part of the browser.

_gfrc··on New Cities
Anecdata as a counter example: Germany has a really high density of stores (I am living in Berlin and have ~10 supermarkets within 1km distance) and is also known for its extremely cheap groceries. The margins of the supermarket chains are razor thin, but the high density of stores is one of the reasons why you don't need a car at all in bigger German cities - in addition to good public transport.

This article is missing an important point:

"Another big problem with banner ads in the past was that they weren’t targeted at all until relatively recently."

I use adblockers BECAUSE you are targeting me. In order to target me, you need to track me as good as you can and you need to get as much information about me as possible. That is my only reason why I use adblock and disable all kind of social sharing buttons as well.

I'm totally fine with ads that fit the content of the website. There are a couple of forums I've whitelisted that use simple images as ads. No javascript, just a plain image and a link that matches the content of the forum.

_gfrc··on Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Takes $1B Position in Apple
ETF still have different replication strategies. To the customer they guarantee to track the index, however they might buy completely unrelated stocks or options to achieve this. The replication strategy should be an important factor when buying an ETF.

Blue Byte did something along the lines of your suggestion with the copyright protection of Settlers III. When the game detected that the DRM was broken, iron smelters would only produce pigs instead of iron.

_gfrc··on iPhone SE
If the battery lasts 1.5 days, people have to start charging their phones in the middle of the day - which is usually a bad time and a huge inconvenience. If you have to charge it every day, you don't notice it, if the battery runs out in your lunch break, you will curse Apple for the bad battery life.

In contrast, if you charge your phone daily anyway, you don't gain anything by 0.5 days of added battery life.

_gfrc··on An End to Parking?
Random data point: There were 342 cars registered per 1000 citizens in Berlin in 2014 [0]. Same in other (large) cities I have lived in in Europe.

Typically, using the public transport in Berlin will be much quicker than taking the car.

_gfrc··on Berlin social housing winning the residential race
From a law perspective the situation is very similar. Tenants can't be evicted easily. In areas of high demand rents are (mostly) indexed as well.

Compared to Hamburg, Munich and Dusseldorf Berlin is still rather cheap. I have apartments both in Hamburg and Berlin and pay roughly ~1.5 as much per square meter in Hamburg, though the one in Berlin is in a much better location.

_gfrc··on Handling App Transport Security in iOS 9
Well, they are asking to disable security completely. It's not like their asking to be added to a whitelist - which is probably not feasible.

_gfrc··on At-home kit to track metabolism to measure health status
Though you can take only one sample per week (I would prefer a daily basis), it could be quite interesting to see how your lifestyle influences your metabolism. But I guess you would have to keep your lifestyle consistent for at least a week, otherwise the results are not really meaningful.

Sometimes common sense has to be taught. Of course they do know how percentages, probabilities and so on work. But they fail to do so when it comes to money. I actually doubt that this is (in most cases) due to greed. Many people just don't have a feeling for the relation between risk and promised reward.
