_aleph2c_··on Let the ultra-rich and influential skip the line for Covid-19 vaccines?
It could be a marketing campaign paid for by the "greedy rich" to improve the health of the system.

American's love celebrities, so if celebrities pay for access, the common American will want what is temporarily denied from them.

_aleph2c_··on The Timing of Evolutionary Transitions Suggests Intelligent Life Is Rare
Intelligent life could evolve frequently, even within their model, if you consider panspermia (life transmission via rocks between star systems). The infrequent evolutionary events just have to happen once, then get spread all over the place, in the bodies of something like an alien-Tardigrade. Moreover, life could exist off planet. Here is a presentation by Freeman Dyson talking about searching for life in the Kuiper belt (where all the real estate is):

_aleph2c_··on After losing my savings as an indie hacker, I can't do it anymore. I quit.
The thing that you can't lose is that spiritual drive that is the engine of your venture. With out it, all is lost, even your mental health. It's hard to predict how life will be when your gamble starts coming up short. It's hard to keep focus when your dealing with your girlfriend's anxiety, or when your running out of money without any backup plan. I have felt the author's pain, but from the pain comes a set of lessons you can't understand from reading a book. I hope that after he picks up his pieces he eventually executes again with a new game plan: to manage his downside, to have customer's chomping at the bit, to find proper financial backing, to establish a team of fellow believers, to sell into a well established network through a partner, or whatever lessons he has learned.

_aleph2c_··on RIAA Takedowns Backfire as Pirated MP3s Now Surface on GitHub
Microsoft is playing a different game than YouTube/Google.

Microsoft bought Github for 7.5 billion dollars. Github is a website wrapping a git-server; you know Microsoft could have built their own for a lot less money. The didn't buy the technology, they bought a network, its data and a brand. They are trying to improve their reputation with the open source community. It's really hard to measure such a thing, but this RIAA take down reduced developer trust. If Microsoft chose to fight a legal battle, win or lose they would win on their branding front. They would signal that they are defending open source.

_aleph2c_··on US govt ups minimum H-1B tech salaries to $208,000 a year
I was planning on going down to the states (I'm living in BC Canada), the salaries down there are more than 2x what you can get here. It doesn't look like I'll be able to do that now. With this said, this move by your current administration makes a lot of sense to me, there is an opportunity to grow the American middle class around knowledge work. The United States has the best training institutions and capital structures in the world. They have a healthy demographic profile (they are maintaining their population), there is no reason for them to spoil their own job market with injections of foreign labour. I see no reason for them not to train and hire their own citizens.
_aleph2c_··on She's Just Like Me
This reminds me of "Mr. & Mrs. Everywhere" from the book "Stands on Zanzibar" written by John Brunner in 1968.
_aleph2c_··on The Russian vaccine for Covid-19
I would take it if it was available to me. The risk of a side effect seems much lower than the risk of catching or spreading the disease to others.

_aleph2c_··on The Harm of Studying Abroad
If what he says is true, it also means that the creative thinking at the graduate level of many American STEM degrees has been limited. My friends who are professors in American Universities tell me that in a lot of their courses, there isn't an American student in their whole class; their classes are mostly Chinese. So if their whole group has gone through a hazing-education-process, conducted in a foreign language, they will have suffered the kind of spiritual harm described by the author. If they stay in the US to do their graduate work, chances are they won't be thinking out of the box.

From the presentation:

1. There was a 4-20 percent chance a bomber would be destroyed in an allied bombing run over Germany in WWII.

2. An American airman would have to fly 25 bombing runs before they could go home.

_aleph2c_··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
This could be an extinction level event for the right. They have managed to circumvent the conventional media by going directly to the masses. If social media is mediated by the highly educated, and typically left leaning staff; there will be no way for the right to send out there message. The left leaning staff think they are doing the right thing, but what they are doing will extinguish the oxygen to the other side.
_aleph2c_··on The Great Asshole Fallacy
I wish I had enough points to down vote your comment.
_aleph2c_··on How Apocalyptic Is Now?
When our immune system is over-fit to the wrong kind of thing, we call that an allergy. People who have been raised with animals or who have had to fight off parasites tend to have less allergies. I think this idea holds for our society; our societal immune system needs to be tested too, otherwise we attack ourselves (identity politics, the culture wars...) So I disagree with the author, I think we will be better off when this is done. We will go back to the bars and we will enjoy our lives more, we will think about our long term goals and make better efforts to get to them.
_aleph2c_··on Don't trust nice people in business
I think you can put more weight on "nice" being just nice if you are going to be working in a partnership with that person for a long time, and they have a reputation of working in longer term relationships. But if you are signing up for a short duration, by all means be skeptical.

_aleph2c_··on Python dicts are now ordered
This is an amazing contribution to the language. A mixture of speed and convenience, probably made by volunteers. As for people criticizing a change to what use to be a non-deterministic ordering of a dict iteration; I don't know what to say to them, other than, are you serious? There are people out there who are working for us, they work for free and they did some heavy lifting to give us this. They might read what you wrote and think, "Why bother? Maybe I should spend my weekends playing with my kids instead."
_aleph2c_··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
Predictions:

1. CIA becomes obsolete, they will not be able to keep their secrets and they have no asymmetric advantage in killing other country leaders while protecting their own leadership from being killed in retaliation. (mutually assured destruction on a small scale)

2. Garbage dump mining startups will have a capital hey-day (story about "bitcoin ladened trash-PC recovered" blows up in the headlines)

3. UFO stories become more and more prevalent in the news. Non-Newtonian aircraft presented by US space-force.

4. Quiet surveillance on the rise with sudden opportunities appearing for movement-leaders; security services disband-through-kindness rather than through cohesion.

5. Wealth becomes impossible to hide, oligarchs, corrupt politicians exposed through a series of leaks.

6. The internet is fragmented, but Elon Musk creates a network of networks which allows the American's to continue its colonization of all information systems.

7. Uni-gate, dept burdened millennials and post-millennials align politically and go after the universities/officials who have bankrupted their futures.

8. Meme-force established. Information cascades are monitored and foreign influencers are shut down or even forcibly stopped.

9. Google over-steps, internal anti-trust emails exposed, the search monopoly is broken and other search engines come online

10. Backlash against Chinese funded foreign nationals in western STEM programs.

11. First brain hack and thought probe occurs via a brain-to-computer interface mixed with an AI system.

12. Telepathy RFC introduced

13. Rene Girard's memetic theory gains in popularity as post-modernism continues to fall.

14. First massive state sponsored bank account attack wipes out hundreds of millions of electronic records; creating chaos in the western financial system. Crypto surges.

15. "Identity politics" based political arrests start to occur due to thought-crimes.

16. Small scale micro-voting systems innovate how small groups make decisions. (voting nerdom becomes a thing, democracy disrupted in a good way)

17. First asteroid mined

18. Mental health task-force (Chinese like system) established and funded to identify people who are competent enough to harm the whole (frequency of mass shootings reduced)

19. More political parties entirely bypass traditional (captured) media and talk directly to their base (Trump style political approach catches on)

20. Re-invention of the university system outside of the United States (Maybe from the African renaissance)

21. Factory farms are out-competed by lean and ethical agricultural systems. Ag-gag laws are unenforceable because drone surveillance become so inexpensive.

22. Mark Zuckerberg becomes president of the United States.

_aleph2c_··on We've Just Had the Best Decade in Human History
There is an interesting phenomenon happening here on hacker news.

Optimistic comments are being voted down by the moderators (who have a high enough ranking to do so). Yet, this article has been pushed to the top by regular members.

The messages within the down-voted comments aren't breaking any of the community rules. So the down-voting is happening because of a political disagreement. The moderators are intolerant of an opposing view and rather than engage in open debate; they instead wink the things they disagree with, out of the conversation entirely.

_aleph2c_··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
Peter Thiel would be proud of your business and dating approach Aaron (it's a "zero to one" approach). No doubt there will be a woman out there who sees the ad, and then joins your exclusive dating club. But my question is this? Can the women see the other women on your app, if not you should consider renaming your app to "myharem".
_aleph2c_··on Ask HN: What are people's main sources of articles these days?
I used to enjoy futurology until it was taken over by the eco-crowd: https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/ (I have been working in renewable energy since 2004 and have planted over a million trees, but I would like to get tech news without a political agenda)

lobsters: https://lobste.rs/ is pretty good for drilling down into a specific technology.
