Problem: bathtub analogy

Possible solution: theory of constraints

__derek__··on Is Seattle a 15-minute city? It depends on where you want to walk
Cool map. If you select Elementary schools and all of the amenities except Link stations, the map basically highlights Seattle's Urban Villages (plus a few extras).[1]

__derek__··on GitHub to lay off 10% and close all offices
Sentiments like this should probably temper the ChatGPT/Bing hype.
__derek__··on ‘The Battery’s Dead’: Burnout Looks Different in Autistic Adults
I don't see what's objectionable about that aside. The article's premise implies that "neurotypicals" cannot understand "autistic burnout" but the reverse is also necessarily true. This makes it impossible to compare the severity of each. I believe that the same is true for those with depression and those without, hence the meat of my comment.

Ha, these contracts are not with start-ups.
__derek__··on Drones are spying on the U.S. and The Pentagon acts like they’re UFOs (2021)
FWIW, China's neighbors in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines don't appear to share your characterization of the situation. Neither do Australia, India, or Indonesia.
__derek__··on ‘The Battery’s Dead’: Burnout Looks Different in Autistic Adults
Leaving aside the impossibility of comparing one person's burnout to another's ("autistic people [...] experience it on a whole different level"), the second paragraph also works for depression:

> While most people undergo periods of burnout — physical, cognitive and emotional depletion caused by intense, prolonged stress — [depressed] people, at some point in their lives, experience it on a whole different level. [Depressive] traits can amplify the conditions that lead to burnout, and burnout can cause these traits to worsen. They may become unable to speak or care for themselves, and struggle with short-term memory. This harms their ability to perform well at jobs, in school or at home.

Check out the recent book Danger Zone by Hal Brands. I do think there's a growing consensus that this belligerence is a near-term problem even if it's been slow to develop.
__derek__··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
The other stores' taking e-commerce share would be consistent with the spirit of the comment, IMO.

I agree on the third-party products/listings. I have to assume that Sam Walton is turning in is grave because it all seems like a perversion of old-school merchandising.

__derek__··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
That sounds like a frustrating experience. I don't shop at Walmart because Seattle is kind of a Walmart desert (whereas Amazon return drops are everywhere), but it always seems like there are comments promoting it in those threads.
__derek__··on Binance to suspend US dollar bank transfers
The 2008 financial crisis centered on public companies that were nominally heavily regulated. As long as Coinbase's liquidity depends on a synthetic safe asset rather than actual insured deposits, it's perfectly capable of having its own Lehman or Bear or Merrill moment.
__derek__··on The Four Horsemen of the Tech Recession
I chuckled when I saw the Twitter bio for the item in the lede. Yes, reporter person, you are in an echo chamber, and it means that you're probably failing at your job (charitably assuming that Insider has higher aspirations than serving as a tech gossip rag).
__derek__··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
AWS has a lot of pre-committed revenue[1]:

> For contracts with original terms that exceed one year, those commitments not yet recognized were $110.4 billion as of December 31, 2022. The weighted average remaining life of our long-term contracts is 3.7 years. However, the amount and timing of revenue recognition is largely driven by customer usage, which can extend beyond the original contractual term.

Even if new business stops, and that revenue extends beyond contracted terms, it should provide a nice cushion.

__derek__··on Amazon Q4 2022 Financials
Absolutely. Every HN thread about Amazon retail is littered with comments about giving up on shopping there and finding a better experience (e.g., less junk, cheaper prices, better selection) elsewhere. If anything, the growth of Amazon Ads has pushed e-commerce spend to Walmart, the actual leader in retail.
__derek__··on A novel PayPal scam
Imposing an up-front cost seems like a reasonable option.

> PayPal Invoicing has no set up or monthly fees. When a customer pays you online, you’re charged a fee based on the amount of the purchase. Fees vary by country or region.

__derek__··on Why Is Everyone So Boring?
> If UBI is made conditional on "good behavior" or "social score", it is going to further amplify the social "dark forest".

This is true. Personally, it's hard to imagine the public supporting a UBI scheme that extends to ex-convicts, let alone the imprisoned. Ditto undocumented immigrants.

__derek__··on Meta Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Results
To abuse the metaphor a bit, incinerators generate energy. It's entirely possible that Zuck and Co. have been capturing the energy produced by this one in order to help propel the company forward in the future.

> But I think that's actually the unlikely scenario.

Right, we take opposite sides of the probability here. My preference is just that they direct some of the output from that prodigious cash-generator towards shareholders in the meantime. You know, like Apple does.

__derek__··on Meta Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Results
Buying back another $40 billion in stock also helps. The narrative around metaverse costs was largely that they should return cash to shareholders rather than dumping so much of it into that incinerator. It looks like the board took that advice.

__derek__··on Snap Quarterly Results Q4 2022 [pdf]
> He should’ve taken the offer from Zuck and Meta stocks before the pandemic run up.

SNAP has outperformed FB/META basically every period since Q1 2018, though. If anything, the time to sell out was after the pandemic run-up, in Q3/Q4 2021: SNAP had gained ~365% since the beginning of 2020 versus ~85% for FB/META.

__derek__··on Ask HN: What is your retirement plan? After retirement, what?
Wouldn't a "quarter decade" be 2.5 years, making OP 64.5 years?
__derek__··on Ask HN: Do you have any experience asking to be down-leveled at $Corporate_Job?
No personal experience, but I've seen this happen before. Most recently, it was a senior-level TPM who switched to a mid-level SDE role, and who has since declined to pursue a promotion to senior. Assuming that you (a) are a good performer (because they'll be motivated to keep you around) and (b) have a good relationship with your manager (because they'll have to handle losing you as a senior IC), you should be able to discuss your options and, if it's possible to make the change in situ, hash out a transition plan.
__derek__··on Mark Zuckerberg doesn't like seeing 'managers managing managers'

Invert this: protect your assets before considering bankruptcy. As "the creator and sole developer" OP may not get any liability protection from their LLC.

__derek__··on The ER has become a sanctuary for society’s unmet needs
That actually plays into TFA: the police don't have anywhere to take kids in crisis, so they drop them at the Seattle Childrens Hospital ER.
__derek__··on The ER has become a sanctuary for society’s unmet needs
It's unfortunate that your comment is buried because it's actually on-topic, as opposed to all the complaints about ERs and urgent care centers. Churches would traditionally be a place to take children in crisis (as in TFA), not emergency rooms.
__derek__··on Ask HN: What career would you switch into if AI ate your profession?
IMO, AI-driven development will increase the need for security work:

The OWASP Top Ten are going to come back in a big way.
__derek__··on BuzzFeed says it will use AI to help create content, stock jumps 150%
That's exactly what came to my mind, too.
