__derek__··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
Gotcha. I thought maybe they were planning to skip GPT-5 or something.

That's actually a pretty low bar, FWIW. (rimshot) Law students spend a few months in bar prep to memorize a bunch of crap that doesn't even apply to their real jobs. Maybe the AI will encourage bar associations to finally ditch it, a development that gained some steam during the pandemic.[1]

Wait, why 6?
__derek__··on Amazon is closing its cashierless stores in NYC, San Francisco and Seattle
Sports venues, too. They have the Amazon version installed at Climate Pledge Arena and a few baseball stadiums, but I've seen something similar at a walk-up beer fridge during a Nets game at the Barclays Center.

__derek__··on Amazon is closing its cashierless stores in NYC, San Francisco and Seattle
How did it fail? They just announced that eight stores were permanently closed after having been closed indefinitely, one of which was inside of an Amazon office that shut down last year.[1] It looks like they still have 29 Go stores open nationwide.[2]

__derek__··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
Gotcha. You were a hobbyist before. That makes sense.

I hear you on the instruction. I used to teach climbing courses as a volunteer, and it was always nice watching people grow more confident.

__derek__··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
> I'm now an airline pilot

How did you make this move? I've day-dreamed about this, but curious to hear details from someone who did it.

* As in The Entertainment at the center of the novel, not the novel itself, which fails to wholly consume the reader in the same manner as The Entertainment despite being captivating enough for a book.

__derek__··on The Inverse Jim Cramer ETF
You replied to a post above about the inverse ETF, suggesting that that poster was cherry-picking dates. The entire point of the inverse ETF was to take advantage of the ARKK's unrealistic returns in the preceding year.

Just for kicks, though, here's ARKK versus VTI and cash since April 2020.[1]

__derek__··on The Inverse Jim Cramer ETF
Ideally, that should net out to an expensive market-neutral fund with 0% expected returns minus the management fees and transaction costs, the latter of which could be really high.
__derek__··on The Inverse Jim Cramer ETF
> Note: The time period was constrained by the available data for AXS Short Innovation Daily ETF (SARK) [Dec 2021 - Feb 2023].

Including monthly investment doesn't really help, either.[1]

__derek__··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
That makes sense. It fits with the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which connects Tacoma (urban economic hub) to the Olympic Peninsula (some small towns, mostly wilderness).
__derek__··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
Square wants more store credit. The more lock-in, the better.
__derek__··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
> I've never seen a toll bridge that had tolls in both directions.

Huh, I think I've only seen this once (the Tacoma Narrows Bridge). Other toll bridges I've driven have all had tolls in each direction, e.g., Ambassador and Blue Water Bridges to Canada, Lake Washington floating bridge. Maybe I need to start taking more bridges to nowhere!

__derek__··on Square to no longer return processing fees when buyers are issued a refund
Apparently merchants can avoid it with store credit:

> Additionally, we offer a number of resources and tools to assist sellers in accommodating this change. Our Return Policy Guide & Templates provide sellers with guidance on how to create a return policy that best suits their business, while Square’s free eGift Cards can serve as an option for providing store credit to buyers with no additional processing fees.

__derek__··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger
Interesting. I had the opposite experience after placing an early pre-order for the F-150 Lightning. The expected delivery date kept slipping back, the price kept increasing, and the salesman I was forced to interact with had no idea what was going on. They did refund quickly after I cancelled, though.
__derek__··on Apartment rents fall as new supply hits market
In Seattle, a converted apartment will generally have much lower build quality (e.g., wood walls rather than concrete), so it's not going to appeal to someone in the market for a purpose-built condo. The business of selling condos is also significantly less attractive to developers.[1]

[1]: https://kuow.org/stories/why-are-condos-in-seattle-so-rare-a...

__derek__··on Apartment rents fall as new supply hits market
Wouldn't that suggest that the development is lagging existing demand? Jersey City seems like a prime spot for spillover demand from Manhattan, so I'd probably expect that cycle to continue until it reaches parity with similar neighborhoods.
__derek__··on I quit infosec and I couldn't be happier
> an app for dominoes pizza

This is a nitpick, but customer-facing ordering and delivery technology arguably is the main product for Domino's Pizza. The food basically defines replacement level, but the tech differentiates the experience from other shops.

__derek__··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
Can you name a functioning example of design review, though? My experience with them is specific to Seattle, and the program absolutely does not work as your comment hopes.
__derek__··on Lawsuits Block Thousands of Seattle Homes, $39M for Affordable Housing
That's a contradiction in terms, AFAICT. I was excited to find this in the post:

> Meanwhile, a bill moving forward in the legislature introduced by Representative Amy Walen (D-48, Bellevue) would ban design review for housing projects statewide.

I have this bookmarked to contact my reps and senator to join as co-sponsors.[1]

__derek__··on To the Moon? Emojis can be financial advice, says judge
> why the emojis in question are financial advice

I'm behind on Money Stuff, so I had to go check his column. Unlike the confused headline, he doesn't say anything about "financial advice" because it's irrelevant here. The Twitter account's emoji usage was relevant to establishing that it was marketing securities by promising a return on investment.

__derek__··on Conventional wisdom as an anti-pattern
Right. They're razors, not commandments. Given a choice between two reasonable alternatives, it might be wise to pick the one that's {unrepetitive|simple|explicit|extensible|testable}.
__derek__··on Show HN: Collection of 2k+ Startup Incubators and Accelerators (global)
Thanks for updating.

I'm curious how you compiled the data. Perusing the Seattle-based entries, there are some whose URLs don't resolve, e.g., Pure Blue Water Innovation Nexus (probably defunct: http://pureblue.org/) and IntuitiveX (just needs SSL: https://intuitive-x.com/). This one doesn't appear to have an incubator or accelerator: Navigator CRE (https://www.navigatorcre.com/). Maybe the source dataset has some older entries that have gone stale.

> Are you saying I shouldn't have it behind an email-wall?

Yes. Readers can't see anything without signing up for a newsletter. The link you just provided would be much better.

__derek__··on Show HN: Collection of 2k+ Startup Incubators and Accelerators (global)
I clicked through because I thought this was interesting, got confused because there was no ability to sort or filter the list, and then realized that it's just a landing page to capture newsletter sign-ups. That appears to run afoul of the Show HN guidelines.[1]
