____mr____··on What Zig felt like, coming from Rust
> For example Jai and Odin both seem to really want you to write code which can throw away a "per-frame" arena periodically so they're not paying to track allocations in the arena because they're all thrown away at the same time

Given that both of these are intended for game development, wouldn't that make the most sense?

____mr____··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Ive heard of HPMoR specifically because this exact group has been discussed/entered my periphery before on multiple occasions, Aella goes viral on twitter every couple of weeks (the thing that most cemented her in my mind was the "what counts as rape" survey), and I remember seeing articles of the Zizians when one of the incidents happened. If you have been following the social/political aspects of the tech industry, most of these people should be familiar names.
____mr____··on Copyright does more harm than good and should be abolished
>And to the inevitable room temperature IQ DSA crowd, why would the AnCap government

>AnCap govenment

what?

____mr____··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Both of their legal teams utilized bots to drive online discussions[1][2]

Neither of these sources support this claim as none of them include any discussion on Amber Heard('s legal team) using bots?

____mr____··on GIMP Development Update
The issue is that there are a bunch of people like this[0] who get incredibly upset and politicize any attempts to be "the adult in the room" and ask for renaming of unsavory names.

The funniest of these is when Europeans talk about how they are being "forced" to comply with American cultural norms and you go through their account and they are so deeply steeped in American culture due to their participation in the anglophone internet spaces which are dominated by them. People in Europe will argue with you that you are importing woke culture if you suggest that they shouldn't say the N word, but are seemingly completely oblivious to the fact that the reason they find the word exciting to say and they say it in English is an import of American culture

____mr____··on If I own Claude's outputs why can't I train my own model on them?
> Why we restrict model training

> When Outputs are used to train new models without our oversight, additional risks emerge. Safety controls may be lost - ...

---

> What you can do with Outputs

> You can use Claude's Outputs to train models that don't compete with Anthropic's own models.

Why even include that bullshit at top? It is brazenly obvious to anyone with a brain that Anthropic and other frontier AI Labs have no real way to monetize or recoup their investment unless they strongly guard the usage of their models.

____mr____··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
> You can't fund the people who torture and rape random Mexican farmers so Grandma can buy a car.

If you have paid taxes, or participated in the United States of Americas economy, you have directly funded the rape of indigenous Americans, the bombing of Venezuelan fisherman and Iranian schoolgirls.

How do you think the rest of the world should react to this? Total economic embargo towards the US? Leveling the continent? How should Americans who oppose rape and murder of children (like you seem to be) react to the fact that they fund rapes and murders?

____mr____··on The Nixpkgs core team has disbanded
>The moderation team posted an open letter demanding he step down, among other reasons this accused him of jeopardizing the safety of people from "marginalized backgrounds" and allowing "fascists" in the community

>For context, Anduril is a military contractor who produce drones using machine learning on Nvidia GPUs on NixOS as well as ML based systems for detecting migrants on the US-Mexico border, cheapening state violence against migrants.

Given that ICE are currently breaking into peoples apartments and rounding people up into concentration camps, would it not be logical to conclude that the company providing software for the agency are fascists and by extension Eelco relitigating the sponsorship policy can be taken as allowing fascists in the community?

____mr____··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
> However, coding in itself generates no value to a business. A business makes money by solving its users' problems; coding is just one of the means to do so.

Coding is the preferred means to solve many problems and the only means to some certain problems. How does it generate no value to a business when businesses are built on solving problem areas with code? What are you talking about?

____mr____··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
"just a single ChatGPT prompt" is quite far away from "everyone uses an agent harness"
____mr____··on Our position on open-weights models
Yes, this is the exact argument dario is implicitly making by saying that government repression and bioweapons from Chinese models are a danger and then cooperating with Palantir/DOW/US government
____mr____··on Our position on open-weights models
Another USian talking about "authoritarian regimes" like their stormtroopers arent executing civilians in the street every day. Every concern about power getting "into the wrong hands" coming from an American is a blatant lie meant to keep the US' position as the world dominant imperialistic force.
____mr____··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
Not always! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk3lcEeoEy8
____mr____··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
No, but it is a result of international western politics that Mein Kampf is widely available to read
____mr____··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
It really is. Hosting requires a server owned by a company or private individual located in a country. The goals of these companies/individuals and the pressures put on them by their countries are quite political - and as a result hosting becomes political.
____mr____··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
> the maintainers of Codeberg do not believe that they are a "coffee hosting service" that neutrally hosts code from a variety of perspectives.

They do not believe this because this is simply not the reality we live in

> Their view is that hosting code is a political act and this is backed by the donations funding Codeberg's operation.

They are correct in this view. No matter how "apolitical" platforms like Github and various maintainers of open source projects pretend to be, the reality is that creating, hosting and distributing code is highly political and should be treated as such.

____mr____··on 'VPNs are lawful technical tools,' says EU Court in landmark copyright ruling
> it's crazy that French "regulators" can just order ISPs to block a website without any judicial review just because the mere existence of it on the internet constitutes "advertising" to French people.

This is entirely normal if you subscribe to any form of current/past neoliberal ideology surrounding trade, borders and embargos. If you believe that an embargo towards a certain country or business is valid because you believe they are a threat to national/public security, I see little difference between that and ISPs being forbidden from working with certain companies/websites/ip ranges

____mr____··on That post never existed. Stop listening to that thing
> Perhaps people have to be burned by something really bad personally before they realise the limitations?

I'm reminded of that person who killed themselves due to their discussion with ChatGPT and their parent wrote their obituary using ChatGPT. I don't think it is enough.

____mr____··on IceCream – Never use print() to debug again
I think PIT debuggers have their use especially with regards to altering state mid run, but this is the first time I've heard of reverse debugging and it seems incredibly useful, especially for multithreaded software I'm often debugging
____mr____··on Who Is America's Homer?

____mr____··on Xiaomi-Robotics-1

____mr____··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
I know how easy it is to install graphene. But if your abuser is controlling the apps you install they can (should) see you installing a new OS or changing your phone?
____mr____··on GrapheneOS recommended for domestic abuse victims
Very weird post, I dont see how a victim with not enough agency to control what apps are on their phone will somehow be able to install a custom os
____mr____··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
You already have to provide your passport/health insurance/legal id which already has your identity to your airline/doctor/employer. Why is this suddenly a problem when it is digitized?
____mr____··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
We will see how optional it is to not participate in age verification when software used for interfacing with the world (such as bank apps or similar) require you to use age verification. On top of this, barring your children from apps requiring it is just going to socially isolate them from their peers.

The fact of the matter is that if we want companies to be accountable for the pedophiles on their platform, they simply have to enforce some privacy invasive policies.

____mr____··on The difference between "today's task" and "accretive work"
It's a bit jarring, but after reading a couple of articles from the site (it gets posted here often) you adapt to its rythm
____mr____··on Notes on Software Quality
It is still possible to measure the quality of software (or other products) simply by defining a metric that proves quality and testing for it

If I were to write 2 simple functions that reverse an array, and one successfully reverses an array and the other just randomizes it - despite never using this function, we could all agree that function 1 is of higher quality than function 2.

This is an extreme example but the same can be done for, lets say, speed or error handling.

____mr____··on Kernel anti-cheat is an overreach
> If your cheats make you play like a legit player, who cares?

Many people

____mr____··on Notes on Software Quality
If you are using quality as a metric then something having more quality would mean it having more value to more people. So a piece of software working 95% of the time to 1 mil users is deemed "of higher quality" by this metric than a piece of software working 100% of the time to 1k users. I don't think this definition for quality is good at all

All of it is under MIT so probably.

Not sure about if it includes everything to make EVE online though
