ZitchDog··on Billie Eilish, Pearl Jam, 200 artists say AI poses threat to their livelihoods
This was my thought as well. Many people don’t remember how huge Napster was at the time. Dr Dre and Metallica speaking out changed the zeitgeist in a massive way.
ZitchDog··on Billie Eilish, Pearl Jam, 200 artists say AI poses threat to their livelihoods
It definitely worked in the case of Napster! It was a technological setback that bought time for the incumbent industry to catch up. Lots of parallels here actually.
ZitchDog··on OpenAI GPT-4 vs. Groq Mistral-8x7B
100% market share.

A competitor will likely need to be 10x better than ChatGPT in order to get significant market share, not just marginally better in certain scenarios.

The problem is that if you call it out, it will frequently change its answer, even if it was correct. LLMs currently lack chutzpa.
ZitchDog··on Neuralink patient controls games by thinking during interview
I think at that point you could also stimulate visual/audio cortex as well - no headset needed!
ZitchDog··on Show HN: Return To Office Mandates suck
You've made an incorrect assumption - I'm a developer. I work remotely. If my company had an office nearby I would gladly go.
ZitchDog··on Show HN: Return To Office Mandates suck
Work from home is not great for everyone. Since going fully remote, I have noticed a drastic increase in mental health and substance abuse issues among coworkers. An office job provided structure and meaningful daily contact that is not replicated in 30 minute zoom calls. Companies can decide if they want their workers to be in-person or remote, and employees can decide if they want to work for them. Saying that return to office mandates are bad for all companies is just plain dumb.
ZitchDog··on LLM4Decompile: Decompiling Binary Code with LLM
I doubt the code would be identifiable. It wouldn’t be the actual code written, but it would be very similar. But I assume many elements of code style would be lost, and any semblance of code style would be more or less hallucinated.
ZitchDog··on Should toggle button show its current state or the state to which it'll change? (2010)
The interfaces you are talking about require years of training, study and passing multiple tests to demonstrate proficiency. In software UX we are talking about discoverability and approachability for the untrained operator.
ZitchDog··on Should toggle button show its current state or the state to which it'll change? (2010)
Yes, 100%! This is my second most frustrating UX gripe with the Tesla trunk UX - the first being the super long animation you have to wait through in order to open the trunk after putting the car in park. Overall tesla UX is miles ahead of other cars, but the little things like this are so frustrating!
ZitchDog··on Things are about to get worse for generative AI
Napster hit scale too.
ZitchDog··on Python: Just Write SQL
You can avoid this entirely with JavaScript's tagged template literals. Here is an example library: https://github.com/blakeembrey/sql-template-tag
ZitchDog··on Jupyter Notebook 7
99% of websites are not insanely popular development environments. vscode.dev, for example, takes up the full browser width.
ZitchDog··on Remote work on HN: Who is hiring? – 69% jobs in 2023 are remote
Definitely! AI will do your job on the 5th day. Try not to think further ahead than that.
ZitchDog··on The force that shapes everything around us: Parking
I live in Iowa City - thanks for the shoutout! I can confirm - I work downtown, it's great. Boulder has a similar concept.
ZitchDog··on DMT, Derealization, and Depersonalization
I have tried psychedelics at high dose and never had any issues with derealization. However when I started meditating 1/hr per day I started noticing things just started seeming "fake" and like I wasn't a "real person". Backing off to meditating 30 minutes daily, it completely went away.
ZitchDog··on “But the SEC let us go public” and other flawed arguments in Coinbase's defense
Heroin sales fund all sorts of terrible things.
ZitchDog··on Meta announces its Quest 3 VR headset
Eye tracking is hardly mentioned in this press release but I think is a Huge Deal. Will allow foveated rendering (huge optimization) as well as increased emotional connection in face to face experiences.

"The eyes are the window to the soul."

edit: My mistake, I misread the PR, quest 3 does not have eye tracking. Boo.

ZitchDog··on A morale crisis after multiple Meta layoffs
I agree. There has been tremendous whiplash in the markets. We went from free money and “new paradigms” to QT belt tightening and broken dreams. If people think they could lead better than Zuck, they should start a company and beat him.
ZitchDog··on How to Stop Ruminating
Interesting. I am definitely not a doctor. If you have medical advice to practice this technique, I would follow it.

I will say that I have been practicing mindfulness meditation for 7 years in various traditions and have never come across this technique. It also goes against the definition of mindfulness (paying attention to the present moment without judgement) as it is applying judgement to your thoughts.

I have experienced very difficult and dark periods of meditation when I was hard on myself for thinking, and learning to be very kind to myself in meditation was a huge step forward in my practice. Rather than “stop”, I say “thinking” to myself in a kind way.

ZitchDog··on How to Stop Ruminating
Just a heads up for anyone reading this, as a mindfulness coach I wouldn’t recommend this technique. The rubber band and “stop” voice are pretty harsh and rather we want to practice inner kindness and letting go.
ZitchDog··on Remembering Bob Lee
I am so sorry to hear this, my heart goes out to Bob’s family. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob a few times while doing Android dev, he always went to Strange Loop. He was kind, smart, and funny. He was one of those CTOs that still loved to hack and tinker. The world will miss you, crazybob.
ZitchDog··on Pairing With GPT-4
I doubt it will be the standard. I think it will always be faster to process data using a script generated by the LLM.

One thing I could see is a "self updating" script, that adjusts its logic on the fly when new data are found.

ZitchDog··on TaxyAI: Open-source browser automation with GPT-4
Very cool! I'm curious if you tried having it interactively query the DOM, rather than sending a simplified DOM? I was toying with a similar idea but was thinking it could just look iteratively for all buttons/text fields on the page.
ZitchDog··on Out of the Tar Pit (2006) [pdf]
Oh right, I forgot the ORM with "distributed caching" needed between the database and GraphQL layers. More hidden state.
ZitchDog··on Out of the Tar Pit (2006) [pdf]
A classic paper with a dream that has yet to be realized. We continue to bolt state on top of state. Redux bolted on top of GraphQL on top of Redis on top of Postgres. We can do better.
ZitchDog··on Pulsar – A Community-Led Hyper-Hackable Text Editor
I haven’t read the docs lately but when I was hacking on Atom years ago, the plugin model was TOO freeform, and with plugins all running on the main thread, it was easy for a plugin to kill performance and slow down the editor. The vscode model strikes a better tradeoff between extensibility and performance. Extensions have less power but my editing experience is never ruined by a rogue extension.
ZitchDog··on Generate unique drum samples using artificial intelligence
It's not an interesting problem, we in the US already have a legal definition of similarity for the purpose of copywright law, I assume other countries do as well.
ZitchDog··on Ask HN: Feeling Hopeless and Lost at 23
Heavily agree. Be sure to concentrate on making connections with top tier devs at work. You landed a role at a world class technology company. You are likely surrounded by amazing talent. The skills and network you will build at your job will dwarf any master’s degree.
