Zelmor··on Ask HN: What linux desktop tools/apps boosted your productivity?
Compiz? Are you joking? In what way could Compiz boost your productivity?
Zelmor··on Google One
They put expensive pricing out so that the items covering 90% of their userbase look more appealing. Pricing 101. Look at any free to play game where you can buy in-game currency.

[poor man's offer] [crap offer] [real offer] [expensive crap offer]

Zelmor··on SF is so expensive that waiters can no longer afford to live in the city
^ Underrated post.
Zelmor··on Do I really need to get out the soldering-iron again?
Why not reflect on the one you just finished? Stop. Think.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: How do you overcome the fear of being friendly at work?
Start by learning to listen quietly and pay attention when someone is talking about whatever they do talk about. Ask questions instead of sharing your opinion. There is a lot to learn from others this way. How they solve problems, how they perceive change in their work/life/health. You will have time on your own to reflect how you felt about what that person shared with you, no reason to reflect right away. You can do that later, once you had time to consider.

It is in the mirror of other people's souls that we get to see who we really are.

Zelmor··on Ask HN: Finding meaning in what we do everyday
Your job is just that. A job. Find a hobby, find a community. Hold up your life on as many columns of meaning as you can, so that when one collapses, you do not go down with it. It will be a loss, but you will have plenty more things to live for, and over time the loss will fade.
Zelmor··on An Epidemic of Loneliness in America?
Half, I'd say.
Zelmor··on Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much?
I fear the days I might have to spend in a hospital. My hope is that I will have saved enough money to afford home-care and die in my own bed, with a cat or a dog nearby.
Zelmor··on Valve creates new revenue sharing tiers to give big sellers a break
Valve's cuts are fine. I remember the times when developers were glad if they got 20-30% of the profits in general, with publisher deals starting at 70% cuts for IP-first game releases, and way higher if it was your first game. This after you pitched the game with a tech demo running, of course.

Steam is a blessing on digital distribution, and the most competent platform to date, albeit it has its problems.

Zelmor··on Ask HN: Why don't people program on their phone?
Because phones and tablets are consumption devices, no matter how many productivity hack articles you read. These articles are also written by people who don't produce anything of value but waste your time. Much like your phone.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: I have constantly fallen prey to office politics. Need Advice
Bad streak, it happens, man. Wait for the bonus, then leave for something else. Plenty opportunities in the wide world.
Zelmor··on How to permanently leave Facebook
I'm keeping in touch with a dozen people via emails. They never had Facebook, and as far as I can tell, they are better off than most people. Our mail exchanges are long form and meaningful, with pictures, links to interesting things, and so on. They can be sporadic, sometimes months go inbetween, but we always come around to write a couple pages to the other person.

Facebook Messenger is a convenience that I have, but the people who do reach out to me usually do so just to organize a night out. They said they would call if they couldn't write.. We have group talks organizing board game nights, because communication is easier, and we have group chats for sharing random cute shit like cat videos. I do not get rid of it because for one specific friend I'd need to use Whatsapp anyway, because he is precious and I understand that he doesn't want Yet Another Secure Messaging App (telegram to be specific) on his phone/desktop just for me.

Zelmor··on Looking Glass, a revolutionary window manager revealed in 2006
>I wonder why it never really took off

Because it's useless garbage that nobody needs and that doesn't fix any problems.

Zelmor··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Use duck duck go, my lad.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: Questions about a Microsoft Offer
Don't compare to what your friends are making, compare to what you need to make to live well and save up for early retirement. If you'd earn double but would also spend double in a year from now, you're not in great shape financially. Look into your financial spending history, and make up your mind.

Anyway, all three companies are doing evil in the world, as far as I'm concerned, so I'd rather stay with the startup. Then again, I'm just your average freetard open source / freedom advocate.

Zelmor··on Shutting Down Google+ for Consumers
Well they could start by planting trees.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: How to avoid TV addiction?
Sell your tv.

If you don't want to smoke, why carry a box of cigs?

Zelmor··on Ask HN: What's the best small, low-power laptop available today?
ThinkPad x270 can go a long time. Check the platform specifications.
Zelmor··on You cant delete your netflix account. Doesnt this violate GDPR?
You also cannot delete your HN account.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: Do you maintain two laptops for work and life?
Virtual machines for work. One per client, never cross the beams. Host OS is for own stuff.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: Help (no life thread)
Find a hobby that doesn't involve the computer. Vegetable gardening is my go to send activity. I have citrus trees too, which are wonderful when flowering indoors during wintertime.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: What is the most unethical thing you've done as a programmer?
Are they by any chance working with AX Dynamics?
Zelmor··on Ask HN: What do you do when you suddenly feel like not working anymore?
Do sports. Dig up the garden and get into raising your own vegetables. Gardening is the spice of life.
Zelmor··on Microsoft acquires Github
I, for one, have cancelled my subscription and moved all private repositories off GitHub.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: Linux laptop on a budget?
T420 with Debian 9, everything works out of the box.
Zelmor··on Ask HN: Is it 'normal' to struggle so hard with work?

Zelmor··on Saudi Arabia detains 201 princes, businessmen in $100B corruption probe
Are they any worse than your US overlords?
Zelmor··on Show HN: No Coin – A browser extension to block coin miners
That's actually a great idea.
Zelmor··on Facebook recruiting and Unix systems
Bio-droid recruiter. You shouldn't feel bad about it. Hopefully these sort of obstacles will be removed with automation of recruiting processes.
Zelmor··on Incredible shrinking airline seat
This is not an issue in Europe, as much as I can tell. The seats are acceptable, and the people are much less inclined to be overweight.
