Zeebrommer··on Carbon-aware electricity pricing, measured daily on 38 grids
Mostly yes, but it works the other direction as well: a fossil power station may not want to completely shut down because it expects more demand later in the day, and offer a few hours of low cost electricity to stay in the merit order.
Zeebrommer··on How Mark Klein told the EFF about Room 641A [book excerpt]
I don't think that needs reminding.
Zeebrommer··on I bought Friendster for $30k – Here's what I'm doing with it
> You’d have to be specifically watching the domain friendster.com at the right time to find and participate in the auction, or you’d have to actively watch gname.com daily to see this auction.

You're telling me there's no "notify me when domain X becomes for sale" service?

Zeebrommer··on Shipmap.org
In the North Atlantic most paths are slightly curved to take the most efficient route (taking curvature of the earth into account). There is one prevalent route from Gibraltar to Florida that is straight as an arrow though. What is up with that?
Zeebrommer··on I sell onions on the Internet (2019)
I know it does for a small Dutch setup :) https://www.kalamatakarma.com/ Marketing is still completely word of mouth afaik, but the webshop makes it easier for total strangers to tag along.
Zeebrommer··on “This telegram must be closely paraphrased before being communicated to anyone”
Or ending it with the same salute involving the name of the leader, for that matter.
Zeebrommer··on John Carmack's arguments against building a custom XR OS at Meta
A bit like Anathem.
Zeebrommer··on When we get Komooted
Is someone even trying to open source that type of content (routes, pois)?
Zeebrommer··on My sourdough starter has twins
From experience, the bread has a better rise when I feed my starter for three or more cycles/days after storing it in the fridge. As if it needs to "wake up" and increase its speed of metabolism.
Zeebrommer··on How to give a senior leader feedback without getting fired
I agree that most leaders will now they are fallible, and also have some idea of which things are problematic. As an inexperienced leader, I still valued getting "known feedback". It gave me a better idea of which problems were growing too large, and which ones remained minor annoyances. In addition, acknowledging the points that were brought up and explaining why I hadn't gotten to addressing them (besides being human) usually gave the person giving the feedback a more positive outlook.
Zeebrommer··on WireGuard for the ESP32
Rust is getting there, but I don't think it's production ready yet: https://github.com/esp-rs
Zeebrommer··on WireGuard for the ESP32
That's an interesting idea, you'd probably be able to know ip addresses via wireguard. Protocols like CoAP or SenML can be used to keep payloads small.

MQTT, aside from being pubsub, has more functionality that is especially useful in IoT though: robust sessions with LW&T to monitor onlineness, and retained topics to deliver messages as devices come online again

Zeebrommer··on The Netherlands may be the first country to hit the limits of growth
I'm curious which lost land you are referring to.

Building skyscrapers on former swamps is indeed difficult.

Zeebrommer··on The Netherlands may be the first country to hit the limits of growth
> This is honestly just dumb

Yes, but in an indirect way. At some point, nitrogen deposition was identified as harmful to nature, and emissions targets were put in place. Politicians then did everything they could not to be the one having to introduce unpopular legislation, until they couldn't anymore. Now the government has painted themselves in a corner and cannot give permits for building projects anymore without breaking the law.

I think we'll see this more often in the future when the consequences of ambitious targets will need to be reckoned with.

Zeebrommer··on Instagram is shifting to videos – users aren't happy
That is not nearly the same thing. The US and western Europe have been roughly aligned about geopolitical interests, values (democracy, freedom, mostly liberal, based on a secularising Christian foundation), rules and laws. China is diametrically opposed on all those things.

The cultural influence of the US on Europe is enormous, and the US has often crossed the line spying on European citizens, but the US is not an adversary.

Zeebrommer··on Hard to work with
Makes me think of the Peter principle. Pretty depressing conclusion though: a large company is bound to be an environment with many distractions by underperformers. Any way out?

Zeebrommer··on Roblox has been down for over 24 hours
I wouldn't have thought "any publicity is good publicity" would hold even in this case.
Zeebrommer··on Handheld Device Fights Fatigue by Stimulating Vagus Nerve
It's wonderful that this device may help people perform for very long stretches of time where that is unavoidable. It will probably make easier to deem a long shift 'unavoidable' though: if you can have people be alert for 12+ hours while sleep-deprived, why avoid it?
Zeebrommer··on Doom running on a pregnancy test
One wonders how this method was discovered...
Zeebrommer··on A new design ship in the Philippines is partly powered by wave energy
This is exactly the kind of order-of-magnitude estimation that I was looking for in the article. Where did you get the wave energy numbers?
Zeebrommer··on India bans TikTok, WeChat, and dozens of other Chinese apps
This is a consequence of Brexit and the election of Trump, democratic decisions that caught many people in power by surprise. Sophisticated use of social media platforms turned out to have a significant influence on public opinion. Although I agree that in principle everyone should be enabled to seek out their own information sources and form their own independent opinions, this is not what happens in the age of polarized sensationalist identity politics.
Zeebrommer··on Free Textbooks from Springer, Categorised
Same here. With so much high-quality information and entertainment available the choice of what to invest time in becomes harder and harder, eventually consuming a significant portion of that limited time budget to begin with.
Zeebrommer··on Shape Up: Stop Running in Circles and Ship Work That Matters
I'm considering implementing part of this at work. It feels less ritualistic than scrum, and leaner for a small organization. The 'appetite' concept brings out the discussion of cost (time) vs (business) value. I feel this is often lost in scrum, where putting something on the backlog and estimating its size are often consecutive. Does HN have any experience with this framework?
Zeebrommer··on Running Awk in parallel to process 256M records
I am often impressed by the things that can be done with these old-school UNIX tools. I'm trying to learn a few of them, and the most difficult part are these very implicit syntax constructions. How is the naive observer to know that in bash `$(something)` is command substitution, but in a Makefile `$(something)` is just a normal variable? With `awk`, `sed` and friends it gets even worse of course.

Is the proper answer 'just learn it'? Are these tools one of these things (like musical instruments or painting) where the initial learning phase is tedious and frustrating, but the potential is basically limitless?

Zeebrommer··on What concept would improve everybody's cognitive toolkit? Kayfabe (2011)
'lie' is too strong a word perhaps, but 'story', in the sense that Harari uses it in Sapiens, is exactly what it is. A fiction, but not less real.
Zeebrommer··on What The Economist doesn't tell you
Whataboutism, and totally uncalled for.
Zeebrommer··on Please Don't Lie
Did you publish it to any Dutch news outlets or opinion platforms?
Zeebrommer··on Jackson Pollock's painting technique
Would you count Rothko under the solid colour canvasses? On paper they don't look like much, but the few that I've seen in real life somehow still really left an impression on me.
Zeebrommer··on MIT Media Lab Scientist Used Refugees to Tout Food Computers That Didn't Work
To get an impression of what it looks like from the ground: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=westland%20lichtver...

It's difficult to compare the real-life view with pictures (just like the aurora). And it isn't always as bad. But on cloudy, cold nights, it can have an apocalyptic feel to it.
