Xymak1y··on Apple really needs two passwords, not one for everything
I recently bough an ipod and set it up with a new apple id. I didn't have access to a computer at the time, and my god, it was such a pain. Not only are the password requirements utterly stupid (at least one digit, one capital letter, you know it), I was continously prompted to set up three security questions to make my account safer. The one I'm just trying to set up so I can download some free apps (I didn't have any sort of payment options associated with the account at all!). Of course it isn't enough that I have to input my Apple password separately to every single app that might use it - Facetime, iMessage, iCloud backup. When I download a free app, it still prompts me to input my password. Why? What's the risk here?

All in all it took about 20 minutes only to be able to download a news app. Not exactly user-friendly.

Xymak1y··on Police concerned with Apple iOS 6 mapping system
Has there been a credible source that the decision to get rid of Google Maps has in fact been made by Apple? I always thought it had been Google's decision, but I never found a source confirming either.
Xymak1y··on Why do you need a Smartphone?
Does everyone who owns a smartphone do this?
Xymak1y··on AWS: Network Connectivity issues affecting EC2 in US-EAST-1
Health Dashboard updated the status to "Resolved":

5:17 AM PDT Between 12:51 AM and 4:52 AM PDT we experienced elevated packet loss affecting instances in the US-EAST-1 region. Some of our APIs also experienced increased error rates and latencies. The issue has been resolved and the service is currently operating normally.

Xymak1y··on Naming Things with Hashes
What is the practical application of this? As opposed to a generic link shortener? I mean how is a 32-bit hash better than just using bit.ly/Nx7ax1?
Xymak1y··on This Bikesharing Program Lets You Lock Your Bike Anywhere
You can leave it outside the limits - they just charge a fee for bringing it back (15€ I think.)
Xymak1y··on This Bikesharing Program Lets You Lock Your Bike Anywhere
We've had a similar program to this in Germany for some years now: http://www.callabike-interaktiv.de/

Within inner city limits, you can use your smartphone to get an unlock code (or call a hotline), then use the bike for 8 cents per minute as long as you wish and drop it off anywhere (again, within city limits).

You would need to know them a bit at least - for debugging.
Xymak1y··on Tomorrow Theme
Do you know where to get this theme for Sublime Text?
Xymak1y··on Show HN: HackerNews reimagined without tables or center elements.
I agree, except this addon is useful for any site - I suggest you look at it.

You should check out the Lazarus browser addon for textarea backups :)
Xymak1y··on 4chan: Beyond one billion
Quote from the article:

Yet somehow we made it into 2009, and things began to look up. Long plagued by an inability to attract mainstream advertising, I partnered with an individual who took over representing 4chan's ad inventory, and for the first time in years the site began to break even.

Xymak1y··on Captchas Are Becoming Ridiculous
How would you login without cookies anyway?
Xymak1y··on GIT is the new FTP
Hidden directories are usully not accessible from outside I think.
Xymak1y··on Dropbox users' email addresses targeted by spam?
As pointed out by users in the forum post, the compromised e-mail addresses have been used not on just one Dropbox account but several. Additionally those e-mail addresses were not just trivial guesses like dropbox1@domain.com or dropbox2@domain.com, or at least they were for me.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but where else could a non-guessable e-mail address which was never used anywhere else been leaked from if not Dropbox itself?

Xymak1y··on Dropbox users' email addresses targeted by spam?
I've been personally affected by this leak. All the e-mail addresses that I am now receiving spam on have only been used for Dropbox purposes and nothing else. In addition this was over a year ago. So - email only used for dropbox, last transferred over the web a year ago: where else would it have been leaked from?

// I did change the title to not mislead readers.

Xymak1y··on Some things beginners might not know about Sublime Text
Also notable is that you can skip the currently selected element (i.e. unselect it) if you press ctrl+k+d. Sublime will then continue to select the next word, but leaves the one you just selected unselected.
Xymak1y··on Show HN: How HN's upvote link works
It's an interesting way to not use XMLHttpRequest for Ajax.
