X4··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
OK, you got me in.

I've got a Software Architecture assignment which allows me to work on any kind of large scale Project (regardless of number of languages and complexity) for 3 Months. The end result will be planned, discussed and evaluated scientifically. We're two experienced devs. Suggestions for ideas are welcome!

X4··on Giving Away Our Recommendation Engine
WOW, Awesome Documentation and Product!! Kudos and Greetings from Germany 😊

Those who know what Hadoop, Pig and the whole "Data Science Stack" is, will find this surely useful.

X4··on Ask HN: Any hackers over 60? 70?
😢 That's awesome and encouraging ! Thanks for the thoroughly written response and the great tips!
X4··on WebM support on 4chan
Not sure how you're going to solve the WebM hosting issues, but I would be really curious to see a list of issues large sites like 4chan have. I think me and other people would surely like to solve such «sysadmin/developer puzzles» for fun.

WebP is larger than APNG [1] and is supported more widely according to the following table [2]. There is a way to add compatibility to older browser too [3]. Other than that, there are also Opera [4] and Chrome [5] extensions for APNG.

Update: Found a successful APNG kickstarter campaign, which lists some interesting APNG tools and libraries. [6]

Also just tested myself how the filesize compares for different file formats able to host animated content for this source image [7].

     gif – 679,6 Kb
     apng – 547,1 Kb
     mp4 – 273,8 Kb
     webp – 618,9 Kb
(sorry, have no webm converter here)

X4··on Ask HN: Any hackers over 60? 70?
Impressive! I always have the fear that when I get older, that I'll not be able to follow up with all the new stuff that's appearing. I believe that many do so. Especially sites like HN/Reddit are introducing a lot of new technology and information, which maybe harder to follow with age.

How do you manage to stay ahead of your time?

X4··on Functional C (1997)
@colmmacc would you please mind submitting or sharing the link to the book, paper or ressource you think that teaches the elegant Advanced Functional C Programming techniques you mention? I'd definitely upvote it.
X4··on Caloric restriction reduces age-related and all-cause mortality in rhesus monkeys
Ok, I think most of you who read PROTEIN, may misunderstand a bit here, I'll add a bit of info to clarify the protein debate a bit.

There are almost indefinite combinations of proteins, many of which have vastly different effects on the body and it's cells. To shed a bit of light on proteins, you should know that most enzymes are proteins too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzyme

Some forms of 'proteins' may increase cancerous growth, other may inhibit it and there are many of such activators/inhibitors, just so you know. Only take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myosin which there are proteins ("enzymes"), which may inhibit it, leading to a super-muscular body. It's a very small change, but the result is not what you would expect from just a protein. The contrary is true too, it could have damaging effect too. We are NOT talking about supplements here, but the form of proteins that occur in Nature. They are by far not researched enough to give any form of advice and there are still new breakthroughs, findings and surprises made in the area.

Roughly saying that no calories means, more lifetime, is like saying that not fueling a motor will increase it's lifetime.

Human Life is not about getting as old as possible anyway. My personal opinion is that it's there to bring healthy and smart kids to the world, which help in the betterment of the world with their creativity, skills, ideas, muscles, efforts and visions. Simple as that.

X4··on Can I delete my Skype account?
This makes all the other pro data contention arguments moot, I agree with woof. Whatever company, ideology or other room anomaly disturbs the views of people who think that that data (aka content) should be undeletable "because", is hereby just devalued in the argumentative value.
X4··on 2-Year-Olds Convert Binary To Hexadecimals In Game Experiment
Fully agree with jerf on that, adults not only have the mental barrier, but also their mental adaptivity ratio is lower than that of kids. I am not sure, if it's just the neural plasticity that's reason for this or the amount of neural circuitry's rewiring that is necessary at a higher age, due to more synaptic connections.

I mean chinese parents who teach their kids to learn many languages, maths etc. at age 1 and up may be cruel, but if they actually don't force the kids, but let them have fun and let them do those tasks voluntarily, then I fully support the early education method.

X4··on Introducing Opencall
Does it have any affiliation with lieferheld.de/ ??

The reason I ask: I hate their, and their competitor's pervasive and mad behavior, when it comes to pitching their own product, whilst DDoSing etc. their competitor.

X4··on Introducing Opencall
Interesting that you think that, do you have any HN-Show examples to support the point, or other sources? Not to be pedantic, I am really just curious.
X4··on Introducing Opencall
https://github.com/discourse/discourse ain't bad for forums

and

http://daux.io/ and http://apiblueprint.org/ look like a good way document your software

X4··on Introducing Opencall
@jarofgreen nice of you, but I think you got me a little wrong, or I wasn't clear enough. My main message regarding opensource was:

> Open Source doesn't mean that you cannot put a price tag on it.

The other things could be done, but you're right, they don't fall under the strict definition of opensource. It would require a different license :)

Oh, btw, the op should take a look at https://pkgr.io/ and https://github.com/jordansissel/fpm

X4··on Introducing Opencall
hehe, your server is HN'ed :)

I'd replace the homepage (temporarily) to the absolute minimum during the time it's bombarded with requests, unless you have a vserver/cloud-host that you can scale up. Or change the server your DNS records point to, if you use CNAME, to one at rackspace, github homepage, or anywhere else with a minimal homepage. But I'm sure the guys @HN have better tips :)

I don't know much about legal stuff and licenses, but I would allow anyone to use your software as long as it's code is shared, except for enterprises. Companies who want to use it commercially and have more than 1-5 employees would need to obtain a license. Open Source doesn't mean that you cannot put a price tag on it.

But as you said, prepackaging the stuff as a deb/rpm and allowing white-labeling for enterprise customers would be a good way get some money back from this. Just saying, but you could, if you wanted to, add advertising into the opensource product and disallow it's removal unless a license is obtained. If you were an SaaS, you could collect data and metrics, that you could monetize, but I'm glad you aren't anymore :)

@pg I think there should be a sticky informing website owners on howto react, when their website is HN'ed. Somewhere in the footer of the homepage or so.. This is happening a bit too often and many aren't prepared for such high traffic peaks.

X4··on Why Lisp is a Big Hack and Haskell is Doomed to Succeed (2011)
haskell evangelism? I mean I like haskell, but this theory or prophecy is based on no facts.
X4··on Ask HN: Open accelerator program without the VC?
May I ask what acceleration means? I always thought it's another word for money and some pro tips.

I, would be happy, if I could join an experienced and older team and start working on an interesting problem. Doing my M.Sc. in CompSci in Germany atm. and none of my friends has any entrepreneurial ambitions or skills, which is depressing and sad. All of them just want a job in the industry. Not really expecting payment.

X4··on A New—and Reversible—Cause of Aging
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a geneticist, but the logical reason for this sounds as simple as enriching the baby's DNA with that from the mother and father. Also only cells, which are our main building blocks, suffer from death. The death as we know it, is only affecting "bodily" species incl. single-celled life forms. DNA doesn't die, ever (given good conditions). That's why scientists can still extract DNA from animals which have been died thousands or millions of years ago.
X4··on A New—and Reversible—Cause of Aging
Without being an expert in the area, but having some detailed knowledge in the field, it honestly sounds like hype. The statement that it wasn't mentioned anywhere, before is bogus. Take a look at the source [1] that describes how NAD actually has an effect on telomeres.

They really suggest using regular supplements on that url, which I'd call bullshit! I can't tell, if it's the editors fault, a missunderstandin, or if they really mean that. That's because I've no access to the real paper.

X4··on A New—and Reversible—Cause of Aging
Asked a buddy who ain't that smart on what he would do, if he could live 300 years.

He said: "I'd rob a bank, big time."

I asked why he would do that and he said that he could give the money to a trustee and sit his time and become rich afterwards.

So your story sounds legit to me. And I just asked for 300 years. Living 16.000 years like in the movie: "The man from Earth", was way out of his graspable zone. And he started arguing about god would kill you and so on...

X4··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
Weird, I thought it's just 5-10y of experience in the industry that upgrades you to a senior. Isn't it??
X4··on Sony Digital Paper e-ink PDF tablet for notes and forms
yeah that makes a lot of sense, good point!
X4··on GNU APL 1.3
My prof also writes complex APL code live and I've never seen a program he made that didn't run or had a bug. He has a I ❤ APL sticker on his laptop. And he is a god damn genius, we can't compare us to him in absolutely no, no way. It doesn't lead to a different state of mind, that guy was already born a genius a little like rainman, but without the downsides.

He switched to J after I showed him that a few years ago and is ever happy since. He told me that he paid about 2000bucks for his APL compiler back then.

X4··on Sony Digital Paper e-ink PDF tablet for notes and forms
a) Would you please tell me where you found how much it costs and where I can buy it please?

b) I really need something like this urgently. $1000 isn't much, if it makes your life measurably easier. It IS expensive, but unlike tablets, smartphones, convertibles and notebooks this is something that directly effects my productivity.

c) I was hoping for foldable Mirasol or Electrowetting (EWD) displays in Q1 2014 since 2009 and it's still not there. These are the most promising display technologies that I know of, which are still hold back for reasons that I simply don't understand. It may have to do with the Display Technology Cartels, bad marketing, or no funding. I just wish to know why Electrowetting isn't mainstream yet. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf1GjCaYzYg The MirasolHD 5,1" display prototype with 2.560 x 1.440 Pixel had a pixel depth of incredible 577 ppi and you could use clearly see everything at direct sunlight. Here's an old video I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDoVzKd9H4U

PS: It makes me quite sad and disappointed that we still don't have this technology:

X4··on Introducing Ring -3 Rootkits: BIOS rootkit targeting vPro chipsets (2009) [pdf]
Are there any ways to defend against the attack?

I can only think of buying AMD Chips with CoreBios instead, which of I don't know, if they may have similar issues. Maybe buy Tilera, or other manycore chips instead?

This article with the title: "Expert Says NSA Have Backdoors Built Into Intel And AMD Processors" raises some concerns, even though I don't know, if the source can be trusted. http://www.eteknix.com/expert-says-nsa-have-backdoors-built-...

Good point! The tool should create a reading difficulty score and only offer selecting wpm, if it's beneficial.

Readability tests:

    * Accelerated Reader ATOS
    * Automated Readability Index (ARI)
    * Coleman-Liau Index
    * Dale-Chall Readability Formula

same here, with Firefox.
X4··on Squirt.io – Readability Meets Spritz Speed Reading
Totally right!! I trained myself to read two lines at once, but a tool that takes the burden of putting the pieces of the sentences together in the mind would be very very welcome! It could display two words ontop of each other that would otherwise be next to each other.

UX shows that this is the most digestable way to consume information. Going vertical should be preferred over going horizontal.

Please please somebody, would you give nilkn's idea an ear?

X4··on Squirt.io – Readability Meets Spritz Speed Reading
meh, I think you generalize a lot here. There are people who are very comfortably reading at 1000wpm and beyond and keep all of the story in the mind. Some people can even accurately repeat the sped read texts. There are more people who can do that, than you may think.

Personally I would NOT YET read a real book this way, for one reason: I cannot keep a person's name in memory well enough and would mix up roles and who said what. Even though I very rarely read romans (mostly publications) you can imagine how often you hear names in a text. But that's maybe just me, idk.

I guess you would feel embarrassed, if you couldn't like me keep persons names in association with their faces well enough. Example: 100-200 persons you meet every day and you remember 50names at most and that's only because you know them very well. You have to say 'hi' to all the others you just can't remember the name of. Luckily I don't mix up faces that much up anymore. Recently I met a girl whose name I simply couldn't recall although I've seen her 100s of times. Anyway she reminded me that I already have her in my phone-book, so yeah I'll try to keep it memorized.

What 'bout making it simpler and instead of colorizing nouns you colorize a horizontal gradient like http://www.beelinereader.com/
