WhiteOwlLion··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Immunosuppressants like tacrolimus given at too high of a level for many years can wear down your kidneys faster requiring a transplant potentially after ten years.
WhiteOwlLion··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Your liver makes platelets so if your liver function is not optimal, wound healing is harder.

Some people also have rare diseases where they don’t have clotting factors so require a transfusion of clotting factors before surgery for optimal wound healing.

WhiteOwlLion··on Open-weight AI is having its Kubernetes moment
Just ask the model about Tianamen Square and you know if it’s a Chinese model or not.
WhiteOwlLion··on Costco is the anti-Amazon
You're assuming working from home automatically makes you far from delivery options. It all depends on your walkability and drivability score. I'm residential, but I have retail delivery options within a few miles. So, the nuance really depends on where things will go from and to.
WhiteOwlLion··on Tokenmaxxing is dead, long live tokenmaxxing
Then those same organizations that "give in" end up providing inferior AI tools, and you face the dilemma of either using poor models and accepting poor results or sharing data with better models that may not be governed correctly.
WhiteOwlLion··on AI Coding at Home Without Going Broke
There’s a lot of Xeon chips for $10 on eBay. Too bad there’s no drive for cpu based inference. The data center will need to swap out the older gpu clusters so what does that do for hardware pricing on data center gpus? H100 are cheap enough but the power requirements make it a long term net negative for how much pay for power in California.
WhiteOwlLion··on Policy on the AI Exponential
Maybe if attribution is available. What do you do for the rest of the ingested content? I think based on the content itself, you assign percentages to the top 3 industries like a naics code. Then whatever Anthropic makes as gross or net, a percentage goes to each industry via assigned bank accounts or USDC addresses via solana or some scalable payment system. Could be the start of ubi or some sort of compensation for jobs displaced by ai usage. So every input gets tagged for categories and every output gets tagged for the same naics categories via federal law.
WhiteOwlLion··on I Won't Download Your App. The Web Version Is A-OK
I use Twitter/X on web because the iOS so bad.
WhiteOwlLion··on Bubble Sorted Amen Break
Samplers became accessible at the time which allowed music production with just loops. Look at snap I got the power. All looped samples
WhiteOwlLion··on My spicy take on vibe coding for PMs
You make a better product if you plan it out first. That’s part of a PM’s job so it’s natural fit when the ai does the coding. The code may not be ideal but it’ll have the structure you can improve on.

What about HashCash, where proof of work increases with more pull requests from a user ID? Beyond typical submission frequency, proof-of-work would become exponentially more difficult to prevent spam, helping to keep the riff-raff out.

Doesn't require money, just computing power.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashcash

If HiveCoin were still around, we could donate the hashing power to some tech-related non-profit.

WhiteOwlLion··on Ask HN: Determine sound quality of a file, objectively?
https://friture.org/

spectral analyzer. not sure if you need cli or batch function, but the frequency will be cut off regardless of the purported bitrate even if it was "upscaled" since those frequencies were chopped previously. you can see a sample screenshot in the upper left showing the frequency. re-encode a 320kbps to 128kbps and you can see the frequency range diminished on the 128kbps.

WhiteOwlLion··on Anatomy of a credit card rewards program
If you're only getting back 1% to 2%, you're losing out on better cash back cards.
WhiteOwlLion··on BTFS: BitTorrent Filesystem
Aren't torrents block based so file boundaries are not observed without hacks?
WhiteOwlLion··on Seeing like a bank
you're forgetting the next person they give that 100 bucks to, deposits that money (if not completely spent) into a bank, which is again used to lend out more money.
WhiteOwlLion··on Seeing like a bank
You sometimes have to treat adults like little children. The first thing I say is, "you're not in trouble". Kids assume if an adult talks to them, they are automatically in trouble. I've gotten a lot of helpful results by telling people no one is in trouble when you make your inquiry. Amazing how grown adults regress to children when a different department calls them.

WhiteOwlLion··on iSponsorBlockTV v2: SponsorBlock for TVs and game consoles
seems like a good project to integration with ChatGPT video and figure out ways to automatically insert start & end times for sponsors, interaction reminders, intro, outro, etc. With a little training, this could be fully automated accurately.
WhiteOwlLion··on Tom Lesley has published 40 books in 2023, all with 100% positive reviews
The trademarks are required for Chinese businesses to house products in the USA for Amazon FBA (freigh by Amazon). They make non-sensical trademarks so there's no conflict with the trademark office. Techquickie (Linus Tech Tips) has an episode on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UrqlMfwUC4

Amazon 3P (third party) has essentially become what eBay was in the 90s except the crap is sometimes housed in the USA for faster delivery. Amazon doesn't care. It pretty much all fell apart after he separated from McKenzie and lost the way.

If I include tl;dr or eli5, chatGPT makes an effort to distill the answer to the essentials.
WhiteOwlLion··on The best kimchi is made in earthenware pots
I read the Portuguese introduced chilli pepper in the 15th century, but Wikipedia says 16th century. There were other forms pickled vegetables like mool-kimchi but that doesn't have the spice component.
WhiteOwlLion··on The best kimchi is made in earthenware pots
Everyone has a different taste, but I do concur with you. Your grandma and my grandma kept to the traditional manual methods and that tastes best. The chilli peppers cultivated in Korea have a different sweeter taste IMO and the cheaper ones imported from China (while cheaper) do not hold up in terms of the sweetness and balanced spice. The earthenware pot also act as a refrigerant by being buried in the ground. Since the pot is placed below the frostline, kimchi is available through winter.

WhiteOwlLion··on Tell HN: Copying and pasting from ChatGPT unsolicited sucks
You haven't met some of my friends. Do we need a humility parameter with ChatGPT?
WhiteOwlLion··on Which Banks Had Higher Performing PPP Loans
Technology helped the small guys compete with the big boys. Cross River is a tiny bank yet they ranked 4th after the top 3 banks with staff, resources, and scale beyond Cross River. Yet, they were were able to utilize fintech to rank 4th. It really put the top 3 to shame and shows how limp they are when it comes to innovation and agility.
WhiteOwlLion··on Ask HN: “Git” for Microsoft Office?
Yes, it is called Google Docs. It has all the version history and the person that made the edit known. Still unimpressed with Office collaboration features and all the other Microsoft tools you need like SharePoint. Its 2020! Microsoft had 20 years to get it right and they are still giving us sub-par features.
WhiteOwlLion··on DigitalOcean VPC
As long as you don't use vendor specific tools, who cares? That's the point of kubernetes and to abstract away the whole "cloud" provider. Let it become a commodity and a race to the bottom.
WhiteOwlLion··on Zipcall.io – Free browser-based video calling
Does this work smartphones or tablets via specific browsers?
WhiteOwlLion··on Stimulus check deposited into account of dead woman
Would it have been better for the IRS to validate the direct deposits to be more accurate, or was this best to get payments to people as quickly as possible?

Some potential issue I see if you don't do some exception analysis with direct deposits:

* filed jointly in 2018/2019 and spouse is deceased * couple is divorced? join in 2018, single file in 2019? * dependents no longer dependent (deceased, filing individually, etc) * direct deposit went to wrong account (wrong account number, tax preparer's bank account, etc) * bank account closed
