Wh1skey··on The Real Class War
The story of Rome’s fall is both complicated and relatively straightforward yet it eerily resembles America: The state became too big and chaotic; the influence of money and private interests corrupted public institutions; and social and economic inequalities became so large that citizens lost faith in the system altogether and gradually fell into the arms of tyrants and demagogues. If all of that sounds familiar, well, that’s because the parallels to our current political moment are striking. Edward Watts, a historian at the University of California San Diego, has just published a new book titled Mortal Republic that carefully lays out what went wrong in ancient Rome — and how the lessons of its decline might help save fledgling republics like the United States today.
Wh1skey··on Job loss predictions over rising minimum wages haven't come true
This is leftist propaganda. Increasing minimum wage pushes more people into poverty. The majority of people in poverty vote left.

Why does increasing minimum wage push more people in poverty?

Because an increase in expenses does not guarantee an increase in revenue. If your expenses increase while your revenues remain stagnant, you have to decrease your expenses in order to stay cash flow positive. To compensate, you decrease the number of hours employees receive. Less hours translate into less employees required. When the people who are earning minimum wage can't find a job because of the lack of hours available or can't receive enough hours from their employer, they are falling into poverty.

Wh1skey··on It’s Not Enough to Be Right – You Also Have to Be Kind
Thanks for your input. Often critical people mean the best despite coming off as mean. That said, I think it is best if you are close with these people first so you know they mean the best. I don't think it's natural for individuals to recognize when someone means well but is coming off as rude, particularly when rudeness is defined differently for everyone.

For the unversed, my family's dinners can come off as abrasive. The reality is we just enjoy talking to each other in an uncivilized manner.

Wh1skey··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
I think you hit the nail right on the head. Gartner's recent post on technology trends for 2020 points out democratization of tech and business expertise. More domains like medicine and law will follow.

Wh1skey··on The most successful people are just the luckiest, a new computer model confirms
I don’t understand this line of thinking. My father worked a minimum wage job most of his life and was able to retire a multi-millionaire simply because he saved and invested his disposable income. Most people can become wealthy but they choose to drive fancy cars and go to the movie theaters instead then complain how unlucky they are. That’s simply not true. If people are lucky because they realized wealth was attainable then yes, the most successful people are lucky.

Wh1skey··on Employer health plans are getting pricier and skimpier
Entry-level teachers earn over $40,000 according to Payscale. Median income for the lower class is about $25,000. Anecdotally, it's not unreasonable to become a millionaire in real estate by the time you retire on a teachers salary.

Wh1skey··on The gig economy is quietly undermining a century of worker protections
Working conditions a century ago were very different than they are today. Worker protections were initiated to balance the scales between employees and employers. Since then, living conditions have improved ten-fold. The gig economy is an effective solution that supports both employees and employers. The economy would be performing less optimally without it.
