Roast

Spends so much time talking about EV charging that they probably have range anxiety while walking Claims to be security-focused but probably still uses 'password123' for their coffee machine So Swiss they probably organize their HN bookmarks with the precision of a Geneva watch

WelcomeShorty··on Want to start hacking?
Hosting multiple 100's of internally build complex services tends to enlarge the attack space quite drastically.

Where I agree most bugs are self inflicted, there are plenty found in acquired software too.

WelcomeShorty··on Want to start hacking?
I am not at liberty to dox him :) Asked him but he pervers his relative anonymity.
WelcomeShorty··on The Best iPhone
Thanks, will give the "unlock with a mask on" feature a shot.
WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: At which moment did you realise that you are built for computer science?
The father of my (still) best friend bought a Sinclair ZX81 in 1982.

After observing his attempts to get "the thing" to do whatever he had in mind I started asking questions. He soon lost his patience and handed me the BASIC manual. It took me a couple of hours to get the formatting & meaning and then it happened. Like what some people describe as love at first sight, I lost all interest in everything and everybody I had cared about, JUST wanting to spend time and dedicate my adolescent brain to coding.

40 Years later, while spending my whole working live at a desk, I've seen many colleagues with back, neck, shoulder & arm problems. I never had any issues. That was the moment I knew I was build for this work.

As a motorcyclist I can not even use FaceID with a full face helmet and typing my access phrase is not an option either so I can only use touchID.
WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Should a professional software dev know how many bits go in a byte?
Should a programmer also know about FS block sizes? About ethernet size? About Multithreading? Memory access bandwidth? CPU architecture? Stored procedures in a DB? Current encryption schemes?

I would say it depends totally on the tasks of the coder. If you fiddle around with some ASP: NO. If you are squeezing every last bit for Netflix performance: YES.

Our domain is so incredibly huge, deep, wide & divers that I do not expect regular coders to be familiar with most details.

WelcomeShorty··on Want to start hacking?
One of our most prolific bug bounty hunters did exactly that. And what is even more impressive / exotic is how he finds the bugs. With "just" a browser and very little Burping.

Anecdotical, but it happens.

WelcomeShorty··on Tell HN: Today I made my first “bucks” on the web
Reminds me of my first ever Google check (of ads on a site I made) I received, what a joy!

And since I am based in Europe, cashing that was difficult so I framed it :)

Congrats on your journey.

WelcomeShorty··on A little story about the `yes` Unix command
A solution that requires the rules to be amended is obviously very creative!

Impressive out of the box thinking.

WelcomeShorty··on Electric Cars – fuel duty and road tax: how to replace £35B annual revenue
Same issue here in Switzerland. I am sure this will popup in all countries that have stimulated these EVs via tax benefits.

Just bought mine (Audi e-tron) and am happily surprised by all the subsidies and rebates, but it is clear that does not scale.

WelcomeShorty··on VanMoof’s team of ‘bike hunters’ appears to succeed where the city doesn’t
A-GPS == Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to speed up start-up times of GPS-based positioning systems.

Basically it uses an internet connection to find the satellites positions and not having to calculate them their selfs.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: Which VPS provider will survive the coming winter?
If you are seriously worried about the electrical power situation in Europe this winter, I would assume your priorities would focus on the well being of your family first?
WelcomeShorty··on Blackmail attempt left a Houston restaurant bombarded with 1-star reviews
Friend of mine runs a bar, he loves these 1 stars (does not care for walk-ins, it is a very much regulars only place) and we regularly check them out.

One of the best is a person who wrote: "Shitty service, never been there" and it their only review.

WelcomeShorty··on Ultra-flat timepiece, the RM UP-01 Ferrari, is 1.75 millimetres thick watch
Well, thank you. Now I have an new object (OCW-S100-1AJF) of my desire that I need to pursue :)

Interesting to see these prices "all over the place" but yours is indeed a good average.

WelcomeShorty··on Switzerland moves ahead with underground autonomous cargo delivery
That FAQ answers nearly all questions I had, and where asked on this page.

Thank you for that!

WelcomeShorty··on Norwegian Meteorological Institute has an excellent free weather API
Interestingly only the spoken text makes that mistake, the subtitles are correctly stating 30.000 meters.
WelcomeShorty··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
I would go as far as saying that company's "mission statements" are in fact the inverse of what they do.

It always portrays the image they would like to have and by default do not, otherwise there would be no reason to communicate it so prominently.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: What's the coolest website you know?
https://james.darpinian.com/satellites/#

Shows you satellites that will be visible from your position in the coming hours / days.

Incredibly cool tech stack too.

WelcomeShorty··on Some languages pay closer attention to family ties than others
What I do not understand is why Dutch is the only language that has two words for "family", one describing the parents and their children (gezin) and the other all relatives (family).

Please proof me wrong.

WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: How do I stop being used?
Old man here, and I read the threat, ignored it, went for lunch but I could not stop thinking about your question...

Dude, look at your responses here in this threat. You have said YES to each and every proposal. You have assigned yourself at least 20 hours of work, how is that going to fit into your tight schedule? You know it: it will not.

Just read back your own answers and you will see what your problem is. It might even lead you to the "you specific" answer.

I mean this very positive.

WelcomeShorty··on Cost of ultra-rapid EV charging increases by almost 50%
Anecdotical but here am I: one phone call to the company that manages the rentals where we live and bang, next month our charger will be installed where they pick up the infrastructure costs, we just pay for the outlet.

Looking forward to our first e car, which will be delivered in august.

WelcomeShorty··on Open call – your field recordings of obsolete sounds wanted
How does licensing work? Can I use a sound effect from BBC Sound Effects in my YouTube video?/ University project? You can read the terms of the licence here. However, as a general rule, as long as your usage remains non-commercial, you can use sound effects for free, crediting the BBC. If the usage becomes commercial - i.e. if you monetise it, sell it, or charge for access to it, or if it is advertising-funded or commercially sponsored, then that counts as commercial use, and you will need to license the recording from Pro Sound Effects.

"it’s an electric motorcycle with a foot-operated charging crank."
WelcomeShorty··on Ask HN: How many computers you got?
For me, 1 iMac (24-inch, M1, 2021).

And a couple of Raspis for more invasive stuff that I do (red teaming).

Less is more, yes I am old.

WelcomeShorty··on How to professionally say
Being Dutch might influence my take, but I love the no BS communication in Israel. What you describe as troublesome cuts both ways BTW. You are allowed to be as direct. Got no time? Say so. Got other priorities? Say so. Just be clear and to the point and do not waste the callers time with an elaborate story.

The explanation I got was that no one has time to beat around the bush since every single day might be your last.

That was 30 years ago when things where a lot less safe than it is now.

WelcomeShorty··on The Spanish PM and the defence minister were infected by Pegasus (in Spanish)
Thing is, these "specially hardened" devices are... a pain at best.

Nearly all VIP's insist on at least have their private phone as well, if not simply refusing to carry / use the issued devices.

WelcomeShorty··on More Users Flock to Mastodon After Musk's Twitter Acquisition Bid
Just like a year ago or so when people left WhatsApp for Signal.

I did and am still missing the interaction with 98% of my contacts.

WelcomeShorty··on High-Security Mechanical Locks (2020)
Changing the locks to my house / apartment is the first thing I do for us, my parents and our kids.

Personally I most of the time choose the Abloy Protec2, since I love the technology and the keys too.

I never understood "security people" who would spend a week hardening their OS but did nothing about their locks.

If you want to "get into" the art of opening locks without violence (most of the time :) ) I would suggest attending a meeting of the fine folks of ToooL
