WanderPanda··on How to find a lost phone in a no-cell-coverage camping site?
Not to nitpick but I think you mean trilaterate ;)
WanderPanda··on Town Repeatedly Surveilled Man's Yard with Drone Without a Warrant
Sometimes I‘m wondering if this is the land of the free or rather the land of the Stasi HOAs
WanderPanda··on We have used too many levels of abstractions
I used to think that the historical development of a subject can not possibly be the best way to learn a new topic because it is so path dependent and random. But with experience I have seen that there are very few instances where educators mixed up the historical timeline of a subject and made it more easily absorbable. It still baffles me that this is even the case for abstract fields like math
WanderPanda··on ArXiv receives $10M for upgrades
Loads fast, except for the PDFs which load quite slowly
WanderPanda··on Peter Thiel was an FBI informant
Agreed but that is a very shallow set of requirements compared to what we have now
WanderPanda··on Peter Thiel was an FBI informant
Don‘t hate the player, hate the game!
WanderPanda··on Consortium launched to build the largest open LLM
I'm wondering if the interconnect between GPUs in this HPC which seems like a more traditional supercomputer good enough for LLM training?
WanderPanda··on Consortium launched to build the largest open LLM
At this point I'm pretty convinced that no new gigacorp will be emerge out of this generation of AI (LLM and vision models). OpenAI will have to continuously bring their A-Game to stay 6 months ahead of everyone else. There is durable moat that they could hide behind in sight as of now. Of course they would like to construct a regulatory moat but it doesn't seem like there is a clear majority for this.

I'm pretty sure and happy that this will probably turn out as a large consumer windfall. Actually comes right in time to counteract the strong inflationary forces that come with de-globalization and declining efficiency due to increasingly basing the economy on gov spending.

WanderPanda··on Consortium launched to build the largest open LLM
It will for sure be well versed in government overreach
WanderPanda··on Amazon reaches 10k Rivian electric delivery vans in US
They can also still buy it for free if/when it fails
WanderPanda··on Fuyu-8B: A multimodal architecture for AI agents
Why don‘t these benchmarks judge the likelihood of the example answer? Just taking the MAP predictions seems like a waste of information
WanderPanda··on Scientists discover links between Alzheimer's disease and gut microbiota
I know nothing about this but to me „highly processed“ seems like such a broad term that it seems unlikely that every form of processing is bad. Would be great if we could instead enumerated the handful worst offenders which would make it easier for people to see the causal relationship and adapt their behavior in a more fine-grained way
WanderPanda··on Scientists discover links between Alzheimer's disease and gut microbiota
I should have discovered earlier in my life that prescribing antibiotics is the doctors equivalent of „you don‘t get fired for buying ibm“.
WanderPanda··on Scientists discover links between Alzheimer's disease and gut microbiota
I think this doesn‘t mean diet can prevent it altogether let alone revert it
WanderPanda··on Hallucineted CVE against Curl: someone asked Bard to find a vulnerability
Copilot at present capabilities is already so valuable that not having it in some environment gives me the „disabledness feeling“ that I otherwise only get when vim bindings are not enabled. Absolute miracle technology! I‘m sure in the not too distant future we‘ll have have privacy preserving, open source versions that are good enough to not shovel everything over to openai
WanderPanda··on Nvidia, one of tech's hottest companies, is fine with remote work
If there was any entity that had enough power to enforce this worldwide I‘m sure companies would jump at and lobby like crazy. We are blessed that no such (Orwellian) entity exists (yet)
WanderPanda··on Nvidia, one of tech's hottest companies, is fine with remote work
It‘s like unions squeezing out more than market rates, it eventually renders the companies uncompetitive
WanderPanda··on RISC-V chip technology emerges as new battleground in US-China tech war
Tell them how china is using .cn! They didn’t even pull that trigger in case of .ru.

ICANN is the space laser that I hope they never discover they have

WanderPanda··on Productivity has grown faster in Western Europe than in America
in the end the hedonic treadmill will smooth it out anyways
WanderPanda··on Database Performance at Scale – A free book
I can‘t believe this is a thing in 2023! If this is faster, shouldn‘t the database do that transparently in the background?!
WanderPanda··on Database Performance at Scale – A free book
Isn‘t implementing joins in the application what microservices are all about?
WanderPanda··on MiniOS – a lightweight Linux distribution designed for USB drive
Thats why I love the minimap in VS code, it is basically an enlarged scrollbar!
WanderPanda··on New York City declares state of emergency amid flash floods
How do you come to this definite conclusion? Would this have been something like a two to three sigma event given no climate change? I highly doubt it
WanderPanda··on Rimac unveils SineStack, battery energy storage system
I like my conglomerates like my datastructures, directed and acyclic :p
WanderPanda··on Mistral 7B
„the automation“ is probably manual and not even deterministic
WanderPanda··on How to make history with LLMs and other generative models
So you are saying (human) personal assistants are not useful? I think many people disagree and most people would want to have one weren‘t it so expensive
WanderPanda··on How to make history with LLMs and other generative models
> So your assistant can't be trusted to summarize web pages

Under these circumstances people can't be trusted to summarized web pages either. Natural selection will weed out these "inapropriate" LLMs the same way inapropriate people are weeded out from e.g. companies by being fired. Models don't need to be perfect, just useful.

Next feat after blessing us with the cookie banner and an inferior plug: making iOS so unsafe that everyone has to use physical branches for banking again
WanderPanda··on CatalaLang/catala: Programming language for law specification
Would be so funny if all the compute moves from AI to finding loopholes in the programmatically defined law.
WanderPanda··on Arm IPO to kick off today
Until it becomes the users problem (e.g. PowerPC -> Intel -> ARM transitions)
