Vvector··on I am stepping down from Perl Steering Council and Core
But what he said is true. With all the focus on Perl 6, Perl 5 stagnated for nearly 20, with barely any improvements. Other languages came along and displaced Perl for many jobs.

No, Perl won't disappear any time soon. It still excels at a few things. And like Fortran and COBOL, Perl will also have a long life as a legacy language.

The "spring tide", the highest of the high tides, naturally occurs twice every 28 days. This is when the Sun, Earth and Moon are in a line. So the average wait would have been ~7 days.

Vvector··on Actually Portable Executable
Does ARM really have a performance advantage? Or is it the specific Apple customizations tailored to their use case?

Apple doesn't have to worry about 35 years of legacy architecture to support.

Scheduled sales are not required, only recommended. If an unscheduled sale is made, there might be insider trading issues, and might trigger an investigation. That said, it would be easy to argue the sale was due to public information, i.e. the stock going up 100x in 6 months.

Vvector··on Factorio 1.1 stable
But complexity =/= fun. Factorio shows that "simple gameplay" can lead to massive fun.

IMO, the AAA titles would be better if less time was spent on a bleeding edge physics system, and more time spent on other aspects.

One method is to preprocess the map, which then can greatly increase the accuracy of the A* heuristic.

Vvector··on The Remarkable Number 1/89 (2004)
Hardy and Srinivasa Ramanujan about interesting and uninteresting numbers, Hardy remarked that the number 1729 of the taxicab he had ridden seemed "rather a dull one", and Ramanujan immediately answered that it is interesting, being the smallest number that is the sum of two cubes in two different ways.

It's also not difficult to sue a company for unfair hiring/firing practices.

But if the employee is via third party, there is no hiring or firing involved, limiting the liability of the first company.

Vvector··on YouTubers are upscaling the past to 4K, but historians want them to stop
> If you've got a photo of someone whose hair was white from age, and you colourise it as blonde, you've made them look younger and maybe given them a hair colour they never had.

But what about the opposite? What if a B&W photo shows someone with white hair, but his hair was blonde. Now the colorized photo is more accurate than the B&W photo. I just don't think you can claim B&W is more accurate absolutely.

> If that person is wearing an air force uniform and you colourise it to look more like an army uniform

Do you understand that the typical consumer of this media cannot tell the difference between air force, and army uniforms from 100 years ago? Get people interested in history, then worry about the little details like the color of someone's hair or uniform.

Get out of your ivory tower and into the real world. Most people's knowledge of history is abysmal. History is boring, as it is taught in schools today.

"Altering primary documents..."

No one is altering the original documents. They still exist, right?

"actually less accurate (e.g. wrong color instead of no color)."

That's debatable. Why is "no color" more accurate? The world wasn't monochrome.

Vvector··on Trump to sign executive order on social media amid Twitter furor
> but counterpoint: who prosecutes the offenses?

CDA 230 protects Twitter against lawsuits for content their users post. Without 230, anyone who felt libeled (i.e. Joe Scarborough) could sue Twitter in civil court.

Vvector··on Trump to sign executive order on social media amid Twitter furor
It appears the route the Administration will take is removing CDA 230 protection status for Twitter. CDA 230 protects Twitter from being held legally responsible for hosting the comments of the users. Without the 230 shield, anyone could sue Twitter for a comment they didn't like. The cost of defending these lawsuits alone would bury Twitter in legal expenses.

IMO, such an executive order will be challenged in court, as there is no case law that supports the CDA 230 removal.

Tractors are bursty. They are heavily used at planting and harvesting. Farmers can't spend long periods of time recharging in the middle of planting season. And it would be too expensive to buy 12 hours of battery capacity for a couple times a year.

Gas still wins with a short refuel time.

Maybe the game is not for you. But you are way off base here. The Factorio team has built a very solid product here.

Microtrenching is becoming a thing, which is rapidly dropping the costs of installation. It's just a groove 1.5" wide and about 6" deep. Drop a couple of conduits in it, and back fill it. Vehicles can drive right over it during the process, no need to close lanes for multiple days.
