VoidWarranty··on A 'cold blob' in the Atlantic could be a sign of AMOC shutdown
"More nonsense. Our population isn't exploding, it's just big."

If graph not exponential, why exponential shaped? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

VoidWarranty··on Are you expected to run five Python type-checkers now?
A compiler is more efficient than an 8 layer llm lasagna stack of tools. Likewise, to stay on topic: a strictly typed language is better than running five python type checkers if you really want type checking.

Its more efficient to have a llm write in a strictly typed language than to duct tape guardrails(either tools or more llm work) after the fact. Depends on what you're building of course. I speak from an industry that ships large executables. (games)

VoidWarranty··on Are you expected to run five Python type-checkers now?
If I had said c++ would that have triggered you less?
VoidWarranty··on Are you expected to run five Python type-checkers now?
Its about limiting surface area.

The gymnastics people are putting their ops teams through in order to validate oceans of generated slop is insane. Just use Rust and half of that work goes away.

VoidWarranty··on Are you expected to run five Python type-checkers now?
Oops thank you, I did mean static. I should know better as I am a cpp fan. Updated.
VoidWarranty··on Are you expected to run five Python type-checkers now?
Dynamically typed languages are going to decline with the rise of AI coding.

Statically typed languages provide the determinism necessary to efficiently anchor probabalistic coding agents.

You can throw as much type checking at dynamic languages after the fact, but youre just going to burn energy (and tokens) doing what another language gets 'for free'.

VoidWarranty··on Yon – a topos-oriented language with a content-addressed lattice heap
This reads to me like someone's mania project. I wish OP the best and hope they can get some rest.
VoidWarranty··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
When it completed a task from the same amount of guidance and specifications that I would have spent on a Jr engineer. It did it faster and better.
VoidWarranty··on Meta enables ADB on deprecated Portal devices [video]
I always wondered how they messed portal up. It seemed so natural of a piece of hardware to fit into everything else they do. Tying it to horizon says all I need to know.
VoidWarranty··on C++: The Documentary
We're talking about different things.

Im talking about your own personal coding. You dont have to use the new things. You dont have to know them to decide to discard them. In fact, the criteria to discard something is to not know it. You generally shouldn't be using things you dont know anyway.

The fact that other people use things you do not know is not a reason to stress out about the dumb pace and direction c++ is moving in. It is possible to enjoy a life free from fomo about the c++ standards goalposts.

VoidWarranty··on C++: The Documentary
You don't have to use them. There's a handful of nice to haves in modern releases but its totally fine and sane to just ignore whatever the committee is distracted by at the moment.

Hell, if you wait long enough, they'll just deprecate it before you can care to bother.

VoidWarranty··on C++: The Documentary
Which is worse? std's mess or one you control? I'd take any random game engine's STL over std any day.
VoidWarranty··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
The reqs are likely a side effect of how the application is built and the fact that its made by a solo dev.

I find it more pleasant to do UI within the context of a video game renderer than to bother with ui libraries and native hooks.

You only have to deal with windows enough to get you a rendering context: then you can do everything in your walled garden.

VoidWarranty··on The Rich and Powerful Want to Live Forever. What If They Could?
Term limits.
VoidWarranty··on All 12 moonwalkers had "lunar hay fever" from dust smelling like gunpowder (2018)
Let's not be pedantic. Its quite obvious to anyone not living under a rock what "anti-vaccine" means.
VoidWarranty··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
I am a terrible person to ask. My employers get their money's worth from me: I genuinely like my work and regularly work more than 8hrs a day. I also work in a field with others who, with some exception, do the same, so its strange for me to see "normal people" clock out on the dot.
VoidWarranty··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
It absolutely is. The funding for it, not the product itself.
VoidWarranty··on Meta tells staff it will cut 10% of jobs
Hard to motivate people to work on things that destroy society. Money helps.

Want to see how motivated Meta employees are? Watch how fast their offices clear out at 5pm on the dot.

VoidWarranty··on Irony as Meta staff unhappy about running surveillance software on work PCs
Same.

I assumed this happens on any employer machine anyway. If not specific mouse movement and keystrokes then file access and connected devices. I honestly don't understand the outrage.

VoidWarranty··on All 12 moonwalkers had "lunar hay fever" from dust smelling like gunpowder (2018)
Careful. The venn diagram bubble depicting your statement overlaps heavily with the anti-vaccine bubble.

Its a bit naieve to claim that cleaning one's home will result in an extinction of enough microbes so as to be threatening to our immune system.

VoidWarranty··on The Death of Character in Game Console Interfaces
You're right about the reqs. A lot of the menu screen behaviors were traditions borrowed from arcade games and big box demo kiosks. The idea is that your game must do "something" if idle for a long period of time without someone officially "starting" it.
VoidWarranty··on The cult of vibe coding is dogfooding run amok
Sometimes I think we're being argued against by LLMs. Critique of your example while missing the entire point of it.
VoidWarranty··on Iranian missile blitz takes down AWS data centers in Bahrain and Dubai
Not to be insensitive about the humanitarian and economic situation, but, I am curious why there are data centers in that region at all? It just seems horribly inefficient from a cooling and electricity standpoint. Not to mention water.

My pessimistic assumption is that Amazon said "yes" to handouts from regional government efforts to be relevant in tech, and that those data centers dont really matter to anyone but local politicians and monarchs who believe they have a seat at the table.

VoidWarranty··on An unstoppable mushroom is tearing through North American forests
Despite many people such as you and I yelling at random hippies and hillbillies online, they continue to call everything "morels". Reread my comment again: it is true that people colloquially misname dangerous species. I cannot help this. I can only point this fact out.
VoidWarranty··on An unstoppable mushroom is tearing through North American forests
Superstition/caution.

They aren't 'difficult' to cook. They are dangerous to eat if uncooked (and thus undercooked).

While true morels themselves can be dangerous while uncooked, there are similar looking species that are both less and more dangerous.

Species of Gyromitra or "false morels" like Verpa Bohemica will commonly all be called "morels": both as an intentional cultural colloquialism or simple misidentification.

Depending on which hemisphere you live in, some Gyromitra species may be more dangerous than true morels. They can also be more dense and harder to cook thoroughly.

Most mushroom species will cause an upset stomach if undercooked. Drying is an effective way of reducing both dangerous and uncomfortable compounds. It's suggested for morels out of an abundance of caution, but it is not a necessary step.

(Note that not all compounds are destroyed! "Magic mushrooms" are famously traded dry for example!)

The advise to add an additional preparation step also increases the chance someone will notice the wrong species hiding in their ingredients. Undesirable species can have overlapping habitats and climates so its not uncommon for a careless or ignorant forager to pick the wrong thing.

VoidWarranty··on Epic Games to cut more than 1k jobs as Fortnite usage falls
The store is quite a cost. They also have a billion engineers working in every different direction contributing to UE.
VoidWarranty··on The AI coding divide: craft lovers vs. result chasers
Both claims are hyperbole.

Reality remains in the middle, but there are plenty of examples of either extreme right now.

VoidWarranty··on Wisconsin communities signed secrecy deals for billion-dollar data centers
Wisconsin runs mostly on coal power plants. It's a terrible place to build data centers.

My guess is that the locals have proven themselves easily dazzled by the contract dollar amounts and arent thinking about the future. Remember the FoxConn debacle? That was WI.

VoidWarranty··on Jonathan Blow has spent the past decade designing 1,400 puzzles
I think you're projecting your own biases here.

They "can't help" make the conversation about Trump because they have a public image to maintain.

If your image and following are on BSky, then it's not an echo chamber to address the crowd in kind with its nature. That's just good branding.
