Vintila··on Australian universities are accused of trading free speech for cash
International students actually pay about 4x what a domestic student pay [1].

Vintila··on A Behind the Scenes Take on Lithium-Ion Battery Prices
Is there anyway to confirm they are legit Samsung cells? Batteries seem too ripe for counterfeits.
Vintila··on World's oldest spider discovered in Australian outback
Maybe killed by one of these https://imgur.com/a/kJtaftu

Not sure what they're called but I see them dragging huntsman spiders around.

They don't look as bad as the tarantula hawks but they sound like a helicopter.

Vintila··on Apple faces lawsuits after admitting it slows down aging iPhones
Maybe the attitude to run the battery low before charging it comes from NiCd batteries which have the so called memory effect [1].

Could education be the answer? I've never bought an iPhone, do they include a few paragraphs about proper battery care?

Vintila··on Intel vs GlobalFoundries at the leading edge
Slightly off topic but, how do they create the lithography masks with such tiny and precise features?
Vintila··on Show HN: BigQuery dataset: 22M FCC comments on net neutrality
Presumably they must have come from somewhere, anyone know where?
Vintila··on Patreon Sucks
Interesting.... at the bottom of the page it has © Dave Cahill [1] with a link to another website [2].

The two websites have similar navbar and footer.

I think he means the well-ordering principle
Vintila··on Google Site Search will be completely shut down by April 1, 2018
and G Suite (formally Google Apps for Business)
Vintila··on The man who sold the world on credit cards
I'd add a caveat to point 1, it is only a huge saving if you were going to buy whatever it is anyway.

Has anyone done studies on the effects of cashback on consumer behavior?

Vintila··on First they came for the Iranians
Genuine question, is there an anti-muslim immigration policy in japan or some other force at play?
Vintila··on Sharing National Security Letters with the Public
I would also like to know the probability of indictment given an NSL.
Vintila··on PoisonTap, a $5 tool that invades password-protected computers
Could restrict it to HID class USB devices.
Vintila··on If Prisoners Ran Prisons
How about measuring the prison instead, reform more crooks, the guards get a pay bonus. However, knowing how incentive schemes are normally gamed, they will probably resort to lobotomising the inmates.
Vintila··on Microsoft Kills off ISVs by Foisting Its Own Products That Are No Better
The only AV I have love for is MBAM, not the real-time protection but the plain old system scan.
Vintila··on General questions about the Airbnb Community Commitment
I feel like this in argument which has been had so many times on HN but >They are extending 'their website and business' into private property.

They offer a service with terms, you either accept those terms or you don't no one is forcing you to use their service.

On the matter of enforcement, I agree this would be near impossible to enforce in all but the most obvious of cases of discrimination.

Vintila··on General questions about the Airbnb Community Commitment
Yes, Airbnb can do what they want with their property, namely their website and business. If you don't like it then they even outline what you can do in the linked article.

This knife cuts both ways.

Vintila··on The new “Rich Kids” social media app has a membership fee of $1,000 a month
Doesn't this restrict the rich kids to competition to other rich kids? I would've thought the fun part was being a big fish in a small pond.
Vintila··on Appropriate Uses for SQLite
Slightly off-topic but I love their sql docs[1], those diagrams are just beautiful.

Vintila··on Citibank IT guy deliberately wiped routers, shut down 90% of firm’s US networks
Not completely solvable no, but implementing four-eyes authorisation is a decent measure.
Vintila··on A Course in Machine Learning
maybe we teach the machines to write them
Vintila··on The “Cobra Effect” that is disabling paste on password fields
Security at the expense of usability comes at the expense of security.

Shamelessly stolen from SE.

Vintila··on Why Does Software Rot?
Similarly, there are no bugs in code that isn't written.
Vintila··on Takata’s Air Bag Crisis
They probably have debt aswell.
Vintila··on The MOnSter 6502
Someone want to calculate the area needed to make a discrete current-gen processor?
Vintila··on ThingieQuery: $19 SQL IDE for Excel
Relying entirely on client-side validation isn't a great idea.

Also your site doesn't seem to be in production mode, can still see the stack traces on exceptions.

Looks like someone went wild with the api

Vintila··on Hacking industrial vehicles from the internet
At least their product page doesn't have some marketing wank about their security. In fact it has no mention of security whatsoever, which is apt because it doesn't seem to have any!
Vintila··on Mobile phones are 'cooking' men's sperm
I'm convinced that modern briefs are mens' version of high-heels -- Worn only for their appearance yet totally dysfunctional. We've all been duped by hot CK guys in tight pants.
Vintila··on How to Safely Store Your Users' Passwords in 2016
I'd been considering something similar, never really made a PoC though.

How about this: User provides their public key when they signup. To authenticate, server produces a nonce and sends to the client, client signs the nonce with private key and sends the result, server verifies signature with public key.
