Vilian··on I'm starting a social club to solve the male loneliness epidemic
There are different ways to cope with loneliness, some find ways to fix it, others post assholes comments on people's projects trying to fix it
Vilian··on Untrusted chatbot AI between you & the internet is a disaster waiting to happen
They don't even need to lock then, no one outside of tech are going to know how to switch AI provider, they are going to use their phone/computer default, be that google Gemini, Apple AI or Microsoft Copilot, same thing with browsers
Vilian··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app

Vilian··on xAI to pay telegram $300M to integrate Grok into the chat app
Signal and matrix probably
Vilian··on The Future of Flatpak
You van havê other repos in flatpak than flathub, so in theory the devs can package their app on their repo and tell the user to install it
Vilian··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
Mozilla ≠ firefox
Vilian··on KDE is finally getting a native virtual machine manager called “Karton”
The thing is that Gnome Boxes is user a lot and it's still buggy, the KDE one is going to be less used, it would really manage to be less buggy?, let's wait and see I guess
Vilian··on Lufthansa plane flown by autopilot after pilot faints in cockpit
A button that don't shows up if you have privacy enabled in firefox
Vilian··on Tesla has yet to start testing its robotaxi without driver weeks before launch
To rob a self driving bus you put a cone on front of it, try that with a bus driver
Vilian··on Tesla has yet to start testing its robotaxi without driver weeks before launch
It's much easier, secure and cheaper to pay a bus driver, it's a political issue not a technical one
Vilian··on Bus stops here: Shanghai lets riders design their own routes
Did you get hurt by a bus comming here?
Vilian··on What if humanity forgot how to make CPUs?
Hopeful they forget about JavaScript too, that would be a good thing to forget
Vilian··on Curl: We still have not seen a valid security report done with AI help
Curl has dozen of garbage bug reports made using AI where even the author can't point where the bug if, they answer with "the AI said so it's true"
Vilian··on Memory-safe sudo to become the default in Ubuntu
An already existing and tested C software gonna have less bugs than a new rust rewrite
Vilian··on Memory-safe sudo to become the default in Ubuntu
The Lennart post about it explain it https://mastodon.social/@pid_eins/112353324518585654

He was comparing to "normal" sudo, but sudo-rs have the same problems he highlighted anyway

Vilian··on Memory-safe sudo to become the default in Ubuntu
Nice technical argument, did Lennart bite you while you where sleeping?
Vilian··on Memory-safe sudo to become the default in Ubuntu
Podman has systemd inside, you can run0 in it
Vilian··on Internet usage pattern during power outage in Spain and Portugal
Sadly some new models are removing that function :/
Vilian··on Why Flatpak apps use so much disk space on Linux
Really? Are you saying that an OS for a console is a good substitute for a desktopOS, at that point i'm gonna argue that the best OS is the xbox360 and we all should be using it
Vilian··on Why Flatpak apps use so much disk space on Linux
It's depends, flatpak is a lot more portable, it bundle everything, the libraries are shared, thing that appimage can't, it automatically updates, it's more secure, and have a stronger sandbox, and it integrate better with the system
Vilian··on Why Flatpak apps use so much disk space on Linux
The same libraries are shared between flatpak apps, and everything deduplicated, so I don't thinknso, but someone would have to test
Vilian··on Why Flatpak apps use so much disk space on Linux
I can change those permission directly in the KDE settings, with the need to download flatseal, others DE need to implement their own
Vilian··on Why Flatpak apps use so much disk space on Linux
You can allow an application complete access to a folder or your home directory, use flatseal for that
Vilian··on Why Flatpak apps use so much disk space on Linux
...that's literally what flatpak does?, and it deduplicate everything too
Vilian··on All four major web browsers are about to lose 80% of their funding
Isn't that exactly what chromium is, or were supposed to be, companies invest in it, the problem is that google simply invest more
Vilian··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
At that point i would switch to thunderbird or something
Vilian··on Ask HN: When will Wayland eclipse X?
Hardware survey shows more than 50% wayland usage a few months ago, it harder to have a correct survey, how much of those 80% is just legacy systems that don't update anymore, or don't matter?, like a car dashboard, it uses x11 but noone would count it, or make applications for it, the correctly measure is limiting it to desktop use, and places where update and new applications care about
Vilian··on Linux in Excel
they don't care more about API the same way the cared in Vista days https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2004/06/13/how-microsoft-lost...
Vilian··on Why did Windows 7 log on slower for months if you had a solid color background?
Hibernate is a lot harder to make work correctly, and can lead to problems in more niche cases, so it's not a guarantee
Vilian··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
Houses have water tank that work as buffer for when the water stop, couldn't residential batteries work the same way?, it could detect drops in voltage and stop charging, so even if the grid is unstable in a black out, the residential isn't going to light up immediately, or only the houses without batteries
