People get upset by these “whataboutism” posts but they’re perfectly legitimate points to make. It’s good to interrogate the media that we consume and to consider the conditions that would lead to an article like this being produced and published.
Side note, there’s been a flood of anti-China content on this website lately, it’s odd.
There’s an unsettling lack of skepticism from the commenters here. If you do the most surface level digging on this, you will find that the author of the study is a shill for anti-China propaganda, usually with a guise of anti-communism. Writing like this is all produced through Washington thinktanks and then pushed to media outlets en masse. Given the source of money and political bent of this material, it’s hard for me to earnestly believe it.
I have a feeling that victimsofcommunism.org is probably not the most reliable source out there. There is an entire Western industry built around producing anti-communism and anti-China spam, much of which seems to have a dubious relationship with the truth. This appears to be one of those sources.
That “flow state” you describe is honestly the thing I seek out most when playing games. It’s hard to find a game that generates the feeling for me, but once I do find one, I’m in heaven. The most recent game that managed to do this for me was Elden Ring, and I love it for that.
There is a fine line between addiction and simply enjoying a hobby. You need to identify where that is. We have a finite amount of time to work with in our lives, and how you allocate that is up to you. Once your hobbies start infringing on things you feel you should be prioritizing (e.g. friends, family, career), it’s time to reevaluate how much time you spend with that hobby. It’s entirely possible to have a healthy relationship with video games while still keeping up with your other obligations, you just need to be cognizant of your time.
Can you explain yourself? 13G is the form that passive investors fill out. 13D is a more detailed form intended for activist investors. What is your special knowledge that everyone is getting wrong that you’re alluding to?
It is genuinely interesting to me. All of the uproar about “free speech” has been confusing to me. Who are these people being censored? What are they saying?
You could claim jealousy, but that’s reductive. Elon Musk annoys a lot of people, for a plethora of reasons. It’s pretty easy to find wide ranging genuine criticism of him from numerous perspectives, if you want to actually understand. Or you could hand wave it all away and claim jealousy I guess, just know it’s a lazy explanation.
People can’t escape their ideologies. This website is as tribal as anywhere else (actually, honestly worse than the median). Accepting that Tesla fosters and promotes a racist work environment is unthinkable for ideologues of a certain stripe.
You’re not going to get in trouble on Twitter for stating a general fact. However, you will sometimes get in trouble if you’re using thinly veiled talking points that are intended to deny the claimed identity of millions of people. It’s mean spirited and hurts others. Hopefully this helps you understand why it’s a contentious thing to post.
Do you have a source for that claim? It sounds like nonsense. My parents divorced when I was 6 or 7 years old, and I’m pretty sure it would be unimaginably more traumatic if one of them had died instead.
This is the answer. You can read all of the pontification and prognostication you like, but ultimately you’re gambling if you’re trying to time the market. You have incomplete information and you will not be able to respond appropriately, you’ll instead be rolling the dice. You can do that if you like, but you’ll be better served by regularly investing in broad market index funds and not thinking too hard about it.
Thanks for this. I’ve been having issues with CD Baby emailing me spam for months. Their unsubscribe button/process doesn’t work at all. Glad to have an avenue to report them for this bad behaviour.
Yes identifying the exact “calories out” number would be a monumental task. That said, we have a very strong understanding of the ballpark amount of calories it takes to keep your body alive and working for a single day - it’s around 1800, give or take a few hundred calories depending on a few features that you mentioned. With this in mind, it is simple to run a calorie deficit, even if you don’t know exactly how much that number is.
You're baffled that the person suggesting that creating a racially pure ethnostate is a reasonable idea worthy of discussion is being downvoted? Really? This was literally, not in any sense being hyperbolic, the goal of Hitler and the Nazis. What baffles me is how this talking point has apparently become normalized enough not to be immediately shouted down by every user on this website.
You're being downvoted because you're being a racist buffoon. Yes, there is genetic variation across traits, this is a fact. That said, we are all heavily influenced by our environments and to discount this incredibly formative factor of all human life is ridiculous. Culture, poverty, exposure to crime, and endless cycle of poor parenting, whatever it may be - there are a million things that can and DO get in the way of someone succeeding far, far before their genetics.
Cool article - though I have to wonder how they measure team performance, given that it is our all important response variable.
In modern animal breeding, our goal is typically to improve some trait through genetic means. We extract the animal's DNA, sequence it, and compare it across many different families in order to evaluate how that individual differs from others and how its genetics affects our trait of interest. We call this trait our 'phenotype', and in animal breeding, phenotype is king. We can do all of the analysis we want, but if our phenotype is inaccurately measured or uninformative, it's all a waste of time.
I've been loving Pandas used alongside Seaborn as well. It's really just so easy to manipulate/visualize my data (and make it look gorgeous) with the combo.
