“The "dark forest" hypothesis presumes that any space-faring civilization would view any other intelligent life as an inevitable threat…”
> not because they wouldn't love to meet us and form positive-sum interactions
Not sure where you got this adaptation from.
Also keep in mind it could be as simple as that they had a better candidate.

I don’t think this is substantively different from cooking temperature, so I’m not trusting that either.
Second, “if Google can’t make it work no one can” is also a myth. YouTube, even the idea of which came after Google video was already launched, is a good example of that.
And, of course, Google+…
Here's my take: these forums will drive good writers away or at least discourage them, leaving discourses the worse for it. What they really end up saying — "we don't care whether you use an LLM, just remove the damn em-dash" — indicates it's not a forum hosting riveting discussions in the first place.
Of course the steam engine was revolutionary. That doesn’t excuse or legitimize the nonsense.
“Ratchet, ratchet, and bingo,” as they say.
It's also interesting that the pricing is in terms of "interactions" rather than tokens. I don't believe I've seen that before.
But 男子 (boys) is a homophone of 団子 (a sweet dumpling) and the entire phrase 花より団子 is an aphorism for preferring practicality over aesthetics.
Did you understand that? Of course. Yet, a joke that has to be explained loses something of itself.
Weirdly, I am fluent in Japanese, Urdu, and English. I believe that while translations have their value, they always fail to do justice – even when translated by the author! A poem is, like a joke, largely about what it affects in the audience, and such an evanescent quality is nigh impossible to preserve completely in translation, or even in a retelling.
This is why I was rather upset when Youtube began silently auto-translating audio for me with no indication of it not being the original audio (it's especially bad if you look at shorts and are multilingual...you could easily mistake what was a catchy Japanese song for English AI slop).
Thanks.
> its not nearly as fabulous an investment as you are suggesting
In case it wasn't clear, I'm not trying to give investment advice (my comment is very focused on what happened, not what will happen). I am however, implying that a lot of people made bad financial decisions by misapprehending their situation and consuming the wrong "content". I believe many people can be spared significant regret if they double-check, disbelieve, or replace much of what they’re told by the internet.
Also: It's a leveraged investment for most people (mortgage). If you put in 20% and your house tripled in value over the last ten years (which is what happened in SF & Seattle afaict), you make an annualized return of 27% (for a whopping 1070% total, i.e. more than 10x), after accounting for your payments (with realtor fees the number is slightly less but not meaningfully). Meanwhile as a renter your rent would likely have at least doubled over the same period, doubling the size of the nonrecoupable leak in your financial hull.
That's 1070% as opposed to 224%, i.e. 10x vs. 2x in the S&P. This is the reality of what has happened over the past 10 years, by the way, I am not using hypotheticals. Do note that home values tripling in price over the last decade is not common, even among these expensive cities, you have to be looking at specific types of housing in "luxury" neighborhoods.
TL;DR: Location matters. A LOT.
In any case, if you really believe a disclaimer makes it okay for Google to display blatant misinformation in a first-party capacity, we have little to discuss.
Really!?
The response could’ve been better worded but you can see how no one would want to moderate a community that makes it a habit to disparage specific people outside of a good faith discussion.
