VB6_Foreverr··on Why we are unlikely to ever leave the solar system.
I was watching a documentary about the wright brothers recently and right up until they actually did it many bright people doubted it would ever be possible to have powered human flight.

Like it always has, something will come along that will change everything.

I got this message when I followed the link to his vbaclasses

Your computer or another computer on your network is compromised with a virus. This allows online criminals to use it as part of a botnet to send spam and attack websites.

Am I the only one?

VB6_Foreverr··on What Makes A Great Programmer?
Reading this reminds me of a quote about the charge of the light brigade

C'est magnifique, mais ce n'est pas la guerre, c'est de la folie

So it's like we humans have made up time and it's acting as a mental block to truly understanding what's really going on. Time as a man-made metaphor gives a meaning to our world in a way analogous to religion?

The above thoughts are purely my real-time ramblings, I am clueless but interested :)

When something is frozen is there still movement at the subatomic level (electrons orbiting etc) or does that cease too?
VB6_Foreverr··on [dead]
If I am understanding what's written correctly why can't it just say that there are only 3 dimensions, ie the ones you learned in primary school when you were doing volume.
VB6_Foreverr··on Inmates forced to farm gold online in Chinese prisons
I may give out about something in my country and say how it's so much better in that other country but if someone from there is here and does the same I feel like saying it's a wonder they didn't stay there so if it's so bloody good.
VB6_Foreverr··on Bosnian Serbs Military Leader Ratko Mladić Arrested Today
The only issue that requires proof is identity. Once established then is it really necessary that this man go through an expensive trial and subsequent imprisonment? I think he should be publicly executed in Srebrenica. Wouldn't that send out a better message to others tempted to follow a similar path than the courtof justice does? Today, coincidentally, is the anniversary of the last public execution in England http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Barrett_%28Fenian%29
VB6_Foreverr··on Playboy bypasses Apple's App Store, makes a web app instead
I followed your link and it said the reason the picture of Lenna (from a 1972 edition of Playboy) became significant was for its first use in 1973 in an academic conference paper on image processing.

Yet it also states that Woody Allen also used the image in the film Sleepers in the same year.

Woody Allen hardly got the idea from reading academic conference literature.

Makes me think that the image must have made an enormous impact on its release in 1972. Makes you wonder what was cropped, although her face is very nice

Not as pretty as the Saturn V rocket. I always get a thrill watching footage of one of those blasting off.
VB6_Foreverr··on Cranking
One of the points David Allen makes in his book that I didn't 'get' first time round was : "It's important to get reminders of everything big and small recorded in a system outside your head not because everything is equally important but because everything isn't."
VB6_Foreverr··on Cranking
I don't think there's a way of doing that, in gmail anyway. Closest I can see is to take the url of the email and paste it into the calendar
VB6_Foreverr··on Cranking
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that Merlin Mann got the name for his site '43 folders' from David Allen's 'Getting things done' book. I have been trying to implement GTD techniques for some time. The 43 folder idea appealed to me hugely at first, on a first reading of that book it was the single most seductive technique. I am still using GTD but I've dumped the 43 folders. At the same time I have come to see the value of strategies in the book that at first reading didn't seem all the helpful. The reason I dumped the 43 folders is that I don't think it's suitable for personal organisation. The problem was that with a folder (for every day in the current month = 31) and one for every month (12), the daily folders were mostly empty. This meant that there wasn't an incentive to check them every day and then you end up forgetting to do it and then you miss stuff. The technique might work well for a business though. Now I just store references to 'incubating' items in my phone calendar (which is synced with my google calendar). Sorry for going off on a tangent.
VB6_Foreverr··on Why Microsoft bought Skype
He's expressing an opinion except his style is to state his opinion as fact without providing any evidence at all.

It's not worth reading.

Now if he had predicted this purchase, that would be different.

VB6_Foreverr··on Ask HN: Why Would I Write Web Apps In Anything Besides PHP?

It's just about the worst excuse going if your apps are of any value whatsoever

I can relate relate to the thickness of a hair but I can't relate to the size of a red blood cell so... If Mr Bohr ia an average sized 1.8 metres tall and is only a little smaller than the diameter of the hair after the first shrinkage that means that after the second shrinkage where he's 100 nm tall that the hair is about 1000 times wider than that. I calculate it would take him a good 20 minutes to walk past the end of the hair and in his world this chip is about the size of a pool table

VB6_Foreverr··on Game developer David Braben creates a USB stick PC for $25
I know I shouldn't query downvotes but can the downvoter(s) explain how this will address the problem he outlined (ie schools teaching people how to use MS Office rather than teaching computer science)
VB6_Foreverr··on Game developer David Braben creates a USB stick PC for $25
If pretty much every home has a PC, if the schools teaching ICT have computers then how is this going to make people 'learn computers' better? Would kids be more turned on by this than by, say, developing apps for android phones?

A further insight into the type of man OBL was.

I heard BBC reporter John Simpson describe his one encounter with OBL which occurred in 1989 in Afghanistan during the war against the Soviets. Simpson was interviewing some Mujahadeen when OBL rode in on a horse and tried to persuade them to shoot Simpson and his crew. They refused.
