Tyrannosaur··on Orange Pi Neo Coming as a Ryzen 7 and Linux Powered Handheld Device
If by "held in hands" you actually mean "sit on top of your lap" then you may understand why laptops aren't called handhelds.
Tyrannosaur··on Jones Act Contributions to Offshore Wind Difficulties
While Justice Clarence Thomas suggested a rethinking of Lawrence v Texas in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, it hasn't yet been overturned.

Tyrannosaur··on Computer Engineering for Babies (2021)
I can attest my copy has the same error- the blue light page is the NOT gate, which doesn't require a button press. Perhaps a dying battery or decalibrating light sensor thinks it's on the NOT page?
Tyrannosaur··on My cat water fountain comes with a spicy USB power adapter
That doesn't make sense though. The fuses aren't to protect the load; they are to protect the circuit. It's up to whatever device you are plugging in to not draw more current than it can handle.

If I have a 3 Watt doohickey, I don't go looking around to find a 0.025A socket, I plug it in to my 15A wall socket and everything works great.

Tyrannosaur··on Wealth Systems in RPGs
Blades in the Dark does a hybrid model: for small things (the example given is bribing a doorman) the player rolls a fortune roll with their lifestyle quality.

For larger things, there's coin. One coin is "A full purse of silver pieces. A week’s wages." Coin can be spent/sacrificed for significantly larger things than day-to-day expenditures.

A character banks coin in their stash which determines their lifestyle quality and, eventually, their quality of retirement.

It feels much more like a stat to me, but has some of the flexibility of a resource as well.

Tyrannosaur··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
Even if you want to differentiate "who" and "whom", "Whom were you speaking with?" is more natural.
Tyrannosaur··on Kyoto Statement on End-to-End Encryption
A publicly documented part of a system that explicitly states that its purpose is to compromise encryption and privacy may not technically be a "backdoor", but that's a distinction without a difference.

Tyrannosaur··on Solve your big problems by solving your real problem
It is possible, and often appropriate, to simultaneously denounce both a system that is easily abused and people who abuse such systems.
Tyrannosaur··on The fertilizer shortage will persist in 2023
For exactly the same reason the river exists in the first place. Why does the water flow to the ocean and not just sink into the ground?
Tyrannosaur··on OsmAnd 4.3 for Android devices
Every so often I try to use OsmAnd again for navigation. It's... sufficient for most things. But I can't understand why it still fails at a basic address search. Why can't I just copy-paste an address into the search bar? I'm not going to individually search the state and then the city and then try to figure out what's the base road and then estimate where on the road whatever number it is. That should all happen automatically
Tyrannosaur··on What would it take to bring back the dinosaurs?
As far as wildfires go, so is carbon dioxide. CO2 is not a typical reactant of combustion.
Tyrannosaur··on What would it take to bring back the dinosaurs?
Wait, why would carbon dioxide levels have any effect on wildfires more than, say nitrogen?

For wildfires, I would expect the proportion of oxygen to matter much more than other gasses not involved in combustion.

Perhaps there's a difference in humidity levels, and therefore specific heat of the air?

Veritasium video about Los Angeles' reservoir black spheres project. They used black because

- The goal was light-blocking more than anything else; black worked best

- The black pigment held up to the environment (especially UV degradation) better than anything else they tried

I expect the second point was the most important thing. Black plastic is very stable.

Tyrannosaur··on That annoying shade of blue (2018)
That is a pretty wild thread to read. Also funny to note the update- > Special thanks to @bennettf96052341 for his gracious feedback

I remember a youtube video from years ago explaining this problem with photoshop's gradient tool (and other naive implementations), but I can't find it now.

Colors are hard.

Tyrannosaur··on FedNow FAQ
The Plaid disaster hasn't waited- it's already started. They've already had to settle at least one class action lawsuit for deceptive practices

Tyrannosaur··on FedNow FAQ
It blows my mind how badly Zelle has failed. It already is integrated to US bank accounts. It started as a cooperative venture over a decade ago by several US banks with the explicit goal of being integrated with your bank so you don't need a separate account!

And yet it comes across as a mere clone of Venmo.

Tyrannosaur··on FedNow FAQ
I frequently ask people "If all major American banks got together and implemented a system where you could send money from one bank account to another in a payment system much faster than ACH, would it be big news?"

And yet they did, but it was not big news. There is currently an instant payment system integrated with all major American banks for person-to-person transactions, and yet they somehow fumbled it so Venmo takes all the publicity.

Tyrannosaur··on Why do placebos work? Scientists identify key brain pathway
I 100% agree, but that doesn't mean we can't still administer placebos:

I've read elsewhere that you don't have to lie to the person to still have a successful placebo effect- they can still receive a benefit even knowing it's not a real drug.

Tyrannosaur··on Montreal is taxing churches (2017)
Oh, worry not, I firmly believe that sometimes the government absolutely should take your money under threat of violence, but we should always remember that's exactly what taxes are.

Every time we propose the government spend money on something we must remember where that money comes from and seriously consider if it's justified.

Tyrannosaur··on Montreal is taxing churches (2017)
Why is a country's moral system so broken that instead of charitable giving you take from people under threat of force instead?
Tyrannosaur··on Coming to Chrome: a new way to use tabs

Tyrannosaur··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
What are the guesses as to how this happened? At the risk of sounding conspiratorial I propose that sometimes these "accidents" are less accidental than they claim. So much hype over this has got to be worth something.
Tyrannosaur··on Gun laws where guns take the most lives

Tyrannosaur··on Taxing Uber and Lyft rides is L.A's latest plan to free up congested roads
Your comment actually made me read the article. That is a direct quotation, and pushes the whole thing over the edge in my opinion from "very poorly thought-out plan" to "just barely pretending"
Tyrannosaur··on Why some Japanese pensioners want to go to jail
I've imagined a world where prisons and homeless shelters look almost identical, save the prisons don't allow you to leave.
Tyrannosaur··on Police to Seattle’s techies, streamers: Sign up for our anti-swatting service
What a racket. There is a problem with people spoofing voip phone calls calling in hoaxes and the best they can come up with to fix it is "oh pay for this protection service and we will send a normal police response instead of a murderous one."

WHAT?? Why not "oh this phone call has weird information and is untrackable. That's weird and abnormal, almost like this is a hoax. Let's go check assuming it is a hoax."

Tyrannosaur··on EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019
It speaks volumes that we find it easier to redefine time than to go to bed and wake to earlier.
