TruthElixirX··on Rand Paul filibustering over drones
Why don't you ask an adult black male about the ever increasing power of the government and whether or not he should be afraid:

According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) non-Hispanic blacks accounted for 39.4% of the total prison and jail population in 2009.[43][not in citation given] According to the 2010 census of the US Census Bureau blacks (including Hispanic blacks) comprised 13.6% of the US population.[44][45][46]

Or the fact that 1 in 10 people in the U.S. are currently incarcerated in the prison system.

>De-federalizing destroys a lot of the political and economic clout that the US can hold over other, smaller countries.

Yeah. I want that. The U.S. fucks around with other countries too much. Iran, all of South America, Asia, etc. It is not just clout, it is direct military and economic warfare to bend countries to the will of the federal government and Pentagon.

>No one is forcing the states to "hold the union together" against their will.

You are quite wrong, "They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot -- a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it."[1], also the Civil War moved the Union from a voluntary organization of the states to mandatory.

TruthElixirX··on Looking Back at the White House Hackathon
I believe that "hack" is called a new government.

Tangent:

The U.S. government is one of the oldest governments to not have a major political reform. The U.S. is one of the youngest countries though. Same Constitution (though it is bent for whatever purpose is "needed" at the time), same general layout, etc.

The U.K. has shifted to a democracy since the formation of the U.S. Germany has changed its power structure a few times. Same for China, Japan, etc.

The U.S. is in need of some deep major reform, and I am pretty sure every political ideology agrees with that (just don't agree on the type of reform).

I really think it would be in everyone's best interest though if the U.S. underwent peaceful Balkanization.

I am not sure why people in California have to live under the same rules as someone in Georgia. Their interests are completely different, their values, their demographics. It would stop a lot of wasted productivity over stupid bickering. "I want my kid to hate the homosexers and not learn about devolution!" Cool, Georgia can fuck off and become a shit hole. California can go full People's Republic of Kalifornia, and quit sending so much money to the federal government.

I mean Obama is the leader of 300+ million people. Doesn't that just seem insane?

It would also probably end the wars overseas.

I just don't understand people's want to hold the union together. Just let it go.

TruthElixirX··on Why was my email leaked?
I wouldn't be surprised if they are having problems finding support staff. I believe it was late 2011 or early 2012 they were advertising customer support positions and wanted someone with a CompSci degree and like 2 years of experience just to do customer support.

TruthElixirX··on CBS Bans SodaStream Ad
I hook the bottle full of water up to the soda stream, press the button to shoot in carbonation, and the carbonation just shoots out because the seal isn't airtight. I've tried pressing it short and quick, long and hard, etc. I just can't seem to get it to carbonate properly. Thoughts?

TruthElixirX··on YouTube Set to Introduce Paid Subscriptions This Spring
YouTube has gotten really bad with ads. They have a higher proportion of ads than regular TV. Want to watch a 3 minute music video? here is an ad.

I am against using ad block, so I just quit going to Youtube as much.

TruthElixirX··on Will Your College Go Out of Business Before You Graduate?
Yes, I agree. That was what I was trying to convey with my comments.
TruthElixirX··on Will Your College Go Out of Business Before You Graduate?
Market failure:

Market failure is a concept within economic theory describing when the allocation of goods and services by a free market is not efficient.

Colleges are not operating in a market system. They get money rationed to them by the government in various ways. Therefore it is not a market failure.

TruthElixirX··on Will Your College Go Out of Business Before You Graduate?
Everything people don't like are market failures.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5098258 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5112837 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4738488 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=963251 etc

People keep calling things like city planning a market failure when it is full of regulation.

Or healthcare when the U.S. government spends the most money on healthcare in the U.S.

etc

People throw the term around without knowing what it means.

EDIT:

Changed "is a market failure" to "are market failures".

Because they only committed economic damage against you. It doesn't make sense to send someone to jail who only committed an economic or property crime because:

They stole from you and harmed you economically. If they go to prison your tax dollars and the tax dollars of others must house them, pay for their care, etc so they are further harming you economically.

It would make more sense to have them provide restitution to you in some form. They should have to pay for:

Damage to the car (if the car still exists) + cost of you not having your car and any sort of issues arising from that (i.e. you were on your way to an interview, you came out of 7-Eleven and your car was gone, you missed your interview and now have no job, or some such) + interest on the previous two things they should have to pay for

If they destroyed the car in some manner then replace the first part of the equation with the cost of a replacement car of equal value.

Prison should be used when someone can cause harm that is permanent such as murder, rape, etc to prevent them from doing it again to someone else. If they harm is just economic in nature then that can be rectified and there is no sense in making everyone pay to house someone who did no permanent damage.

Further more as pointed out below, going to prison tends to make people come out worse criminals.

TruthElixirX··on Plea Bargaining and Torture in light of the Aaron Swartz case
I he meant this is a prisoner's dilemma type situation. It's great if no one takes a plea but if only you don't you are screwed.
TruthElixirX··on Plea Bargaining and Torture in light of the Aaron Swartz case
This is exactly what I was trying to say. Millions of dollars shouldn't be spent prosecuting people like Aaron. It is a waste to society in several ways.
TruthElixirX··on Plea Bargaining and Torture in light of the Aaron Swartz case
That wasn't my point. The point is right now unimportant and victimless issues get a lot of attention. If no one took a plea charges would be dropped except on really heinous acts.
TruthElixirX··on Plea Bargaining and Torture in light of the Aaron Swartz case
Yeah, I am a radical libertarian. I'm not hiding it, but this is an instance where I don't think the point I am trying to make is one that is specifically radically libertarian.

EDIT:: Which isn't to say it isn't radical, but I think several non-libertarian groups who oppose such things as the war on drugs and other victimless crimes would like to see the system grind to a halt and only important cases sought after.

TruthElixirX··on Plea Bargaining and Torture in light of the Aaron Swartz case
http://nevertakeaplea.org/

I have been a proponent of this since before the Aaron Swartz case. Plea bargains are used because the system would completely grind to a halt otherwise. And it should. The machine eats people's lives.

Never take a plea.
