TriangleEdge··on Trudeau Unveils $1.8B Plan to Boost AI Sector in Canada
Not sure how the govt plans to retain talent when said talent can go to the US and get easily paid double or triple the salary.
TriangleEdge··on Abstrusegoose.com Is Gone for Good
I loved these comics. I related to a lot of them. My favorite was the comic about sorting Skittles by color. I think you can still find the comics on the internet archive. Anyone have insight to what happened to the author?
TriangleEdge··on Montana Man Pleads to Federal Charges for Efforts to Create Giant Hybrid Sheep
I'm not understanding why these are federal charges. I thought selectively breeding animals and crops for desirable features is common place. For example: pugs can't reproduce naturally because people selectively bred them. Small dogs also don't occur anywhere naturally, they're human engineered animals.
TriangleEdge··on Lead in gasoline blunted IQ of half the U.S. population, study says
There's still lead pipes for drinking water in the USA. [1]

TriangleEdge··on Ask HN: Code Llama 70B on a dedicated server
It might be cheaper for you to call an API to run the inference instead of renting a machine. GPT-4-Turbo goes for $0.01 on 1k input and $0.03 for 1k output on Azure. A x2gd.2xlarg instance on AWS has 8vCPU and 128GB of memory. It goes for ~200$ per month.
TriangleEdge··on Mojeek
What's the competitive advantage compared to DDG? Why will this continue existing?
TriangleEdge··on The Era of 1-bit LLMs: ternary parameters for cost-effective computing
How do you train these? Or is it only for already trained models?
TriangleEdge··on Ottawa to create regulator to hold platforms accountable for harmful content
What I didn't see mentioned in this article is what "harm" means in this context. My pessimistic view is that the govt will define harm as they see fit.
TriangleEdge··on Show HN: Supermaven, the first code completion tool with 300k token context
I'd like to see <super-long-context> vs <mediocre-context-but-really-good-at-summarizing>, then it is fed parts of a super long context in chunks. On each iteration, you add the previous summary.
TriangleEdge··on Show HN: I made a multiplayer browser game
I have some feedback: please reduce the volume.
TriangleEdge··on YouTube addiction, one month sober
I have done the same thing with YT. Notice my first post on HN is adding this website to my hosts files because I found it too addicting. As of date, I have unblocked YT but kept almost all of the social media sites. I watch Twitch for background noise nowadays. I find it to be less addictive since it feels more ephemeral to me.
TriangleEdge··on Stop Basing Your Self-Worth on Other People's Opinions
Other peoples opinion of you is tied to your income, so I don't think there'll be a shift in this aspect of life.
TriangleEdge··on Sora: Creating video from text
I predict the word "disrupt" will see an exponential curve [1].

TriangleEdge··on Universal Basic Income Has Been Tried over and over Again. It Works Every Time
> The money has to come out of the system somewhere.

Governments have the ability to print money out of thin air.

What I'd like to see is how UBI impacts inflation and economic growth.

TriangleEdge··on Sora: Creating video from text
Welp, goodbye internet, it was fun to know you.
TriangleEdge··on FAA says 737 MAX operator discovered loose bolts in rudder system in December
I find the phenomena of viral news interesting. I assume most people in the USA don't want to think about the engineering of planes. In Canada, as of this writing, car theft news has become viral, but car theft is not new or unusual.

My question is: do all social beings have attention surges? Are attention surges required to be social? Flocks of birds and schools of fish all react in unison to input from a few I suppose.

TriangleEdge··on Could a giant parasol in outer space help solve the climate crisis?
What material would this have to be made of to not melt?

Edit: I'm not that familiar with radiation and its parameters/properties. My assumption was that it would accumulate heat. I'll go look up if radiation is a function of heat, then I suppose it could become stable at some temperature. It's surprising to me that you can block out some of the sun from a good area on the earth and not have melting bits.

TriangleEdge··on The road to hell is paved with asphalt
Grew up in the east coast of Canada where we have frigid winters. There's popular knowledge there that water will seep unevenly under the road, freeze, and lift parts of the road up. This causes the road to crack. Given snowplows scrape the roads, and cars still drive during winter, the lifted pavement gets damaged. This eventually results in potholes.

Pavers don't work because the city needs to remove the snow, and the pavers would get removed by the plows. I don't know of a viable road alternative that is also economical for places with snow.

TriangleEdge··on Acme Klein Bottle
I bought one of these for a mathematician I know. He immediately weaved some water in it and said: "look, there's water outside the bottle".

When I bought it some months ago, it came with a fun note, some hand written comments, and a sticker.

TriangleEdge··on Covid Test Data Breach: 1.3M Patient Records Exposed Online
> ... a non-password protected database that contained nearly 1.3 million records ...

Breach is not the word I would use here.

TriangleEdge··on Florida House of Representatives approves bill to ban social media for kids < 16
What's an enforcement mechanism that works for this? My concern is that teenagers are going to learn yet another way to be dishonest.
TriangleEdge··on Is the emergence of life an expected phase transition in the evolving universe?
Could be that what we experience as the universe is only a minor fraction of what exists. I define life as "processing information", so AI by definition is a life form given this definition.
TriangleEdge··on Chinese researchers planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
What kind of wattage is expected for this? And how is heat management done?
TriangleEdge··on Midjourney 6 Means the End for a Big Chunk of the Photo Industry
I'm not able to get past the captcha for these archive links. I am using Firefox. Anyone else?
TriangleEdge··on [dead]
And why should I trust Meta to do this honestly?
TriangleEdge··on [dead]
Doesn't Meta send the data do US intelligence agencies already? I thought this was revealed to journalists by Snowden.
TriangleEdge··on U.S. moves to increase minimum legal size of commercial lobster
I hear some farmers pump water into chickens to increase the weight so it sells for more. I also hear the same thing about bean moisture content since it's sold by weight (I think the Smarter Every Day has a video about granaries that shows this?).

Will this put pressure for farmed lobsters to be full of growth hormones?

TriangleEdge··on 'A mouse for your mouth': New device allows users to scroll with their tongues
This was done 10 years ago by the guy that runs the YT channel called Applied Science [1]. If my memory serves me well, he worked on R&D at Valve, but I could be wrong.

TriangleEdge··on How Monopolists drive the power and wealth divide
Like Peter Thiel once said in Zero to One, the point of a monopoly is monopoly profits.
TriangleEdge··on Is There Any Benefit to Multivitamins?
Edit: Eating clean is associated with all cause mortality, not diet [1].
