TowerTall··on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G12 laptop review: First major refresh in three years
I have the 2022 X1 Yoga Gen 6 as well. I am not impressed by battery life. Watching a 4K movie can easily drain the battery form full charge.

The major issue is over heating. Unless I place some small item underneath it (think a lighter size) to make a 1 inch gab between the surface and the laptop it overheats to the point where it stops functions (e.g. movies starts to freeze up). With a bit a airflow underneath it this problem goes away. The casing can get really hot. Almost to the point where you burn yourself. Almost.

TowerTall··on I don't think the cheapest APC Back-UPS units can be monitored except in Windows
My biggest grief with the APC UPS are that they initiate the shutdown process immediately in case of power loss. I live in a location where we frequent has 10 - 60 seconds power cuts. The optimal solution would be if the UPS waited like 5 minutes before starting to shutdown the connected PC. For this reason alone I stopped connecting my desktop pc to UPS and stopped installing the UPS powershute software. I wrote their support and asked if i could daisy chain a battery with the UPS so the battery would be used first and when that battery was depleted the UPS would take over and start the shutdown process. They advices me against this and pointed me to this FAQ. It doesn't directly adressing daisy chaining a UPS with a battery. Anyone here that has experience with doing that?

TowerTall··on Ask HN: How often do you restart your computer?
windows user. Very infrequent like every other month. With a few exception, I only reboot when Windows Update requires it
TowerTall··on A French village that voted to ban scrolling in public
In my experience, always ask girls for directions, not boys. A boy will never admit that he doesn't know the answer so he will gladly send you off in any direction. A girl on the other hand will try everything in her power to get you in the right direction and will have no problem admitting it if she doesn't know where it is.

TowerTall··on Making a PDF that's larger than Germany
I really hate that too. You are in a intersection and the voice says "Drive north for x miles/km". What is wrong with "turn right and drive for x miles/km"? I normally have zero clue in what direction north is especially when I am in a location i have never been before. I drive a bike and have the phone in my pocket and can therefore not see any arrow that the app might display. I only have the audio to navigate from.

TowerTall··on Microsoft is adding a new key to PC keyboards since 1994
Yes. For me it looks to be in the perfect spot to be remapped as print screen key.
TowerTall··on In 2024, please switch to Firefox
There is no support for touch screen navigation gestures in Firefox on Windows and that is the #1 reason why I cannot switch. I use the touchscreen on laptop while browsing every day.

Touch screens on windows isn't something new. They became common around the time of the release of Windows 8 in 2012.

TowerTall··on Google Map has / is testing new color scheme
In google maps many of pins for e.g. hotels are red and the push pin that marks your search result is also red just bigger and in different shade of red.

I must have spend years trying to find the push pin for my search result. I am not aware that should have any particular issues with differencing colors. It only on Google maps I have this problem. I do wonder why there are so few complains about this detail, so I guess must have some colors issues with my eyes since no one else seems to complain about this.

I can see the difference between the two shades of red but they could easily have chosen a different color for the marker for your search result so i stands out much more clearly.

TowerTall··on Microsoft is killing offline maps in the Maps app
well, goodbye Microsoft Maps. I use you exclusively in offline mode as I as often in areas with no connection. Time to find another solution. From my point of view if find it very hard to come up with any valid reasons why to remove this feature. Maybe its just a change for the sake of changing, which is stupid
TowerTall··on VS Code Introduces Floating Windows Support - The Most Requested Feature Ever
The original issue on GitHub ask for that the toolpanes (terminal, Debug console, etc) can be opened in a floating window. What the upcoming vs code feature has implemented is that the code editor for a file can be opened in a new window.

The announced feature doesn't actually address the original issue raised and is much less useful than the features the OP ask for.

Personally it is rare that I need to display two documents in two seperate windows, but to have some of the tools in seperate windows. That I use all in the time in visual studio proper.

TowerTall··on Why Are So Many Dogs on Prozac?
Respirators should have been receptors.
TowerTall··on Why Are So Many Dogs on Prozac?
I was advised to give a triple dose the first time to trigger some respirators. There are plenty of guides online on how to calculate the proper dose based on body weight of the dog and the strength of the CBD oil.
TowerTall··on Tell HN: Photopea refuses to create or open files if you have an ad blocker
Yes, perfectly reasonable. I bought a license for it to overcome this problem.
TowerTall··on Why Are So Many Dogs on Prozac?
A very nervous street dog decided to move in with me a year ago. For a few month I gave her a couple of drops CBD weed oil in her food. It did help a little, I think. She slept more. I don't give that anymore after finished the bottle. She is much more calm now. It could be because CBD got her to relax and bring the stress level down or it could be that it because she has adjusted to her new environment. Worth a try. It wont harm
TowerTall··on Using extra Firefox profiles to make my life better
> Allow better visual distinction of profiles, e.g. giving them different colors.

I use the profiles in Brave for that exact reason. The ability to have different colors on the icons in the taskbar and the browser chrome was the reason I gave Brave a go in the first place. Now it is a feature I cannot live without.
