2) that it's a different shell, not a fully different desktop environment isn't really that important, for a normal user it will already cause confusion (maybe even more as it requires additional explanation what's the difference between the two).
Don't get me wrong: the thing that you have a choice is one of the virtues of Linux, but at the same time what it causes is that:
a) Linux is doomed to fail on a mainstream desktop market
b) none of the available choices is and probably will never be as polished as commercial competitors (and fragmentation is one of the reasons of that)
Anyone still believes Linux has any chance on a desktop market?
Remember, Quake was released in 1996, SSE came out in 1999.

About the 1st point: totally agree. I use flickr to look for a good pictures and from time to time to post some of mine that are reasonably OK - for me it's not, and never has been, a site to post photos from last night's bash or socialize with people, that's what Facebook is for (and maybe G+ will be someday in the future (but it won't come easy for them)). I also don't need the site to change every 6 months - if it works OK (and flickr works OK for me) then changing it is not really necessary (or at least, not that important).
Edit: just checked it again (placing tab bar on the left) and now thumbnails turing on/off doesn't work at all - like I wrote: "buggy" :)
PS. also worth noting that Opera allows for easily grouping of tabs in the manner similar to the one described in OP (no naming though, fortunately (in my opinion at least)).
"c" must come from H2, "a" from H4 and that leaves "b" as either flaw in H4 or also a H2 - the latter would be a good news for me because people from that category are actually girls I gave up on a long time ago thinking they are not interested in me ;)
Edit: http://www.bbc.co.uk might be even better example of a good news site design.
Didn't dwell too much into Lithium's code but saw they have some interesting ideas also based on 5.3 features, e.g. they use a sort of aspect-oriented programming based on closures and lambdas. Sounds cool, even if only for experimenting with different programming approaches.
As for the artists, I don't know, Spotify (and Internet in general) helps all those little bands to get some listeners, as discovering new artists is much easier now thanks to technology (20 years ago it all depended on labels, MTV and music press). As for the "big" artists? I don't think they should have been earning as much as they were during the heydays of music industry, nor do I feel like helping Mick Jagger or Bono funding a new yach or private jet.
