TomasEkeli··on Ember-1
I think they are trying to show potential customers what is possible.
TomasEkeli··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
Works well for me on Firefox with uBlock origin without any special lists.

Personally I use my own fork of FreeTube on desktops, though, falling back to Firefox with uBlock when there are outages.

TomasEkeli··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
Fair opinion. Also fair to fork when one does not agree. This is how the system is supposed to work.
TomasEkeli··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock
It's working again.
TomasEkeli··on Credentials for Linux: Bringing Passkeys to the Linux Desktop
it's mine.
TomasEkeli··on Thunderbird adds native Microsoft Exchange email support
I'll stick with Owl for a while longer. This native feature doesn't support calendars or address books, making it essentially worthless to me.

Also it's based on a protocol that's dying (slowly).

Good to see they're attending to exchange support, but this is a lackluster step.

TomasEkeli··on Matrix Is Not Safe for EU Data Privacy?
In my opinion this is a poor, vendor-originated commentary attempting to spread FUD and drive people to a product. Not worth reading, and I wish I didn't.
TomasEkeli··on Thousands in Norway told they had won life-changing sums in lottery error
Accepting responsibility and leaving is a cop-out?

That's totally opposite to my impression. She took responsibility, left and the company has now shown externally and internally that these kinds of errors have large consequences.

Also: This was not the first sign of mismanagement and bad culture at Norsk Tipping.

TomasEkeli··on Sparks – A typeface for creating sparklines in text without code
Thankyou! I was starting to question myself looking at those small bar-graphs. That's not a spark-line!

Cool, I guess, but no spark-line.

TomasEkeli··on How to Use Em Dashes (–), En Dashes (–), and Hyphens (-)
I'm just gonna say it: this does not matter. Just use whatever you want. If you're afraid that someone is going to think less of you for it: the people who matter won't.
TomasEkeli··on Disco Elysium Explorer
giving it a domain-name and serving with https encryption on it would improve all kinds of security.

then again, it feels wonderfully apt that it is on some random ip

TomasEkeli··on What other communities do you use apart from HN?
programming.dev has some good ones
TomasEkeli··on Magit 4.0 Released
highly recommend edamagit in vscode for those over here.

except there's currently a bug that stops commit from working (c - c) when developing in wsl or a devcontainer, hopefully it'll be fixed soon. BUT if you're developing directly on your machine it is an excellent interface to git.

TomasEkeli··on Show HN: A fake SMTP server for software integration testing
hugged to death?

anyway - i got a great 429 back with a suggested try-after -time. it made me smile in appreciation!

well done!

TomasEkeli··on Elegant open source project tracking, Trello like but self-hosted
i love kitemaker, and they're really responsive on their slack
TomasEkeli··on Lessons learned from bringing promotional sweets to a conference
licorice! salty licorice. many people don't like them, but even more people haven't tried them. a sure-fire conversation-starter.
TomasEkeli··on Meta unlawfully ignores the users' right to easily withdraw consent: complaint
could you please explain what those abbreviations mean? I know GDPR, but the rest are obscure to me.
TomasEkeli··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
here in Norway the standard is 2 weeks in the first 6 months of employment, after that: 3 months.

this goes both ways - for quitting and firing.

TomasEkeli··on The Art of Logging
oh no - introducing asynchronous logging made it better. but not nearly enough.

it was far, far worse than that.

TomasEkeli··on The Art of Logging
i've consistently been improving performance by removing logging.

feels bad, but getting a 55 hour job down to 12 hours by removing logging was worth it.

yes, we log asynchronously and without blocking. but it is a constant tax on everything that happens and it adds up.

TomasEkeli··on Automating cookie consent and GDPR violation detection
very much this.

I'm getting so tired of people implying the law is wrong just because sites still want to perform the tracking and data gathering it intends to limit.

TomasEkeli··on Fastmail vs. ProtonMail: A Comparison
so, when fastmail compare fastmail and protonmail they (surprise) end up concluding that fastmail is better.

might be, but I'd prefer to hear it from someone else.

TomasEkeli··on My boundaries as an open source developer
i think those two actually collapse to the exact same thing: "no guaranteed support"
TomasEkeli··on Eyeo wins German copyright decision, sets legal precedent for who ‘owns’ HTML
rather - you could sell a pair of glasses with yellow-tinted glass that transforms how any book looks. that's perfectly fine.
TomasEkeli··on Problems with AI-based monitoring startups (2018)
that's just silly. someone with operational experience can switch to ai research later in their career. probably not super common, but nothing definitionally wrong with it
TomasEkeli··on Show HN: Dendron – A Hierarchical Tool for Thought
sarcasm works so well in written communication, particularly online with strangers
TomasEkeli··on United States vs. Google
one seems about right
TomasEkeli··on Launch HN: GitDuck (YC S20) – Zoom for developers with real-time code sharing
Live Share works in both Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code (dunno, maybe VS Mac as well) - if you're in a dotnet shop that covers most cases.
TomasEkeli··on Show HN: Dungeon Map Doodler – Free online map drawing tool
Extremely cool! Well done!
TomasEkeli··on Herd of Fuzzy Green 'Glacier Mice' Baffles Scientists
I really like how that site solved the problem of visitors that don't accept tracking. I got a challenge asking me to accept cookies, out get the just-text version.

No images, no scripts, no cookies, no styling. Just the text. What a great thing!
