Tinyyy··on MIT and Harvard file suit against new ICE regulations
There is a growing number of Chinese students who graduate from top Chinese universities or return to work in China after their US education. The US may hold a dominant position right now, but that lead is fading and the unwelcoming attitude towards immigrants is driving the best and brightest back home. This is especially true in engineering (vs academia where US still has a huge advantage), where there has been an explosion in Chinese tech companies who pay salaries competent to US tech companies when adjusting for CoL. It’s therefore not surprising that in the last decade we saw many rising Chinese companies like TikTok, Xiaomi, Tencent make waves even in American markets. In the next decade, if the US fails to capture the brightest minds of the world, we could see China start to become a viable alternative to the US, especially for tech workers.
Tinyyy··on Open Letter from Gilead CEO: Remdesivir Pricing
If you think Remdesivir is not effective you could simply choose to not take it.
Tinyyy··on Open Letter from Gilead CEO: Remdesivir Pricing
At $2340 a patient, the drug is an expensive treatment plan but not overpriced imo. If the claimed reduction in time to recovery is true, then around $600 a day of reduced recovery time is probably worth the hospitalization and long term health costs.

Besides having to recoup the costs of development of Remdesivir, as well as the costs to trial various drugs that never make it to market, Remdesivir is currently in short supply and probably costs a significant amount to produce. It seems unreasonable to expect a good in such short supply to be sold for cheap. The overall cost of $2k isn’t prohibitively expensive such that many lives would be lost over this anyways.

Tinyyy··on Open Letter from Gilead CEO: Remdesivir Pricing
They’re not selling the drugs to developing countries and won’t be for a while. There simply isn’t enough stock to go around.
Tinyyy··on Amazon refuses to sell book on Covid-19 and lockdowns
They don’t have a monopoly on book publishing though. Look at how many book publishers there are out there.

Tinyyy··on The Year the Internet Thought I Was MacKenzie Bezos
They do indeed generate revenue for the publishers, because a fraction of the users actually click through into the article. Without the snippet promoting it, the article would see much fewer traffic from Google.
Tinyyy··on Selfie 2 Waifu
Me too. It seems that the site is compromised and issues redirects to malware without user interaction. Maybe @dang can consider changing this to an archived version of the site until it’s fixed?
Tinyyy··on Disney Assumes Full Control of Hulu in Deal with Comcast

They don't really make a 'product' but Jane Street uses Ocaml for all their development.
Tinyyy··on Advent of Code 2018
Interesting choice. What made you want to learn Ocaml?
Tinyyy··on Most stockmarket returns come from a tiny fraction of shares
That’s not what the article concludes with. The conclusion is that it’s difficult to time stock trades at the right time, and even indexing the US market is vulnerable to bubbles, so one should diversify by investing in European markets as well.
Tinyyy··on Amazon threatens to suspend Signal's AWS account over censorship circumvention
So they're basically asking for forgiveness instead of permission, fronting other sites until they are told to stop?

Well it’s hard to be negatively exposed to crypto so the discussion will be biased.
Tinyyy··on RuTracker Reveals Plan for Users to Subvert ISP Blocking

Tinyyy··on Starbucks in-store wifi provider in Buenos Aires uses CoinHive
This isn’t mining Bitcoin, it’s using Coinhive (https://coinhive.com) to mine Monero
Tinyyy··on $40 road tolls offer insight into commuter psychology
By that logic, almost every single rule in this world is 'unfair' towards the poor, because of course things cost disproportionately more for the poor.
Tinyyy··on $40 road tolls offer insight into commuter psychology
Actually this is a form of progressive taxation that has less impact the poorer you are. Because the poor are less likely to pay for the roads, they on the average pay less taxes. And given that the road was previously completely banned, they also have access to plenty of alternatives, be it taking other roads or carpooling. On the other hand, the ‘dumb rich’ will pay out of their nose to not have to share their car with someone else.
Tinyyy··on $40 road tolls offer insight into commuter psychology
But the rules remain the same for everyone: if you want to use the road and don’t want to carpool, you pay.
