Timshel··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
In a way it's worse since, you can't make plan to move if they become obsolete in 2 months but can you afford/survive waiting ...
Timshel··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
I think the point is kind of moot.

I doubt they own any part of their manufacturing at the moment. Unless manufacturing already exists in the US (which I doubt here), I don't believe company this size has any chance to move manufacturing to the US

The GamerNexus video already mentioned elsewhere explore those issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W_mSOS1Qts.

Timshel··on I gave up on self-hosted Sentry (2024)
I doubt he would have been paid to promote a competing service ..
Timshel··on Mastodon Exit Interview
https://mastodon.social/about does not appear to block mas.to.

As mentioned in the article it's just that if nobody is interested in your posts then they won't propagate.

> Crucially, the posts did not exist even if I visited the profile page of the account: even after weeks of daily posts

This means he did not even follow his own bot account, otherwise the posts would be visible ...

Timshel··on Mastodon Exit Interview
> then you feed gets dominated by that account, and you end up unsubscribing

Possible solution is to create a list with those accounts, remove them from the default feed and display them separately.

Timshel··on Bluesky's Quest to Build Nontoxic Social Media
> Nontoxic social media isn’t possible.

I agree, but you can't ignore politics because in the end your definition of Toxicity is probably a direct reflection of your political positions.

And if current platform are so toxic I believe it's mainly by choice, be it an ideological or economical one.

Timshel··on Gumroad’s source is available
Yes but before you reach this point you probably have a bit of time to start discussing with them ?
Timshel··on Gumroad’s source is available
While limiting, it's not atrocious:

>You may use the software under this license only if (1) your company has less than 1 million USD (2024) total revenue in the prior tax year, and less than 10 million USD (2024) GMV (Gross Merchandise Value), or (2) you are a non-profit organization or government entity.

Timshel··on Preventing nearsightedness using AR glasses or projectors
For AR they are linking an article which describe a way it could be beneficial: https://eyewiki.org/AR_Computers_To_Terminate_Eyestrain_And_... But I don’t believe it exists in any device ...

Cf >So by using a modified augmented reality glasses, humans can read at close range with both the ciliary and medial rectus muscles relaxed, and the eyes will never get tired.

As for VR no source ...

Timshel··on Not OK Cupid – A story of poor email address validation
Start now with a forward from the old address. Might take multiple years before you are confortable deleting the old address.
Timshel··on AMD's Strix Halo under the hood
Framework is selling the board as a stand alone: https://frame.work/fr/en/products/framework-desktop-mainboar...

Too bad there isn't a full PCIe (might not be enough bandwidth left) :(.

Timshel··on Contra Chrome: How Google's browser became a threat to privacy and democracy
Not to attack OP but when I see comments like those I think we're fucked.

If even on HN peoples care so little for privacy it's no wonder Mozilla could not truly push the privacy angle and are forced to resort to IA crap ...

Timshel··on PayPal honey extension has again "featured" flag in Chrome web store
How is it still at 4.6 stars ??? On Firefox it dropped to 2.9 ...
Timshel··on Mozilla rewrites Firefox's Terms of Use after user backlash
For the share issue we are already there, with Firefox+Linux so many websites started to just block, usually with chrome at least a captcha is still offered.

With the current board and directors and focus I don't see any ways Firefox will gain share in the future (or not any that I really care about), and I certainly have no interest to support the current goals ...

For the privacy part Mozilla has been sitting on features like containers for years with no improvements. At this point I believe Mozilla ending might be better since it would shake things up ...

Timshel··on “The closer to the train station, the worse the kebab” – a “study”
Hey, Not sure what you were left with once you removed metro stations but in the context of the original image the "gare" would be: https://www.sncf-connect.com/gares/paris .

And people would probably often forget Paris Bercy ^^.

Timshel··on “The closer to the train station, the worse the kebab” – a “study”
For those wondering the original image was speaking of "Gare" which are well-defined: https://www.sncf-connect.com/gares/paris
Timshel··on Privacy Pass Authentication for Kagi Search
While it's relatively trivial to run something like:

  fetch(new Request("https://kagi.com/search?q=test", { method: "GET", headers: new Headers({ "X-Kagi-PrivacyPass-Client": true })})).then((r) => console.log(r.headers.get("www-authenticate")))
A simple response in the body to something like <https://kagi.com/privacypass> would be easier to check.

And you answered someone else:

> It is also something anyone else could do to keep us honest :)

While true I believe for such a feature making it as easy as possible for your users to check independently is just better.

Timshel··on Chrome browser bringing an IP address privacy tool to Incognito
Kind of as long as they can track you, it's good if others cannot.
Timshel··on Parents were injured in a Tesla crash. She ended up having to pay Tesla damages
In France there is a detailled report of a Tesla in a similar accident, it end up speeding over 100km/h and killed a cyclist.

What's interesting is that after a red light acceleration was initially inhibited (don't remember exactly why), driver pressed on the accelerator more and more up to almost 100% but the car was not speeding up much.

Then when inhibition was lifted the car basically started a quarter mile and the driver was overwhelmed and just steered the car without lifting the accelerator until it crashed :(.

Edit: In this accident too, the driver thought he tried to stop but with no effect. AEBS was triggered, but the driver missed the notification and just accelerated more when the car started slowing down. A residual pressure in the breaking system meant that acceleration was initially limited.

The full report: https://www.bea-tt.developpement-durable.gouv.fr/IMG/pdf/bea...

Timshel··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
I would bet on "Normalization of deviance", such a close altitude separation should probably just not exists (default is 1000ft).

If it had become a norm then a second controller would probably not change anything.

Timshel··on AI systems with 'unacceptable risk' are now banned in the EU
Yeah let's wait until more "AI that tries to infer people’s emotions at work or school." or "AI that manipulates a person’s decisions subliminally or deceptively." are deployed and start spamming crap before making any regulation ...
Timshel··on A Coup Is in Progress in America
Yes as far as I understand it's a big issue. Since you can only vouch once it's dead and usually too late. Additionnaly you might loose the ability to vouch ...
Timshel··on French police free kidnapped Ledger executive
Probably as much as possible. Those are expensive teams to maintain and deploiment is probably not much compared to it. If you are cynical you could see it as just training for an important case.
Timshel··on Migration tool to leave Twitter/X
There is a page with the details of what they retrieve/store: https://www.helloquitx.com/How-is-your-personal-data-process...

They essentially rely on you sharing the follower.js/following.js file from your data dump.

Timshel··on Migration tool to leave Twitter/X
It's a tool to help you stay in contact with your follower if you decide to leave Twitter. The decision is still up to you, the goal is to try to minimize the network effect which might prevent some people from leaving.

I fail to see the manipulation ...

Timshel··on Google’s OAuth login doesn’t protect against purchasing a failed startup domain
It all depends on how true this statement is:

> “The sub claim changes in about 0.04% of logins from Log in with Google. For us, that's hundreds of users last week”.

Timshel··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
I can't seem to find your citation from the add-on page.

Might be a placebo but YT appear more responsive with it on than off after a ctrl+f5.

Edit: appears to be in the reviews: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chrome-mask/r...

Timshel··on I Switched to Firefox and Never Looked Back
> Currently the main attack facing Firefox is coming from advertising companies such as YouTube.

While I agree; between an up-to-date uBlock Origin and https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/chrome-mask YT is quite usable.

Long term I'm more worried by Mozilla leadership than Google shenanigans.

Timshel··on ZFS 2.3 released with ZFS raidz expansion
I don't believe it supports adding parity drives only data drives.
Timshel··on Let's Quit X
Many would not open an account on truth social, since Twitter/X is turning into it seems logical to encourage/help people leaving.
