I would be delighted if their long-term solution is eBPF which provides full anti-malware hooks, but again it's unfortunately not there yet.
This doesn't exist. It's briefly hinted at in their conclusion, but right now it's simply not there.
There is no userspace equivalent of filesystem minifilters, ObRegisterCallbacks, etc.
Dwarf Fortress for example starts with basic midpoint displacement but then does a lot of custom massaging.
The vast majority of development work isn't creating slightly modified boilerplate.
If you want to hook process execution or file access, you're writing a kernel driver.
I sort of respect Humane for trying something genuinely different, though it doesn't seem to solve any real problems. The Rabbit R1 is just cheap junk.

I suspect the overwhelming majority of Factorio players are using Steam, which auto updates.
To fill this void, there are three competing forks with different approaches. And they've all been going for years, they haven't fizzled out. I can't think of anything else like it in the emulation scene or really anywhere.
Glad they went with a config option instead.
I mean self-hosted GitLab is fine, I don't know that you're losing out on any major features. But I wouldn't worry about using GitHub unless security and control of your assets is a critical necessity, in which case you definitely shouldn't trust some VPS/cloud provider either.
