Throwaway1224··on The Joyful, Illiterate Kindergartners of Finland
Grew up in the USA. Spent 8 years in Finland.

Finnish kids are taught by the parents to read long before they get to school. Sure, it helps that the Finnish language is phonetic... But really, it's a home environment that teaches that reading is fun and enjoyable and can get you what you want.

Same goes for counting and basic arithmetic.

It's a cultural thing.

Teachers in Finland are not geniuses. The caliber of the teachers is, in fact, higher than the USA, but this stems more from seats in schools as opposed to "smart people wanting to become teachers".

The desirability ranking of what the average student would like to do goes like this: Medical Engineer Law French Pyschology ... Education ... Waiter ...

So somewhere along this spectrum, you get a bunch of qualified people who become teachers. There's only a limited number of seats for each profession (driven by free education... you can NOT become anything you want to become, you have to do better than the others on the entrance test). So you don't get a disproportionate group of people getting a degree in History or Biology or Pyschology. The number seats are arranged according to the needs of the society.

And kids would rather be teachers than waiters (yes, there's a school for that).

In Finland, teachers do NOT make more than engineers or doctors. They make about one third (pre tax) of what doctors or engineers make.

Also, Finland is incredibly homogenous. Take that for what you will...

Throwaway1224··on After Nokia Layoffs, Tech Workers in Finland Regroup and Refocus
I worked at Nokia in Finland from 2006 to 2014. I have nothing but good things to say about the company.

I have since moved back to the United States, but my management philosophy has definitely been shaped by the culture there and the way they treated their employees.

Throwaway1224··on How a Blind Person Programs
I was in an ACM programming competition in 2004(?) where one of the competitors was blind. It was hosted by LSU.

I always wondered what happened to that dude.

Throwaway1224··on Optimizely Statistics Engine
a lot of people are denigrating the site based on its content, but i'll, fully expecting to be down-voted, go out on a limb and say what I think we are all thinking: "i just don't like that guy's sweater".
Throwaway1224··on Air Fares 101 – Why do fares change all the time?
Here's the theory behind the price changes:

Throwaway1224··on Air Fares 101 – Why do fares change all the time?
This is incorrect. WNCO has a big revenue management department, meaning they change pricing based on supply and demand. I believe they use PROS, but I can't recall 100%.
Throwaway1224··on Beer Caps to Coffee Tables
I did a very similar project, although I just used the average pixel color and had a randomized list to do a greedy algorithm.

As I was building the concept out, I made a version that output to Excel as opposed to a bottle cap rendering. The results were pretty fun...

Sometimes I dump random images into peoples' Google docs.

Throwaway1224··on Gray Code
I use gray code to generate sobol sequences, which are psuedo random number sequences that help you approximate a distribution more quickly than purely random sequences.
Throwaway1224··on Best Shot – Protecting ourselves from the anti-vaccine movement
I got a lot of flak when pig SARS came around.

A few weeks after the news of an outbreak came around, a vaccine was available in Finland.

I refused the vaccine under the premise that I didn't believe it had been properly tested. People called me a nut, claiming I was "anti-vaccine" and some kind of right wing wacko and that Bush was the devil, etc.

A couple years later, it turned out the vaccine gave a bunch of Finnish kids narcolepsy, but by this point nobody was focused on pig SARS and my "See? I told you so!" fell on deaf ears.

I think vaccine-hesitance is too readily labeled as anti-vaccine, and there is a confirmation bias where it is easy to point out that someone is sick with an XYZ infection but it is difficult to show correlation between a vaccination that occurred 5 years ago and some symptoms that end up appearing as a result of that vaccination.

Throwaway1224··on Ask HN: Anyone need a landing page photo for free?
Hey I am making a web site where you can meet up with other people who have ebola. It's like a cross between Match.com and Meetup, but for people who actively have ebola.

A good cover image could be key. Maybe a picture of an ebola or some kid playing with an ebola stuffed animal. Something that promotes togetherness.

TIA.

Throwaway1224··on Airbnb in the City – New York State Attorney General's Report [pdf]
I think his point is not about an individual's spending habits but the increased spending of the population as a whole. A breakeven analysis is needed. Income elasticity of demand... that sort of thing.

You have to compare the cannibalization of lost hotel sales to the revenue from AirBnB sales and increased airline sales and increased incidental revenue etc and say "ok now we think X many more people will make the trip because the bar has been lowered". Then you drink a nice cool refreshing Dr. Pepper, and maybe book a trip to Denver to buy some edibles.

Throwaway1224··on Ask HN: Are there startups that went open-source and succeed?
I don't see in any way how exposing your IP will make you bigger.

You say that your competitors are better at PR. Have you analyzed your growth and PR strategies?

What is your competitive positioning? Are you cheaper? Are there fundamental technological advances that you have that make you innately better?

Here is a cheat sheet that is sort of the standard when it comes to competitive strategy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porter_five_forces_analysis

the graff with the addiction rate vs. drug control spending is misleading. while the addiction rate is constant, the population is growing, meaning the total number of addicted people would be rising.

graff graff.
