TheUnhinged··on All of Apple's services are abysmal
All of them? The author points at some particular issues they have had and concludes that all Apple services are garbage?! Well, except for iMessage and FaceTime.

I’ve been using Apple Music, iCloud Drive, bookmark sync, etc. for many years with zero issues. I even host my email at iCloud (since Google pulled the rug on the free Google Apps tier)—no issues whatsoever.

My family has also had zero issues.

Google Maps has a disgusting UX and I hate it every time I need to use it (for the reviews). Apple Maps has been great for the past few years. And don’t get me started on Dropbox with their monstrosity Electron client. F*ck that. Or the silly Spotify client that can’t do smart playlists and has no concept of genres.

IME, while not perfect, Apple’s services’ quality is far above the competition’s.

TheUnhinged··on Web Browsers have stopped blocking pop-ups
DuckDuckGo has that feature, too.
TheUnhinged··on Australia to force porn websites to check users' ages under new internet rules
Agreed. However it cannot be enforced without violating people’s privacy. I pick privacy.
TheUnhinged··on NPM package 'debug' v4.4.2 contains malware
is-arrayish lmao
TheUnhinged··on YouTube's New Hue
A lot of people suggesting paying for Premium. Value for money arguments aside, I see a huge problem here: sharing even more data (personal financial information) with Google.

I, personally, have zero trust in Google. That’s a company that went from “Don’t be evil” to “Be as evil as needed as long as it’s profitable.”

TheUnhinged··on Frustrated YouTube viewers seek explanation for hour-long unskippable ads
This. I’d be more than happy to pay (a reasonable price to) Google. I don’t want to give them any personal information, especially financial.
TheUnhinged··on Xiaomi Successfully Tapped Out China's First 3nm SoC
You’re right, it doesn’t mean anything related to a physical dimension. Its sole purpose is to show shrinkage (in terms of density) compared to the previous generation.

That being said, assuming that the Chinese “3nm” is comparable to the rest of the industry’s nodes, I highly doubt they can make it. “7nm” is/was the last node size that could be produced without EUV (while still economically viable). And that was with multiple-patterning on Immersion scanners.

China doesn’t and can’t have EUV. They do have Immersion, but that’s now also under export controls.

TheUnhinged··on Uno Platform Studio: GUI Designer for Cross-Platform .NET Applications
How does Avalonia do native look-and-feel? Does it use its own custom controls (with themes) or does it try to do what Qt does (using native theming APIs)?
TheUnhinged··on Three-Quarters of U.S. Adults Are Now Overweight or Obese
Exactly this. Athletes are an outlier when it comes to BMI.

Furthermore, I reckon the majority of the people discussing BMI, as in these comments, would tend to be outliers, too, based solely on the fact they care/understand.

The majority of the population has no fucking clue, and can’t even read nutrition labels. And I am not blaming them. This stuff should be taught in school—basic nutrition education.

TheUnhinged··on Intel reinstates free coffee for employees after mass layoffs
That’s hilarious.
TheUnhinged··on Facebook and Instagram to Offer Subscription for No Ads in Europe
Not that I care much about Meta or other Socials, but would they also stop data collection and tracking for paying customers?
TheUnhinged··on Dev Fonts
I love SF Mono and use it everywhere.

The reason SF Mono and Monaco are not on the list is probably because they are proprietary.

TheUnhinged··on Dev Fonts
Same here, I hate ligatures.
TheUnhinged··on TSMC will stop making 7 nm chips for Chinese customers
You underestimate the sheer complexity of it. You’re talking $1B, I am talking a blank check. That’s probably 100s of different research teams, each with a $?B, whose “research” would have to industrialized.

Then there’s integration and SW. Not to mention performance, metrology, diagnostics.

Now you have to actually integrate these new tools into a new leading node process. This by itself takes years, assuming you have the tools. China does have existing Immersion process nodes, but still.

Even with unlimited resources, I claim China can’t have EUV within 10 years. Maybe not even 20.

TheUnhinged··on TSMC will stop making 7 nm chips for Chinese customers
Two reasons why TSMC operations in Taiwan would cease: 1. Skilled workers to develop and operate the fabs. I doubt it that the Taiwanese would happily continue to innovate under a (possibly violent) Chinese regime. 2. Supply of fab equipment from ASML and other Western companies.
TheUnhinged··on TSMC will stop making 7 nm chips for Chinese customers
EUV (not High-NA) is much, much more complex than Immersion Lithography—and China doesn’t have have that either—the optics (mirrors), the light source, the masks, everything under vacuum… A blank check (which the government would be happy to sign) is not enough to catch up on everything in 10 years, integrate it and then make it work reliably at a decent throughput. Not impossible, of course, which is why they are going to try.

To top it all off, a lot of this stuff is patented. Not that China cares all that much about Western patents, but violations in this area would make the geopolitical situation even more tense.

TheUnhinged··on Show HN: GitQuill – free cross-platform GUI for Git, inspired by GitKraken
Electron is a show-stopper for me.
TheUnhinged··on Should elephants have the same rights as people? A Colorado court may decide
People in which part of the world? Need to be specific, elephants (should) probably care just about how much rights they’re getting.
TheUnhinged··on The $9B James Webb Space Telescope Runs JavaScript
I wish this kind of SW was open source.

TheUnhinged··on How An ASML Lithography Machine Moves a Wafer [video]
That was 20 years ago. In another video, John says ~8 billion LOC, which seems more a accurate.

ASML is a system integrator. I presume that those numbers include 3rd party SW, and offline tooling and modeling SW.

An ASML machine is IMO more complex than the shuttle, ISS, a 747 and an aircraft carrier, combined.

TheUnhinged··on December's Windows 11 KB5033375 update breaks Wi-Fi connectivity
Microsoft has no taste.
TheUnhinged··on Firefox Keeps Getting Faster
Fully agreed. On top of that, no right click “Look Up” menu (standard on macOS) and no vertical tabs*

* The TreeStyleTab extension (I think was the name) is pretty bad. For example, it doesn’t restore the tab hierarchy on restart.

TheUnhinged··on YouTube gets more aggressive in pushing adblock warnings with countdown timer
I have two issues with paying Google for YouTube Premium:

1. I don’t trust Google at all and am very reluctant about giving them any personal information.

2. Even if I pay, I still get all the promotional crap that the content creators put in their videos.

TheUnhinged··on Bram Moolenaar has died
RIP Bram
TheUnhinged··on ASML EUV lithography machine could keep Moore’s Law on track
Everything was a challenge with EUV—the source, the vacuum, the mirrors, the reflective reticle, getting sufficient throughput…
TheUnhinged··on ASML EUV lithography machine could keep Moore’s Law on track
Now imagine all of this with a precision of a few nanometers…
TheUnhinged··on ASML EUV lithography machine could keep Moore’s Law on track
Intel is getting the first prototype(s), in a few years from now. Then add a a year or two before those EXE’s are actually used for volume manufacturing.

No exclusivity, as it’s ASML business model to work fairly with all semiconductor manufacturers.
