TheNorthman··on Mundane: Rust cryptography library that is difficult to misuse
Probably the Google-sponsored cryptography library you want to use depends on the language you're using... Not much point in using Tink if they don't expose a C-api or any other ergonomic form to make Rust bindings.
TheNorthman··on Nordic prison cells look like $3k apartments in San Francisco
In Denmark it would be illegal for an employer to discriminate against former inmates _if their crime is irrelevant for the job at hand_.

In practice, though... At least it's automatically erased after (IIRC) five years, depending on severity.

Yeah. If you smoke weed, you deserve what you get.

Isn't it more the second part of the statement that is shocking, that is "may identify additional material weaknesses in the future" rather than "we have identified a material weakness".

If so, that cuts the results down from 684 to 205, of which many are from the same company, just at different times.

> The persistence of disparities in HIV between heterosexual individuals and [homosexual individuals] in the United States cannot be explained solely by differences in risky sexual behavior between these two populations.

TheNorthman··on Co-Founder of OSI Banned from Mailing Lists
[1] is an absolute banger. He continues by saying that homosexual `promiscuity' is worse than the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA).

> It may turn out that the consequences of sympathizing with NAMBLA are almost equally ugly. If a climate of `enlightened’ tolerance for consensual pederasty and pedophilia tends to increase the rate at which boys are abused, that is a very serious consequence for which gay liberationists will not (and should not) soon be forgiven.

TheNorthman··on The Joys of Being a Stoic
I'm not intimately familiar with stoicism. If you could elaborate on what part you feel is a straw-man or even link to some of the `constructive responses' I'd appreciate it.
TheNorthman··on The Joys of Being a Stoic
Stoicism seems to get a lot of positive attention on Hacker News. While I support more philosophical content on HN, there usually isn't as much criticism of stoicism as any other topic. In the spirit of delegating to others who know more than me, here is an excerpt about stoicism from Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil:

> You desire to LIVE ‘according to Nature’? Oh, you noble Stoics, what fraud of words! Imagine to yourselves a being like Nature, boundlessly extravagant, boundlessly indifferent, without purpose or consideration, without pity or justice, at once fruitful and barren and uncertain: imagine to yourselves INDIFFERENCE as a power—how COULD you live in accordance with such indifference? To live—is not that just endeavouring to be otherwise than this Nature? Is not living valuing, preferring, being unjust, being limited, endeavouring to be different? And granted that your imperative, ‘living according to Nature,’ means actually the same as ‘living according to life’—how could you do DIFFERENTLY? Why should you make a principle out of what you yourselves are, and must be?

> In reality, however, it is quite otherwise with you: while you pretend to read with rapture the canon of your law in Nature, you want something quite the contrary, you extraordinary stage-players and self-deluders! In your pride you wish to dictate your morals and ideals to Nature, to Nature herself, and to incorporate them therein; you insist that it shall be Nature ‘according to the Stoa,’ and would like everything to be made after your own image, as a vast, eternal glorification and generalism of Stoicism! With all your love for truth, you have forced yourselves so long, so persistently, and with such hypnotic rigidity to see Nature FALSELY, that is to say, Stoically, that you are no longer able to see it otherwise— and to crown all, some unfathomable superciliousness gives you the Bedlamite hope that BECAUSE you are able to tyrannize over yourselves—Stoicism is selftyranny—Nature will also allow herself to be tyrannized over: is not the Stoic a PART of Nature? ...

> But this is an old and everlasting story: what happened in old times with the Stoics still happens today, as soon as ever a philosophy begins to believe in itself. It always creates the world in its own image; it cannot do otherwise; philosophy is this tyrannical impulse itself, the most spiritual Will to Power, the will to ‘creation of the world,’ the will to the causa prima.

Arch's Krita was updated to 4.4.0-4 at 2020-10-13 18:23 UTC, approximately 18 hours and 52 minutes ago.

While I can't see when the original blog post was submitted, I know this forum post was posted 2 hours ago. Are you sure you would benefit from updating even faster?

EDIT: In any case, you could use the AUR package that points directly to the git repo.

TheNorthman··on Norway officially accuses Russia for cyberattacks on parliament
Norway is a part of EFTA, EEA and the Schengen agreement, so they're bound pretty tightly with the EU.

I wouldn't, however, interpret any actions from Norway as having any form of EU support, unless it's explicitly mentioned.

TheNorthman··on “35-50% of clicks on Reddit Ads are fraudulent”
It really can't surprise you that a common viewpoint on HN is that `Information wants to be free'. This is both in a descriptive sense and a normative sense.

The descriptive sense obviously can't be selfish but the normative one can. So the question is then as follows: are the activists who further this narrative, out of a normative belief, selfish?

I personally don't think so. I believe that people like Aaron Swartz are among the most selfless people to ever exist.

TheNorthman··on Global capital is the tail that wags the U.S. economic dog
Your rejection of Pilger is baseless and your reduction of his works as dealing with `economic issues' is equally so. Your comments reminds me of Slavoj Zizek's phrase: ideological par excellence in that while you're free to think of Pilger as you want, even biased, you're not absolved of similar issues.

Putting the topic on its head, he is still widely respected in academia by amongst others, IIRC, Chomsky

TheNorthman··on Global capital is the tail that wags the U.S. economic dog
The video is 21 minutes long and you commented on it's contents 7 minutes after OP posted the link. I think it's also fair to assume some time went by between OP posting and you seeing their comment.

How did you find the time to view the clip thoroughly enough to dismiss it so nonchalantly?

TheNorthman··on Should you donate to the Wikimedia Foundation? (2015)
Sure. I'm not disputing them bringing up gender diversity, I'm simply stating that nobody but you were talking about requirements and keeping people out to meet certain `diversity requirements'. You were, simply put, attacking your own straw-man.
TheNorthman··on A device to restore vision to the blind is being prepared for clinical trials
That's strange. The site is using a `TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384` cipher suite, which is only supported in TLS 1.3. Are you sure the problem isn't on your end?
TheNorthman··on Should you donate to the Wikimedia Foundation? (2015)
> Is the non profit to gate people from editing if arbitrary diversity requirements aren't met?

Notice how you're the one suggesting `diversity requirements' and then proceed by going on a tirade about it. There are many things to be done about diversity and not all of them requires coercion.

TheNorthman··on Microsoft's underwater data centre resurfaces after two years
The formula for calculating this is: Q = c_p * d * V * (ΔT). Assuming an isobaric specific heat capacity of 4.18 J/(g K) and a density of 1.00 g/cm^3, heating a liter of water 1.00 K would take 4.18 kJ.

Giving OP's number for the volume of water in the ocean, heating the ocean 0.01 K would be 5.4 * 10^22 J. Assuming 365 days in a year, that's 1.7 * 10^15 W, an order of magnitude less than OPs figure for datacenter power-usage.

TheNorthman··on Wikipedia is an MMORPG
That's just what encyclopedias are though, the collective mentality of it's editors, their ideology, so to speak. You were never free to just consume encyclopedias, they were always meant to be understood in the context of their creation. What makes Wikipedia different from its competitors is the sheer diversity of editors contributing.

TheNorthman··on Winner of French Scrabble Title Does Not Speak French (2015)
Because Scrabble is turn based, any opportunities you create for yourself, you create for your opponent first. Making sure you don't make `valuable squares' available to your opponent is, arguably, more essential to winning than claiming them for yourself.
