Probably because the whole Topf & Söhne debacle doesn't need repeating? Engineers are of course partly responsible for the things they implement.

It's a tongue-in-cheek comment, not a serious statement regarding psychological resilience.

> I can tell you that bad programmers can write bad code in Rust.

Of course. The question rust users seem to put forth is that bad programmers write _better_ (not good) rust code than C code.

That bad programmers write bad code is to expected. That is, after all, a likely explanation for why they're bad.

There are public interest exceptions to European right-to-be-forgotten laws.

Cases are handled on an individual basis. Sometimes those exceptions apply, sometimes the needs of the individual supercedes those public interests.

> Suing every hole in the wall out of business is hardly in line with reasonable accommodation.

Suing is the enforcement mechanism chosen by the Israelis and the US, not the reasoning behind the requirement. The reasoning is: The disabled should have equal access to dining and it's not an undue burden to expect ramps outside of businesses. Most of the developed world is like this.

You might disagree with that reasoning but clearly a political majority in the US didn't and doesn't.

Is being vegan a disability?

Regarding nuts, I don't know about the rest of the world but in my country, restaurants are required to disclose allergens in their foods, if asked.

TheNorthman··on Thanks to the Israeli accessibility law, I have to delete my websites
I mean, aside from the obvious principle of reasonable accommodation guaranteed by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities?

Or, perhaps more specifically the guarantee from Article 19, barring segregation from the community at large?

Expecting the declarations on human rights to be followed is not unreasonable.

This could, of course, be an explanation. Except for the _stated fact_ that after they removed the batch import, they were still rejected.

No, you read right. The DDG browser for Mac is WebKit. Specifically it's using the WKWebView Class from the WebKit Framework[0]

TheNorthman··on Pentagon and CIA shaped thousands of Hollywood movies into effective propaganda
I don't understand the dichotomy between rational conversations and moral arguments. "Oh no, morality!" is such a ridiculous-but-common escape-hatch whenever you're having a debate about something that is even a tiny bit difficult.

Nothing is 100% objective-truth. Recognize this, and get over it.

TheNorthman··on Show HN: I made a modern web UI for Wikipedia
From the README [0] and code, I'd wager that the only thing happening is that JS has been filtered out, that the CSP rules are significantly stricter and that a dark mode has been added.

TheNorthman··on Special Report: Afghan pilots assassinated by Taliban as U.S. withdraws
What is your point? What makes the statement hollow is that the US does it all the time, just not that often in Afghanistan (that we know of).

Just as a fun fact because you didn't specify which bin Laden: Osama's son, Hamza bin Laden, was actually assassinated in Afghanistan by the US.

TheNorthman··on AWS acquires Wickr
Yes. In Denmark, Wickr is the chat-app of choice for dealers alongside Snapchat. My non-tor skilled friends use it for that. I don't think anyone uses it for anything else.

Why Wickr, I don't know. It's not to protect the buyers because the police does not care about them.

TheNorthman··on Union's evidence in Amazon vote 'could be grounds for overturning election'
Built into the very fabric of unionism is the acknowledgement that capital and labor have fundamentally different goals, i.e. class struggle. An acknowledgment for which the only logical conclusion is an independent workers movement.

There is a term for unions that don't acknowledge this divide and favor a "collaboration" between capital and labor: Yellow unions. It is not an endearing term and they are (rightfully) outlawed in the US.

TheNorthman··on Apple's Cooperation with Authoritarian Governments
Whether I made it too `pseudo-intellectual' I don't know, or perhaps rather, I must have because the point went over your head. My point was exactly the opposite, there are no desirable ends: either Apple should be allowed to assist law enforcement or they shouldn't, regardless of what ends this might bring.
TheNorthman··on Apple's Cooperation with Authoritarian Governments
Nice faux outrage. Perhaps he is saying that utilitarianism is a race to the bottom and that our actions shouldn't be based on an evaluation of an actions consequences but rather on the universality of it, such that we act only according to that maxim by which we can also will it to become universal law?

I, and I imagine many more people, block all external resources by default, which has gotten me removed from a mailing list I was interested in.

Although I will give you that the vast majority of auto-removals have been beneficial for me.

TheNorthman··on Comparison of Rust async and Linux thread context switch time and memory use
Not OP but: I found it surprisingly manageable. I think the disconnect for many people is they think they'll understand it simply by using it [0]. For me, investing a short time reading some of the design articles/documents really helped it click.

[0]: Which is fair, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the best way for some.

TheNorthman··on Who wants to live for ever? Ageing can be cured–and, in part, it soon will be
Yes, I also ignore the basic science behind neuroplasticity. There is no doubt that the developing brain has a higher plasticity than the fully adult brain.
TheNorthman··on Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend?
Schizoids are lonely and they choose (quite paradoxically) to be alone because of it. The internal fantasy of the schizoid exists solely to fill the hole left by their lack of emotionally intimate relationships.

That is, the steps of the schizoid personality is:

1. Loneliness

2. Escapism in the form of internal fantasy

3. Choosing to be alone, because the internal fantasy is judged to be enough

TheNorthman··on Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend?
How is it not schizoid? It's literally treating loneliness by directing attention toward one's inner life and away from the external world. I'm no Eugen Bleuler, but his definition is exactly this, the self in exile.

If you want to talk about specific criteria, from the ICD-10, I fear it in the long term would lead to:

1. Almost always choosing solitary activities.

2. An excessive preoccupation with fantasy and introspection.

3. Neither the desire nor existence of any close friends or confiding relationships (or only one).

TheNorthman··on Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend?
It's still on the spectrum. Loneliness shouldn't be treated by detachment and doing so can only lead to a lack of interest in social relationships, a solitary lifestyle and an exclusively internal fantasy world.

You can call it what you want but it's definitely Cluster A.
